Book excerpt: Individuals sometimes fail to participate in outdoor activities--to the detriment of their health--as a result of leisure constraints. Constraints are pressures individuals feel when attempting to participate in different activities that limit their full participation. Research suggests all individuals perceive constraints in some form whether they participate or not. The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a relationship between leisure constraints and frequency of participation among individuals and more specifically among different socio-demographic groups in Greenville, North Carolina. Additionally, this study explored which constraint negotiation and agency facilitation strategies have the potential to increase participation frequency in outdoor recreation activities according to respondents' socio-demographic characteristics in Greenville, NC. This thesis accomplishes the aforementioned work by conducting a quantitative survey administered via U.S. mail, door-to-door intercepts and face-to-face intercepts. The survey results suggest that despite a high frequency of participation and lower levels of constraints, agency facilitation and negotiation strategies exist that could be used to increase outdoor activity involvement.

Book excerpt: Overview: While pre-adolescent girls are equal to their male counterparts with regard to participation in outdoor leisure activities, participation in the outdoor environment declines when they reach their teens. Literature points to gender differences in outdoor leisure attributed to fear, stereotypes and lack of knowledge (Kilgour & Parker, 2013; Mehra, 2001; Pike & Beames, 2013; Pohl, Borrie & Patterson, 2000). The following research project examined the constraints and negotiation strategies of female adolescents participating in the Youth Conservation Program in Grand Teton National Park. Purpose: The purpose of this research was to examine factors that may impact young women in participating in outdoor activities through gaining perspective of the constraints and negotiation strategies of female adolescents before, during and after the Youth Conservation Program. Method: This was an exploratory research study using a survey to gain demographic information and personal interviews of eight previous participants of an outdoor work program. Results: Results indicate that females faced a myriad of constraints of all types including structural, interpersonal and intrapersonal throughout this program. Female adolescents reported comradery, positive self talk, and female role models as predominant ways these constraints were negotiated. Implications: The findings of this research assisted in gaining a fuller understanding of ways to engage more females in outdoor work in attempt to build a broader basis for females in this arena. Social workers must work on both micro and macro levels to continue to cultivate positive female role models and make adjustments to create broader policies to enhance female participation in the future.

P4P programs have become widespread in health care in just the past decade and have generated a great deal of enthusiasm in health policy circles and among legislators, despite limited evidence of their effectiveness. On a positive note, this movement has developed and tested many new types of health care payment systems and has stimulated much new thinking about how to improve quality of care and reduce the costs of health care. The current interest in P4P echoes earlier enthusiasms in health policy—such as those for capitation and managed care in the 1990s—that failed to live up to their early promise. The fate of P4P is not yet certain, but we can learn a number of lessons from experiences with P4P to date, and ways to improve the designs of P4P programs are becoming apparent. We anticipate that a “second generation” of P4P programs can now be developed that can have greater impact and be better integrated with other interventions to improve the quality of care and reduce costs.
