Book The Role of the Museum in the Education of Young Adults Motivation Emotion and Learning

Download or read book The Role of the Museum in the Education of Young Adults Motivation Emotion and Learning written by Stefano Mastrandrea and published by Roma TrE-Press. This book was released on 2016-11-01 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Perceived Constraints to Art Museums galleries Participation

Download or read book Perceived Constraints to Art Museums galleries Participation written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on constraints to leisure and recreation participation has focused on various types of activities in which people would like to participate, are currently participating, or have stopped participating. However, little attention has been made to identify constraints associated with art activities participation. The objectives of this study were to 1) identify factors which limit people's attendance to art museums/galleries; 2) address the issue of the internal heterogeneity between two constrained leisure behaviors; 3) reveal the role of previous participation, interest in future participation, gender and lifecycle in the perception of constraints to art activities; and 4) show the validity of segmentation criteria which are previous participation, interest in future participation, gender and lifecycle. Data from the Survey of Public Participation in the Arts (SPPA 1997) was used in this study. Total sample was divided into four categories by previous participation and interest in future participation. Further, the categories 'participants with interest' and 'non-participants with interest' were sub-divided based on gender and lifecycle. The results revealed that time, cost, access and availability were considered as the most significant constraints to art activity participation across all segments. However, the array and intensity of constraints differed depending on the types of constrained leisure. In addition, different types of constraints were experienced with different intensity by segments defined by previous participation, interest in future participation, gender and lifecycle. The analyses demonstrated that previous participation, interest in future participation, gender and lifecycle were important segmentation criteria in constructing homogeneous groups with respect to perceived leisure constraints.

Book Student Perceptions of Engagement and the Relationship to Student Perceptions of Teacher in the Visual Art Classroom

Download or read book Student Perceptions of Engagement and the Relationship to Student Perceptions of Teacher in the Visual Art Classroom written by Kirby Brooks Meng and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lack of student engagement in high schools is a concerning factor in education; low levels of engagement can lead to student apathy, academic challenges, disruptive behavior, and a higher dropout rate. The purpose of this research was to examine the relationship between high school students’ perceptions of engagement and students’ perceptions of the teacher in the visual art classroom. The researcher used social constructivism as a lens through which to explore this topic. The theory of constructivism focuses on active exploration and learning about ideas of personal significance, where the teacher plays an essential supportive and guiding role in student learning. The sample for this research was 68 high school students in a large metropolitan school district in Georgia who were enrolled in Comprehensive Art I. The researcher used a survey to collect students’ perceptions of their cognitive, emotional, and behavioral engagement in the art classroom as well as perceptions of their teacher. Data from this nonexperimental, cross-sectional, predictive study was analyzed using multiple linear regression where the dependent variable is teacher perception and the independent variables are cognitive, emotional, and behavioral engagement. Key findings include insight on the relationship of student levels of engagement to perceptions of the teacher in the art classroom.

Book Perceptions of Visual Art the Study of a Private College Year 7 Students and the Visual Art Classroom

Download or read book Perceptions of Visual Art the Study of a Private College Year 7 Students and the Visual Art Classroom written by Mallory Jane Green and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Visual Art has been a part of Australian education for decades; however, in an increasingly globalized visual world where individuals are inundated with media images the need for students to develop the skills to deconstruct and reconstruct images has become vital. And yet the notions thatVisual Art is simply a God-given gift, frill or busy-work activity remain prevalent within our society and the skills that are taught become optional for students at the end of their middle school years. Therefore, educators and researchers alike have the added responsibility to determinestudents' understanding of the benefits of Visual Art and identify ways in which to encourage continued appreciation and involvement in their Visual Art Education. The purpose of this thesis is to identify possible perceptions Year 7 students at a private college have on Visual Art, the influences that effect student subject selection and the ways their attitudescan inform future planning. The context of the study was an elite independent college in Victoria, Australia. This school currently allows students at the end of Year 7 to discontinue their Visual Artstudies in Year 8. This study approached Year 7 students with the intention of determining whether or not they enjoyed and valued Visual Art in addition to seeking insight into their attitudes surrounding their Visual Art classroom learning activities. The study furthermore sought insight into student attitudes concerning the role parents, self-efficacy, peers or dreams for the future played in their decision to continue or discontinue specific subjects. This paper also endeavoured to add to the mounting body of literature on student perceptions by investigating student's beliefs within a Visual Art classroom context. It similarly aimed to add tocurrent arts educational research through addressing the gaps that exist in Visual Art Educational studies, specifically the lack of student opinions. The study attempted this through collating data on Year 7 perceptions from three different instruments. Forty-one students volunteered to participate in an online questionnaire, during their timetabled art class, and provided their thoughts on their classroom experiences, subject selection influences anddreams for the future. Eleven students, who completed the surveys, then offered to attend one of four focus groups interviews that were conducted. These 30-minute interviews involved the interviewer asking semi-structured questions and prompting discussion with visual stimuli. Four students within the focus group interviews also illustrated how they saw themselves within their Visual Art classroom. Multiple instruments were created to encourage students to answer honestly and be able to offer in-depth insight into their opinions as well as allow the researcher to triangulate data and increase the validity of the information gathered. It became apparent within the questionnaire, focus group interviews and drawing instruments that students enjoyed Visual Art, looked forward to their Visual Art class learning experiences and it was a favourite among many. The key struggle students' highlighted during their classroomexperiences concerned time-management. However the data, while suggesting that students liked Visual Art, also noted that the majority of students had dated notions of the purpose of Visual Art subjects and illustrated that further discussions on the aims of Visual Art Education in accordanceto the new ACARA (2011) documents might be beneficial to implementing the national curriculum. The findings also clarified that Visual Art was not perceived as an important class and the minority of student participants saw a future in the creative industries. By identifying through the findings and literature framework the role that goals, self-efficacy and mindsets play within subject selection and motivation, as well as the significance of parent influence, the study was able to highlight thegrowing need for parental involvement in promoting Visual Art Education, developing a growth mindset and student self-efficacy. The study also implicated the necessity for teachers to promote career pathways in our global and creative economy that are benefited by Visual Art studies. As awhole the study provides insight into potential actions Visual Art teachers at a Private College might explore to improve motivation in the Visual Art classroom and encourage students to elect to continue their studies in Visual Art in the future.

