Book excerpt: In 1980, a group of scientists from national laboratories, universities, and other research organizations gathered informally in a series of meetings to consider the state of research on risks to health, safety, and the environment. Each scientist had conducted research on the subject. All felt that the traditional disciplines and professional societies to which they belonged were neither ade quate nor appropriate for addressing the extraordinarily complex problems of assessing the risks inherent in modern society. The con sensus of the group was that a new society was needed to address these problems in a scientific and objective way. From these initial meetings, the Society for Risk Analysis was formed The major aims of the Society for Risk Analysis, as stated in its constitution, are • to promote knowledge and understanding of risk analysis techniques and their applications; • to promote communication and interaction among those engaged in risk analysis; and • to disseminate risk analysis information and promote the advancement of all aspects of risk analysis. Members of the Society are drawn from a variety of disciplines, including the health sciences, engineering, the physical sciences, the humanities, and the behavioral and social sciences. An import ant function of the Society is the annual meeting, at which var ious aspects of risk analysis are discussed. Book excerpt: The process of choosing one's career such as whether to become an entrepreneur or otherwise, has been subject to a lot of research, especially in the area of decision making. The Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) (Ajzen, 1991) has perhaps been the single most referred approach in understanding such decisions. However, there have been numerous cases where this does not hold good such as for the people who do not consciously intend to become an entrepreneur but find themselves becoming an 'accidental entrepreneur' (Fitzsimmons and Douglas, 2010). The current paper attempts to incorporate the idea of risk perception of a person as an explanation of such choices. The study introduced the DOSPERT scale (Weber et al., 2002) to a set of first generation entrepreneurs (test group) and service holder (control group), to understand if there is any significant difference between the two groups, based on which some out of sample cases can be identified. The results of the study confirm significant difference through logistic regression modeling and was able to identify 66% cases correctly based on only six generic risk perception variables and a few other demographic variables. Thus, it is established that generic risk perception may be added to the TPB model to significantly improve the model in accurately identifying entrepreneurial career choices.

Chapter Four establishes a relationship between the consumption of drugs like cannabis, cocaine and designer drugs in young university and non-university populations with the young people's perception of risks associated with such consumption. Chapter Five provides an analysis of consumers' choice of pay television and car insurance services based on the perceived risk model.

Sometimes their perception of their own risks, even of survival to adulthood, is larger than the reality; in other cases, they underestimate the risks of particular actions or behaviors. It is possible, indeed likely, that some adolescents engage in risky behaviors because of a perception of invulnerabilityâ€"the current conventional wisdom of adults' views of adolescent behavior. Others, however, take risks because they feel vulnerable to a point approaching hopelessness. In either case, these perceptions can prompt adolescents to make poor decisions that can put them at risk and leave them vulnerable to physical or psychological harm that may have a negative impact on their long-term health and viability. A small planning group was formed to develop a workshop on reconceptualizing adolescent risk and vulnerability. With funding from Carnegie Corporation of New York, the Workshop on Adolescent Risk and Vulnerability: Setting Priorities took place on March 13, 2001, in Washington, DC. The workshop's goal was to put into perspective the total burden of vulnerability that adolescents face, taking advantage of the growing societal concern for adolescents, the need to set priorities for meeting adolescents' needs, and the opportunity to apply decision-making perspectives to this critical area. This report summarizes the workshop.

Book excerpt: This study examined the process, correlates, and outcomes of compromise in career-related decisions, as a test of Gottfredson's (2002) theory of circumscription and compromise. Sex-type, prestige, and work activities are important dimensions along which individuals consider occupational alternatives. However, because these dimensions naturally covary across occupations, it is difficult to make unequivocal statements about the relative importance of these dimensions. 194 college seniors (127 females, 44 males, 26 non-responses) took part in an experimentally manipulated occupational choice task. They also provided additional information about their grades, self-efficacy perceptions, personality and vocational interests, as well as their parents' education levels and occupations. Results from this study indicated that (for this predominantly female sample) preferred occupations tended to be more prestigious, and more feminine in sex-type than less preferred occupations. In addition, when individuals were forced to choose among unacceptable occupations, females tended to choose more feminine (less masculine) occupations over other occupations. Males also tended to choose the more feminine occupation, although markedly less so than females. When forced to choose among preferred alternatives, both males and females tended to choose options more consistent with their interests over those options less consistent with their interests. Individual differences on ability, socio-economic status, and self-efficacy were also found to positively predict which occupations participants found acceptable. However, personality differences did not (in general) predict differences in participants' occupational choices. Lastly, in a follow-up, post-graduation interview (n = 44), individuals who experienced discrepancies between their intended and actual post-graduation positions reported less satisfaction with these positions than individuals who did not experience discrepancies. Limitations and implications of this work are discussed.

Book excerpt: "This paper presents new evidence on the distribution of risk attitudes in the population, using a novel set of survey questions and a representative sample of roughly 22,000 individuals living in Germany. Using a question that asks about willingness to take risks on an 11-point scale, we find evidence of heterogeneity across individuals, and show that willingness to take risks is negatively related to age and being female, and positively related to parental education and height. We test the behavioral relevance of this survey measure by conducting a complementary field experiment, based on a representative sample of 450 subjects, and find that the measure is a good predictor of actual risk-taking behavior. We use a more standard lottery question to measure risk preference, and find similar results regarding heterogeneity and determinants of risk preferences. We also estimate the coefficient of relative risk aversion for each individual in the sample based on lottery responses. Using five questions about willingness to take risks in specific domains -- car driving, financial matters, sports and leisure, career, and health -- the paper studies the impact of context on risk attitudes, finding a strong but imperfect correlation across contexts. Using data on a collection of risky behaviors from different contexts, including traffic offenses, portfolio choice, smoking, occupational choice, participation in sports, and migration, the paper compares the predictive power of all of the risk measures. Strikingly, the general risk question predicts all behaviors whereas the standard lottery measure does not. The best overall predictor for any specific behavior is typically the corresponding context-specific measure. These findings call into the question the current preoccupation with lottery measures of risk preference, and point to variation in risk perceptions as an understudied determinant of risky behavior"--Forschungsinstitut zur Zukunft der Arbeit web site.
