Book An Appetite For Wonder The Making of a Scientist

Download or read book An Appetite For Wonder The Making of a Scientist written by Richard Dawkins and published by Random House. This book was released on 2013-09-12 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born to parents who were enthusiastic naturalists, and linked through his wider family to a clutch of accomplished scientists, Richard Dawkins was bound to have biology in his genes. But what were the influences that shaped his life? And who inspired him to become the pioneering scientist and public thinker now famous (and infamous to some) around the world? In An Appetite for Wonder we join him on a personal journey from an enchanting childhood in colonial Africa, through the eccentricities of boarding school in England, to his studies at the University of Oxford’s dynamic Zoology Department, which sparked his radical new vision of Darwinism, The Selfish Gene. Through Dawkins’s honest self-reflection, touching reminiscences and witty anecdotes, we are finally able to understand the private influences that shaped the public man who, more than anyone else in his generation, explained our own origins.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sherley: Book of Poems, Choice and Rare Miss Pegram, who was born and reared on a little farm, Fairy Haven, which is her present home, near the village of Elkin, in Surry County, North Carolina. Her father and mother died when she was quite young, leaving two little sisters in her care, and while she had another sister and four brothers, they were away from home and thus all the responsibilities of the home and her younger sisters devolved upon her, and her life has been one of self-sacrifice and perfect devotion to those who are near and dear to her, and the sick and the poor ever find a true friend and helper in her. Having thus spent her life in the country, and deprived of a liberal education, yet she is just such a woman as God intended that woman should be - true, noble and good - always doing her duty and knowing but little of the luxuries and some times needing the very necessities of life, yet she has ever been hopeful that through the cloud God's sun would sometime cast its warmest rays upon her and those she loves, and believing that it is through His mercies that she has been permitted to write these poems as a means of support for herself and sisters, she sends them forth with the wish that they may be a source of enjoyment and real good to many others. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Parnassus Chaucer fulfils the part of the poet, possesses the advantage of being the most cultivated man of his time, and so speaks always sovereignly and cheerfully. Often the poetic nature, being too susceptible, is over-acted on by others. The religious sentiment teaching the immensity of every moment, the indifference of mag nitude, the present is all, the soul is God this lesson is great and greatest. Yet this, also, has limits for humanity. One must not seek to dwell in ethereal contemplation: so should the man decline into a monk, and stop short of his possible enlarge ment. The intellect is cheerful. Chaucer's antiquity ought not to take him out of the hands of intelligent readers. No lover of poetry can spare him, or should grudge the short study required to command the archaisms of his English, and the skill to read the melody of his verse. His matter is excellent, his story told with vivacity, and with equal skill in the pathos and m triumph. I think he has lines of more force than any English writer, except Shakspeare. If delivered by an experienced reader, the verses will be found musical as well as wise, and fertile in invention. He is always strong, facile, and pertinent, and with what vivacity of style through all the range of his pictures, comic or tragic! He knows the language of joy and of despair. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lyra Heroica: A Book of Verse for Boys This book of verse for boys is, I believe, the first of its kind in English. Plainly it were labour lost to go gleaning where so many experts have gone harvesting; and for what is rarest and best in English Poetry the world must turn, as heretofore, to the several 'Golden Treasuries' of Professor Palgrave and Mr. Coventry Patmore, and to the excellent 'Poets' Walk' of Mr. Mowbray Morris. My purpose has been to choose and sheave a certain number of those achievements in verse which, as expressing the simpler sentiments and the more elemental emotions, might fitly be addressed to such boys - and men, for that matter - as are privileged to use our noble English tongue. To set forth, as only art can, the beauty and the joy of living, the beauty and the blessedness of death, the glory of battle and adventure, the nobility of devotion - to a cause, an ideal, a passion even - the dignity of resistance, the sacred quality of patriotism, that is my ambition here Now, to read poetry at all is to have an ideal anthology of ones own, and in that possession to be incapable of content with the anthologies of all the world besides. That is, the personal equation is ever to be reckoned withal, and I have had my preferences, as those that went before me had theirs. Book Punks in Peoria

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jonathan Wright
  • Publisher : University of Illinois Press
  • Release : 2021-06-15
  • ISBN : 0252052706
  • Pages : 339 pages

Download or read book Punks in Peoria written by Jonathan Wright and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2021-06-15 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Punk rock culture in a preeminently average town Synonymous with American mediocrity, Peoria was fertile ground for the boredom- and anger-fueled fury of punk rock. Jonathan Wright and Dawson Barrett explore the do-it-yourself scene built by Peoria punks, performers, and scenesters in the 1980s and 1990s. From fanzines to indie record shops to renting the VFW hall for an all-ages show, Peoria's punk culture reflected the movement elsewhere, but the city's conservatism and industrial decline offered a richer-than-usual target environment for rebellion. Eyewitness accounts take readers into hangouts and long-lost venues, while interviews with the people who were there trace the ever-changing scene and varied fortunes of local legends like Caustic Defiance, Dollface, and Planes Mistaken for Stars. What emerges is a sympathetic portrait of a youth culture in search of entertainment but just as hungry for community—the shared sense of otherness that, even for one night only, could unite outsiders and discontents under the banner of music. A raucous look at a small-city underground, Punks in Peoria takes readers off the beaten track to reveal the punk rock life as lived in Anytown, U.S.A.
