Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine the perceptions and concerns of elementary teachers and principals toward the implementation of a school-wide positive behavior support (SWPBS) innovation. In addition, the study explored the factors that elementary teachers and principals perceived positively or negatively influenced the implementation and sustainability of SWPBS. The study was conducted in three elementary schools in two school districts in southeastern Pennsylvania. A total of sixty-three elementary teachers and three principals participated in the study by completing two online survey instruments. The researcher also interviewed some of the participants to gain additional knowledge about the implementation of SWPBS. The results of the study indicated that many of the elementary teachers reported having concerns related to the implementation of SWPBS and how it affects them personally and professionally. The specific concerns varied depending upon the participant's knowledge, use, and experience with implementing SWPBS; however, the data revealed that both teachers and principals are concerned with the management of SWPBS in terms of time, effort, and data collection responsibilities. Furthermore, the results suggested that the perceptions and concerns of elementary teachers and principals toward SWPBS can have a significant impact on the implementation and sustainability of this innovation.

Book excerpt: Administrators and educators face increasing challenges to prepare students for standardized test while simultaneously supporting each child's behavioral, social, emotional and physical growth and wellbeing. The philosophy and teaching practices of The Responsive Classroom Approach offers educators tools to bring balance to the whole child. The current investigation examines the implementation efforts of seven educators in a small rural school district. This school district has a building-wide (Positive Behavior Intervention Support) system in place, while a small group of educators are using the Responsive Classroom Approach. The current investigation utilizes a mixed-methods approach. A short self-assessment reflection was used as a warm-up activity, and Q methodology provided the basis to gain quantitative and qualitative results. Results indicate that all response variance loaded on one perspective, explaining more than 70% of the variance in the Q-sort. The current study revealed an increase in educator job satisfaction related to Responsive Classroom implementation. Participants also revealed that collegial collaboration was one of the strongest factors related to successful Responsive Classroom implementation.

A web-based survey of teachers at eight elementary schools implementing School-wide positive behavior support according to national criteria was administered to assess teacher response to School-wide PBS. Data from the North Carolina Education Data Center was used to assess student outcomes related to academic performance, school suspensions, and teacher turn-over rates in the eight study schools compared with 264 NC elementary schools that had started School-wide PBS. Part 1 presents the results of the web-based survey administered to all teachers in the eight elementary schools implementing School-wide PBS according to national criteria for implementation. The web-based survey sought to answer the following questions: (1) What school-wide behavioral support systems are in place in study schools? (2) How satisfied are teachers with the support systems in place in their schools? and (3) How has School-wide PBS affected teacher perception of school climate and student behavior? Part 2 presents the results of analyses of data from the North Carolina Education Research Data Center to answer the following questions about School-wide PBS: (1) What is the effect of School-wide PBS on academic performance, grade promotion, and short term suspension rates in study schools compared to all NC elementary schools that have ever implemented School-wide PBS? and (2) What is the effect of School-wide PBS on teacher turn-over rates in study schools compared to all NC elementary schools that have ever implemented School-wide PBS? Book excerpt: Many schools have used school wide behavior management programs such as Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) effectively as a behavior management system to improve student classroom behavior issues. The purpose of this qualitative interpretive study was to explore how PBIS influence high school teachers0́9 perceptions on school climate within a participant school located in Southern Arizona. Through naturalistic inquiry using face-to-face semi structured interviews, seven teachers who have taught on the participant high school campus for four to six years were able to share their personal perceptions regarding PBIS and its influence on their school climate. The data collected for this study included a PBIS teacher questionnaire, semi-structured interviews, and three years of longitudinal student referral data to examine teacher perceptions of school climates and if the school wide behavior programs they implement has had any influence. This study identified possible limitations and advantages of PBIS on student behavior and determined whether perception from the study teachers differed from the general teaching staff regarding the influence PBIS has on school climate perceptions. The findings and conclusions of the study demonstrate that a relationship does indeed exist between having a successful behavior managements system in place such as PBIS and teachers0́9 feelings about their school climate. Themes were developed and identified that may help administrators understand the relationships that may exist.

Book excerpt: School-wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (SWPBIS) has proven an effective system approach in reducing student disciplinary referrals, enhancing school climate, increasing student social competence and ultimately improving student academic outcomes. An initiative such as SWPBIS requires reflective attention by effective school leadership. The purpose of this study was to examine the extent to which school administrator support affects SWPBIS sustainability from perceptions of both school administrators and non-administrative pedagogical staff in the New York City public schools. A mixed methods approach was used to examine the critical features in relation to the sustainable implementation of SWPBIS. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected through the School-Wide Universal Behavior Sustainability Index: School Teams (SUBSIST) via Survey Monkey taken by school PBIS core team members. The findings indicate that the perceived presence of administrative support by school leadership was evident at schools that implement SWPBIS, and building leadership was perceived to be one of the most importance factors associated with SWPBIS sustainability. There was a significant difference in perceptions between administrators and non-administrative staff v on sustainability factors. Qualitative data indicated the majority of respondents perceived staff buy-in and administrator support more important in the initial implementation than sustainability, while implementation fidelity, resources, teaming and data were more critical in the sustainability of SWPBIS. In addition, the results indicate that the years of implementation play a relevant role in the sustainability of SWPBIS as school personnel with over four years of implementation had significantly higher mean scores than school personnel with 1-4 years of implementation for most of the sustainability factors.
