Book Faculty Perceptions Regarding Institutional Inclusion and Effectiveness of Part time Academic and Technical Faculty at Gadsden State Community College

Download or read book Faculty Perceptions Regarding Institutional Inclusion and Effectiveness of Part time Academic and Technical Faculty at Gadsden State Community College written by Thomas George Buzan and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interaction with, accountability for, and inclusion of part-time instructors is a growing concern of higher education. The increase and development of virtual classrooms, online courses, and other transformative technologies have also impacted this particular phenomenon. As students become more focused on a customized education that fits their lives, it is evident that the traditional form of lecture in the classroom as the primary source of teaching will continue to evolve and change. This new normal of how education is delivered and taught in higher education institutions of today leads to the primary question of this study, which is who is and who will be teaching. According to the American Federation of Teachers, as cited in Charlier and Williams (2011), it is estimated that part-time instructors account for more than 68% of the professoriate teaching in the country's community colleges. Based on their perceived role and value incurred by their institutions, it is clear that this segment of faculty will continue to be significant contributors or detractors to the core mission of their institutions. The purpose of this study was to gain insight into the perceptions of part-time and full-time faculty members at Gadsden State Community College regarding the inclusion or exclusion of this growing population of educators. Utilizing an online survey instrument, the study will provide a framework of practices and strategies with the potential to bring about a higher level of involvement and job satisfaction for part-time faculty.

Book Scholarship Reconsidered

Download or read book Scholarship Reconsidered written by Ernest L. Boyer and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-10-06 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shifting faculty roles in a changing landscape Ernest L. Boyer's landmark book Scholarship Reconsidered: Priorities of the Professoriate challenged the publish-or-perish status quo that dominated the academic landscape for generations. His powerful and enduring argument for a new approach to faculty roles and rewards continues to play a significant part of the national conversation on scholarship in the academy. Though steeped in tradition, the role of faculty in the academic world has shifted significantly in recent decades. The rise of the non-tenure-track class of professors is well documented. If the historic rule of promotion and tenure is waning, what role can scholarship play in a fragmented, unbundled academy? Boyer offers a still much-needed approach. He calls for a broadened view of scholarship, audaciously refocusing its gaze from the tenure file and to a wider community. This expanded edition offers, in addition to the original text, a critical introduction that explores the impact of Boyer's views, a call to action for applying Boyer's message to the changing nature of faculty work, and a discussion guide to help readers start a new conversation about how Scholarship Reconsidered applies today.

Book Assessing Job Satisfaction Among Alabama s Community College Faculty

Download or read book Assessing Job Satisfaction Among Alabama s Community College Faculty written by Russell Warren Howton and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between selected demographic and educational variables of faculty members employed in the Alabama Community College System and their impact on job satisfaction. The variables included in the study are the demographic variables of age, gender, ethnicity, salary, and degree status, along with the institutional variables of academic ability of students, advancement in technology, faculty workload, tenure, co-worker relationship, administrative governance and support, and professional growth opportunities. This study was conducted to educate college administrators regarding faculty morale and to provide a means of communication between administrators and faculty to address faculty concerns, thus leading to a more stable learning environment for students. A survey research design was used to collect and analyze the data from faculty members at 10 community colleges within the state of Alabama. An instrument designed by the researcher entitled the Howton Community College Faculty Job Satisfaction Survey was used to collect the data using SurveyGizmo.com. The instrument was validated by a panel of experts and a pilot study determined the reliability coefficient to be .786. The data were analyzed through the use of descriptive statistics, factoral analysis, and analysis of variance (ANOVA). The findings of the study indicated a four scale structure for the created instrument which consisted of the following components: 1) administrative support and its affect on the personal life of faculty members; 2) obtaining tenure and the evaluation process; 3) technology in the classroom and training through professional development activities; and 4) relationship among colleagues. Results from ANOVA show that there were no between or within group differences among mean scores with regard to age, sex, ethnicity, salary, tenure status, or degree status. Examining measures of central tendencies revealed that over 20% of faculty members responded negatively with regard to satisfaction in the areas of academic ability of students, administrative support, professional development opportunities, and advancements in technology. However, 87% of faculty members responded favorably regarding their overall job satisfaction.

Book Leadership Practices of Academic Deans and Job Satisfaction of Faculty in Community Colleges

Download or read book Leadership Practices of Academic Deans and Job Satisfaction of Faculty in Community Colleges written by Andre E. Perez and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research study investigated the efficacy of academic dean leadership practices on faculty member job satisfaction in Louisiana community colleges. Leadership practices and job satisfaction were studied at multiple levels, and intrinsic and extrinsic variables were considered. The general design of this study was to interpret, develop, test, and present research that explained relationships, correlations, significances, and indicators about the leadership practices of deans and the effects of these practices on faculty job satisfaction. The goal of this research was to examine the relationship of variables that may lead to the future and enhanced development of academic dean leadership practices, how these practices may impact faculty job satisfaction, and how higher levels of job satisfaction may result in increased levels of positive job performance and lower faculty turnover at community colleges. The research indicated that there is a perception by faculty that dean leadership practices have a profound impact on faculty job satisfaction at community colleges-all the collected evidence from this research points to a strong and significant correlation between the variables. The findings of this study leave no doubt that the relationship between academic dean leadership practices and faculty job satisfaction is an integral one, and the results of this study may aid community college decision-makers while attempting to transform organizational culture and climate for the better.

