Book PEP II Status and Outlook

Download or read book PEP II Status and Outlook written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PEP-II/BABAR are presently in their second physics run. With machine and detector performance and reliability at an all-time high, almost 51 fb−1 have been integrated by BABAR up to mid-October 2001. PEP-II luminosity has reached 4.4 x 1033 cm−2 s−1 and our highest monthly delivered luminosity has been above 6 pb−1, exceeding the performance parameters given in the PEP-II CDR by almost 50%. The increase compared to the first run in 2000 has been achieved by a combination of beam-current increase and beam-size decrease. In this paper we will summarize the PEP-II performance and the present limitations as well as our plans to further increase machine performance.

Book PEP II Status Report

Book excerpt: The main design features of the PEP-II asymmetric two-ring electron-positron B Factory collider, built at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, are described. This facility will complete construction in June 1998. The high energy ring, completed in May 1997, has had 3 months of commissioning and successfully stored 0.75 A of electrons. The success of the high energy ring testing validates not only its ring components, but also the injection system, the RF system and the control system all of which are common to the two rings.

Book excerpt: The PEP-II project, a joint proposal of SLAC, LBL, and LLNL, will involve an upgrade of the PEP storage ring at SLAC to serve as an asymmetric B factory. The upgrade will involve replacing the vacuum and rf systems of PEP, which will serve as the high-energy ring (containing 9 GeV electrons), along with the addition of a new low-energy ring (containing 3.1 GeV positrons) mounted atop the high-energy ring. The present design status of the project and a summary of recent R & D results are presented here. If approved, the PEP-II project is ready to begin construction in October 1993.

Book PEP II Status

Book excerpt: PEP-II and BaBar have just finished run 7, the last run of the SLAC B-factory. PEP-II was one of the few high-current e+e- colliding accelerators and holds the present world record for stored electrons and stored positrons. It has stored 2.07 A of electrons, nearly 3 times the design current of 0.75 A and it has stored 3.21 A of positrons, 1.5 times more than the design current of 2.14 A. High-current beams require careful design of several systems. The feedback systems that control instabilities, the RF system stability loops, and especially the vacuum systems have to handle the higher power demands. We present here some of the accomplishments of the PEP-II accelerator and some of the problems we encountered while running high-current beams.

Book PEP II Status and Future Plans

Download or read book PEP II Status and Future Plans written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The PEP-II B-Factory at SLAC has reached a luminosity of 4.6 x 1033/cm2/s and has delivered 94 fb−1 of data to the BaBar physics detector by the end of May 2002. PEP-II has delivered over 309 pb−1 in 24 hours and over 6.35 fb−1 in one month. The accelerator physics issues for these performance levels include electron cloud, beam-beam effects, parasitic beam-beam collisions, and RF beam loading. Upgrades to PEP-II are underway to increase the luminosity to 2 to 4 x 1034/cm2/s by FY2007. The accelerator physics effects that must be dealt with during these upgrades include RF loading, multi-bunch feedback, IR beta function, bunch length reduction, and interaction region vacuum chamber upgrades.

Book CP Violation From Quarks to Leptons

Download or read book CP Violation From Quarks to Leptons written by M. Giorgi and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2006-07-25 with total page 613 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a long time after the discovery in 1964, by Christenson, Cronin, Fitch and Turlay, that the long-lived neutral kaon decays both into three and into two pions, which has since been taken as proof of CP violation, successive new and more precise experiments confirmed the original evidence and provided results compatible with a phenomenological description confining the CP violation to the mixing between neutral kaons and antikaons. However the Standard Model, with three generations of quarks, linking as it does CP violation to the presence of a single non trivial phase in the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark mixing matrix, implies that if CP violation exists at all, then it is a general property of weak interactions, appearing in transitions were amplitudes involving all three quark families interfere with each other, producing effects with a magnitude related to that of the CKM coefficients. This fact has stimulated an impressive amount of theoretical work leading in many cases to precise predictions. This publication reviews the field, from both the theoretical and experimental point of view, while planning for the forthcoming experimentation at LHC and considering possible new facilities for kaon, B meson and neutrino physics. Book Status Report on PEP II Performance

Download or read book Status Report on PEP II Performance written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PEP-II [1-9] is an ee− collider with asymmetric energies (3.1 and 9 GeV, respectively) in a 2200 m tunnel at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The collider produces B mesons to study a particle physics effect called CP violation as well as other physics topics. PEP-II was completed in 1998 with the first luminosity generated in July of that year. The installation of the BaBar Detector was finished in May 1999. The overall layout of PEP-II is shown in Figure 1 and the interaction region of PEP-II in Figure 2. The accelerator parameters and achievements of the High Energy Ring (HER) are listed in Table 1 and those for the Low Energy Ring (LER) in Table 2. The two beams collide at a single point in the IR2 hall where the BaBar detector is located. Beam parameters at the best luminosity are shown in Table 3 and PEP-II milestones in Table 4. In August 1999 PEP-II passed the world's record for luminosity which was 8.1 x 1032/cm2/s. The present luminosity in PEP-II is 2.15 x 1033/cm2/s which is 72% of the design. In June 2000 PEP-II delivered an integrated luminosity of 150 pb−1 in one day, which is above the design integrated luminosity per day of 135 pb−1. Over the past year PEP-II has delivered over 12 fb−1 to BaBar. BaBar has logged over 11 pb−1. The present plan is collide until the end of October 2000 followed by a three month installation period.

Book Status of the PEP II Asymmetric B Factory

Download or read book Status of the PEP II Asymmetric B Factory written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The PEP-II project is an ee− storage ring complex with unequal energy beams to study CP violation in the B meson system. High luminosity requires a large number of bunches and a low value of beta at the collision point. The high beam current requires advances in vacuum chambers, damped RF cavities, and feedback systems. Machine elements inside the detector are required to achieve low beta values and magnetic separation.

Book Status of the PEP II B factory High Energy Ring

Download or read book Status of the PEP II B factory High Energy Ring written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 9 GeV High Energy Ring (HER) of the PEP-II B Factory is an electron storage ring under construction at SLAC. Significant progress has been made in the last year on all systems. As of mid 1996, all 192 dipoles have been installed, with installation of the quadrupoles underway. The vacuum system, for design currents up to 3 A average, is in production using a recently commissioned e-beam welder. Beam instrumentation systems are being fabricated. The interaction region will bring the HER beam into collision with the 3 GeV beam of the Low Energy Ring; design of this section of the HER is in an advanced stage. 8 refs., 3 figs., 1 tab.