Book Student Learning in an Art Museum a Study of Docent led Tours and Changes in Docent Training to Improve Visitors Experiences

Download or read book Student Learning in an Art Museum a Study of Docent led Tours and Changes in Docent Training to Improve Visitors Experiences written by Barbara Zollinger Sweeney and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: This is a case study focusing on student learning on docent-led tours in art museums. It is a participant case study in that I am Educator for Docent and Public Programs at the Columbus Museum of Art. The primary goal of this study is to describe and measure student learning on a docent-led, thematic tour that in part ustilizes an interactive exhibition, Eye Spy: Adventures in Art. Eye Spy contextualizes authentic works of art. This study also focuses on the use of evaluation tools for measuring student learning, including semantic maps and webs, and one-on-one interviews. The use of arious forms of maps and webs as evaluation tool has only recently been introduced into museum settings. The study also recounts and provides examples of changes in docent raining and training materials developed as the study progressed. Art museums are often perceived as elitist institutions founded by 'robber barons' and serving an audience of wealthy patrons. This study reconts a different reality where most art museums are mid-size or small. These intitutions are founded by middle class or upper middle class citizens, and serve large numbers of school children throuth studio programs, cams, outreach and docent-led tours. A background history of American art museums and their education function as well as background on the foundations of the Columbus Museum of Art are contextualize this study. Docent led tours are primary educational functions of museums. This study is intended to stimulate more research concerning this important subject.

Book If They re Going to Tell Me what to See What s the Point

Download or read book If They re Going to Tell Me what to See What s the Point written by Heather Dexter Havenga Chelmecki and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My research considers the art museum as an environment for provoking adolescent students to participate in the production of meaning. The urban teen audience is often unaddressed by the art museum, an institution that prides itself on preserving and displaying famous and historical works of art. My participatory action research project explores pedagogical conditions, in both the museum and the classroom, which invite the teen audience to engage in critical and personal art interpretation. Three questions are central to my research: (1) What occurs when a group of urban high school students experience a collaboratively developed language arts based art interpretation curriculum? (2) What kinds of interpretive tools personally engage high school students in the museum setting? (3) What pedagogical classroom conditions invite teens to critically interpret art? I conducted my research with one high school teacher and his class of fifteen high school juniors in an urban, inner-city location. I designed a museum art interpretation curriculum that was integrated on a weekly basis in the students' language and composition class. Teen participants were invited to experience art in the museum setting through docent-led tours and open-ended student exploration. In the classroom, students engaged in the process of art interpretation, looked at the kinds of interpretive tools museums employ, composed writing, and produced culminating podcasts that narrate their encounters with works of art from the Art Institute of Chicago's collection. These podcasts were presented at the museum to an audience of peers, parents, and educators. The students' narratives of museum art interpretation are an important source of data for my research. I use this data to analyze instances when the teen's narratives suggest their engagements with and resistance to critical thinking. I pay close attention to 5 learning moments that provide evidence of students' shifting perceptions about art and art museums. I also concentrate on instances during my attempt to integrate art into a language arts curriculum that strengthen and inhibit teen art interpretation. My thesis concludes with recommendations for museum and classroom educators who share my goal of engaging a teen audience in art interpretation activities that connect with and support other content areas within a high school curriculum.