Book Recognition of Status Reclaiming the Role of Community College Faculty in Academic Governance

Download or read book Recognition of Status Reclaiming the Role of Community College Faculty in Academic Governance written by Greg Lawrence Sethares and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many, the American community college is a vital, and often the only avenue to an education which can foster the skills and attributes needed by present and future citizens and leaders to make and remake the conditions of their daily existence. As such, it is critically important to understand the impact these institutions have on students and their ability to engender and support a more authentic democratic society. In the rapidly changing community college environment, examination of faculty voice in academic matters is of critical import. This study will show that curriculum control by faculty has eroded due to the imposed and hegemonic control of neoliberal education policies over the past four decades. While many may not recognize the oppressed subculture within higher education consisting not only of community college students but of community college educators, the system of community colleges in the United States has provided a canvas that has been reused and reshaped to serve the desires of the elite, as opposed to the desires and needs of current and future community college students to live, work, and exist in a democratic society. While all of higher education has been impacted, the extent to which community colleges have been isolated and singled out as centers of vocational education and training is unique within higher education. This study will investigate the interrelated aspects of the erosion of faculty voice, the vocationalization of curriculum, and the impact these factors have had on providing a community college education which assists students in creating and supporting a democratic society of praxis. To address current circumstances, I will claim the role of community college faculty in academic decision making as a matter of recognition of status, as well as a way to promote a more just and democratic society through educational processes based in an ecology of knowledges.

Book The Impact of COVID on Full Time Community College Faculty Job Satisfaction in Alabama

Download or read book The Impact of COVID on Full Time Community College Faculty Job Satisfaction in Alabama written by Matthew West and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explored the level of job satisfaction among a sample of Alabama community college faculty, particularly through the felt impact of COVID-related stressors, and when controlled by variables of faculty age, gender, race, subject discipline, and college locale. These research aims are important because while community college enrollments have increased, retaining qualified faculty continues to prove difficult amidst baby boomer retirements or faculty leaving the profession altogether. Like the Alabama teacher shortage in K-12 education, an abrupt decline has also occurred among two-year college faculty, making it vitally important to identify key sources of job satisfaction to maximize or job dissatisfaction to minimize. Using a quantitative approach, a Qualtrics survey incorporating the Wood's (1973) job satisfaction questionnaire was used to collect data on 216 full-time faculty representing seven colleges in the central region of Alabama.Respondents reported the highest level of satisfaction on the dimension the work itself with a mean score of 5.18 (SD = 0.90) and the lowest level on the dimension of policy and administration with a mean score of 3.68 (SD = 1.04). COVID work stressors, COVID-related student stressors, and COVID-motivated career change considerations significantly predicted global job satisfaction, explaining 36% of the variance. Analyses showed no direct association between differences in individual characteristics - gender, race, discipline, age, college locale - and job satisfaction. COVID, students, and administration emerged as important themes explaining job satisfaction and dissatisfaction. The evidence from this study suggests that despite the average faculty member reporting they were slightly satisfied with their job nearly three years after the pandemic's outbreak, COVID-related problems continue to be a concern for both students and faculty. The pandemic exacerbated many pre-existing issues in faculty work with regard to student unpreparedness and administrative oversight, leading to over a third of faculty in this sample considering a career change. In general, however, these results suggest that even in a time of educational budget shortfalls, cost-effective organizational changes can still be made to improve faculty morale overall, retain instructors for the long term, and improve the success of students in the Alabama community college.

Book Full time Faculty Use of Computer Technology in Enhancing Student Learning and Development in Alabama Community Colleges

Download or read book Full time Faculty Use of Computer Technology in Enhancing Student Learning and Development in Alabama Community Colleges written by Donna Howell Wood and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the opinions of full-time faculty members at Alabama community colleges concerning the use of computer technology in the classroom. An analysis of how faculty members address the issue of low-access students was also evaluated in relation to the impact a technology-enhanced curriculum may have on students' educational experiences. A comparison of faculty members' use of technology was reviewed with respect to gender, years of post-secondary teaching experience, educational level, and discipline. An invitation to participate in the research study was sent to ten Alabama community colleges based upon their Carnegie size classification and geographic location. Eight of the ten colleges agreed to participate and an online survey was sent to all full-time faculty members at those institutions. The questionnaire included items corresponding to Chickering and Ehrmann's (1996) reevaluation of the Seven Principles of Good Undergraduate Education using technology as a tool to enhance and improve student development and two factors concerning student access. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were also used to evaluate the nine categories. Descriptive statistics included a mean, standard deviation, and a frequency distribution for each of the primary research questions. Cronbach alpha tests were used to assess the reliability of each factor and inferential statistics were developed from general linear modeling repeated measures tests and used to evaluate the demographic and professional characteristics for each of the underlying categories.
