Book excerpt: The End centers on five friends in Rio de Janeiro who, nearing the end of their lives, are left with memories—of parties, marriages, divorces, fixations, inhibitions, bad decisions—and the physical indignities of aging. Alvaro lives alone and spends his time going from doctor to doctor and bemoaning the evils of his ex-wife. Silvio is a junkie who can’t give up the excesses of sex and drugs even in his old age. Ribeiro is an athletic beach bum enjoying a prolonged sex life thanks to Viagra. Neto is the square member of the group, a faithful husband until his last days. And Ciro is the Don Juan envied by all—but the first to die, struck down by cancer. For all of them, successful careers, personal revelations, and Zen serenity are out of the question, blocked by a seemingly insurmountable wall of frustrations. Orbiting around them are a priest questioning his vocation and a cast of complicated women, neglected and embattled by these self-involved men. Edgy and wise, this tragicomic debut delves into taboo subjects—death, infidelity, impotence, the difficulties of marriage—with unsentimental honesty, and brings Rio and these characters to life in full color.

Book excerpt: John Dos Passos, the distinguished American novelist and historian has been personally interested in Brazil for the last fifteen years. He first visited the country in 1948, and returned again in 1956 and 1962. This book, which is based on his experiences in Brazil, presents the people and landscapes of a young country on the move. Here you will find several extraordinary reports on Brasilia, first in the planning stage, second in the wildly frantic period when it was a half-finished group of buildings, and, finally, as it appeared to Mr. Dos Passos in the summer of 1962 when it was at last beginning to function as a city. Here, too, is the story of Brazil’s great road building program designed to unify the country, and of the political battles in this enormous country which totters on the verge of a Communist takeover. From traveling the length and breadth of the land and from interviewing all kinds of people: politicians like Carlos Lacerda and religious leaders like Bishop Sales, Mr. Dos Passos has been able to transmit some of the flavor of the most important of Latin American nations. Mr. Dos Passos himself is of Portuguese descent, and he speaks Portuguese as well as Spanish. He begins this readable and fascinating book with a much needed short sketch of the history of Brazil and how the Portuguese tradition differs from the Spanish in South America.

Book Brazil s Dance with the Devil

Download or read book Brazil s Dance with the Devil written by Dave Zirin and published by Haymarket Books. This book was released on 2014-05-05 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the Boston Globe’s Best Sports Books of the Year: “Incisive, heartbreaking, important and even funny” (Jeremy Schaap, New York Times–bestselling author of Cinderella Man). The people of Brazil celebrated when it was announced that they were hosting the World Cup—the world’s most-viewed athletic tournament—in 2014 and the 2016 Summer Olympics. But as the events were approaching, ordinary Brazilians were holding the country’s biggest protest marches in decades. Sports journalist Dave Zirin traveled to Brazil to find out why. In a rollicking read that travels from the favelas of Rio de Janeiro to the fabled Maracanã Stadium to the halls of power in Washington, DC, Zirin examines Brazilians’ objections to the corruption of the games they love; the toll such events take on impoverished citizens; and how taking to the streets opened up an international conversation on the culture, economics, and politics of sports. “Millions will enjoy the World Cup and Olympics, but Zirin justly reminds readers of the real human costs beyond the spectacle.” —Kirkus Reviews

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In November 1916, a young Afro-Brazilian musician named Donga registered sheet music for the song "Pelo telefone" ("On the Telephone") at the National Library in Rio de Janeiro. This apparently simple act—claiming ownership of a musical composition—set in motion a series of events that would shake Brazil's cultural landscape. Before the debut of "Pelo telephone," samba was a somewhat obscure term, but by the late 1920s, the wildly popular song had helped to make it synonymous with Brazilian national music. The success of "Pelo telephone" embroiled Donga in controversy. A group of musicians claimed that he had stolen their work, and a prominent journalist accused him of selling out his people in pursuit of profit and fame. Within this single episode are many of the concerns that animate Making Samba, including intellectual property claims, the Brazilian state, popular music, race, gender, national identity, and the history of Afro-Brazilians in Rio de Janeiro. By tracing the careers of Rio's pioneering black musicians from the late nineteenth century until the 1970s, Marc A. Hertzman revises the histories of samba and of Brazilian national culture.

Book A Journey in Brazil

  • Pages : 298 pages

Download or read book A Journey in Brazil written by Louis Agassiz and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-02-21 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Louis Agassiz sheds insight into Brazil's history: his travels took place in the 1860s, when the country was undergoing great change as an Empire and grappling with its this development. The author offers eye-opening accounts of a Brazil now lost to time; observations of the urban culture and life, and the natural habitat of the countryside and forests, offer the reader immense insight into the era. Most of the text is written as a narrative diary, wherein Agassiz observes and describes traversing colonial-era Rio de Janeiro, the city of Manaus, the Amazon river, various small towns and villages, and the vast rainforests. As a zoologist, Agassiz's interest in the diverse wildlife present in Brazil forms a recurring theme in this book. However, the text is careful not to dwell too long on matters obscure or scientific; while the author is clearly at work, he also covers matters of culture and day-to-day life. Anecdotes include lectures which Brazil's Emperor Pedro II attended; the leader arranges the room's chairs that he sits equally with other attendees - reasoning that science does not distinguish people by rank or position. As Agassiz and his company travel through Brazil, we are treated to many vignettes of life. The fiestas, street scenes and atmosphere of the locales are evocatively described. We hear of bustling markets and harbors, plazas in which coffee beans dry, the periodic hunting, and an enmeshed, diverse society blending European habits and native customs. The beginnings of modernity, such as plans for railroads, are also detailed. In a later portion of the book Agassiz expounds on differences between what he terms the 'human races' - opinions which have since come into disrepute. This new edition of A Journey in Brazil reproduces the twenty-five illustrations of the original 1868 text, as well as the author's appendices and notes.

Download or read book Brazil in Crisis written by Marianne Campagna and published by . This book was released on 2020-07 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brazil in Crisis is a sweeping look at the history, culture, politics, and social problems of one of the world's largest and most dynamic countries. Marianne Campagna, who grew up in Brazil, wrote this book to learn why the Brazil of her childhood has become so deeply mired in poverty and corruption. To answer that question, she takes a hard look at the country's troublesome social, economic, and political scenes. At the root of Brazil's many problems is a legacy of slavery and the poverty that resulted from it. Campagna describes life in the favelas (slums), where one third of the population lives, and where drug trafficking and organized crime have embedded themselves. She explores how the government deals with poverty and crime, as well as the government's own corruption. But not all is negative. Brazil has a wonderful culture full of poetry, music, Carnival, and kindness. Campagna explores these cultural traditions and national traits that help the Brazilian people's spirits rise above their current situation. At the book's center is a discussion of the 2018 Presidential Election and Brazil's democratic process. Tracing Brazil's political history, Campagna reveals how right-wing Jair Bolsonaro, known as the "Trump of the Tropics," assumed the presidency, inheriting the economic stagnation that has paralyzed government projects and services and caused extreme inflation. Finally, Campagna offers her vision that Brazil will someday have a progressive government focused on investing in its people and future.
