Book Perceived Outdoor Activity Constraints and Negotiation Strategies in Greenville NC

Download or read book Perceived Outdoor Activity Constraints and Negotiation Strategies in Greenville NC written by Andrew Frost and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Individuals sometimes fail to participate in outdoor activities--to the detriment of their health--as a result of leisure constraints. Constraints are pressures individuals feel when attempting to participate in different activities that limit their full participation. Research suggests all individuals perceive constraints in some form whether they participate or not. The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a relationship between leisure constraints and frequency of participation among individuals and more specifically among different socio-demographic groups in Greenville, North Carolina. Additionally, this study explored which constraint negotiation and agency facilitation strategies have the potential to increase participation frequency in outdoor recreation activities according to respondents' socio-demographic characteristics in Greenville, NC. This thesis accomplishes the aforementioned work by conducting a quantitative survey administered via U.S. mail, door-to-door intercepts and face-to-face intercepts. The survey results suggest that despite a high frequency of participation and lower levels of constraints, agency facilitation and negotiation strategies exist that could be used to increase outdoor activity involvement.

Book Perceived Benefits Constraints and Negotiation Strategies of Skiers and Snowboarders with Disabilities

Download or read book Perceived Benefits Constraints and Negotiation Strategies of Skiers and Snowboarders with Disabilities written by Lauren Bright and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to examine the benefits to recreation participation, the reasons that constrain people with disabilities from participating in outdoor recreation activities (i.e., skiing and snowboarding), and the strategies they employ to allow desired participation levels. The hierarchical model of constraints proposed by Crawford and Godbey was used as the theoretical framework for this study. Adaptive recreation participants' opinions and beliefs were obtained through a mail-back survey. Findings of the study suggest that the benefits of recreation and leisure that effect one's self concept were most important to these adaptive skiers and snowboarders. In addition, the study revealed that people with disabilities experienced similar constraints to recreation participation to those people without disabilities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Serious Leisure offers a comprehensive view and analysis of the current state of the sociology of leisure. Defining and differentiating the way people use their free time, Stebbins divides such activity into categories of serious, casual, and project-based leisure that he further separates into a variety of types and subtypes. Together they comprise what he calls "serious leisure." In this perspective, serious leisure constitutes systematic pursuit of an amateur, hobbyist, or volunteer activity sufficiently substantial and interesting in nature and requiring special skills, knowledge, and experience. Casual leisure, though immediately, intrinsically rewarding, is by contrast a relatively short-lived pleasurable activity, requiring little or no special training to enjoy it. Project-based leisure is a short-term, reasonably complicated, occasional creative undertaking carried out in free time. Stebbins sets out the basic concepts and propositions that make up the three forms, focusing on their essential elements. He takes stock of the serious leisure literature as well as that for casual and project-based leisure. Stebbins sees "serious leisure" realized by way of a set of foundational concepts--organization, community, history, lifestyle, and culture--and several of their component areas. He reviews the history and background of the concept of serious leisure and then adds historical commentary on, first, casual leisure and, then, project-based leisure. Finally, he examines the future and the importance of the serious leisure perspective in a globalizing world, and some of its critical links with other fields of knowledge and practice, notably the nonprofit sector and preventive medicine. Together with its original insights, Serious Leisure offers a single, handy, coherent, comprehensive resource. It will be of interest to sociologists, labor studies specialists, and economists.

Book Motivations Barriers and Constraints Affecting Underprivileged Youths Participation in Nature based Outdoor Recreation

Download or read book Motivations Barriers and Constraints Affecting Underprivileged Youths Participation in Nature based Outdoor Recreation written by Jessica K. Schiff and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The types of motivations, barriers, and constraints affecting youth participation in nature-based outdoor recreation are researched in this study. The participants represent underprivileged youth affiliated with a drop-in after-school youth program sponsored by a local soup kitchen in an upper-Midwest city. Guided by the Constraints Negotiation Theory and following previous leisure and recreation research on perceived motivations, barrier, and constraints, this study utilizes qualitative techniques to collect data. Results reveal sets of common motivations and constraints affecting underprivileged youths' participation in nature-based outdoor recreation. This information will benefit public and private local and regional organizations that provide and promote nature-based outdoor recreation opportunities for a diverse youth population by helping them to better understand their audience.
