Book excerpt: Mother Warned You is a violent dose of reality with a Christian message throughout. Adult content, just enough to make it real, also make it interesting. Before you ever get to read it, I want to say that I never had any formal training as a writer. I have heard that a little of the author goes into every character. Im sure that is natural. Teachers also tell you to write about what you know. I did just that. Those are dismal thoughts for me to digest, but, oh well, if you knew me better, youd see me throughout the book. I managed to move about the country so much, that Id be gone from an area before too many got to know me well. Lots of good people only knew me as a roofer or a carpenter. Some only knew me as Snakeman. That was all they needed to know. I kept snakes for many years and still have three. Of course, I like to think of my self as the good guy, basically I am and usually I was. Today, I am for sure. Still, it was too easy to draw on personal thoughts and experience to develop even the most horrible of the bad guys. Every single character in all the stories was patterened after someone Ive crossed paths with in the 55 years Id lived prior to publishing this the first time. Id gotten to know (or be) some of the bad guys too well. Tantrum is a departure from writing norms. The line between good guys and bad guys is only clear due to the truly evil nature of the villians. Cottonmouth and Mikes Place deal with a flexible style of police work that most cops only dream of. Liberal courts stymie the best efforts of good cops. These tales are about how theyd like to operate.

Book Too Soon Old Too Late Smart

Download or read book Too Soon Old Too Late Smart written by Gordon Livingston and published by Da Capo Lifelong Books. This book was released on 2009-04-29 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The beloved bestselling collection of common sense wisdom from a celebrated psychologist and military veteran who proves it's never too late to move beyond the deepest of personal losses After service in Vietnam, as a surgeon for the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment in 1968-69, at the height of the war, Dr. Gordon Livingston returned to the U.S. and began work as a psychiatrist. In that capacity, he has listened to people talk about their lives--what works, what doesn't, and the limitless ways (many of them self-inflicted) that people find to be unhappy. He is also a parent twice bereaved; in one thirteen-month period he lost his eldest son to suicide, his youngest to leukemia. Out of a lifetime of experience, Gordon Livingston has extracted thirty bedrock truths, including: We are what we do. Any relationship is under the control of the person who cares the least. The perfect is the enemy of the good. Only bad things happen quickly. Forgiveness is a form of letting go, but they are not the same thing. The statute of limitations has expired on most of our childhood traumas. Livingston illuminates these and twenty-four other truths in a series of carefully hewn, perfectly calibrated essays, many of which focus on our closest relationships and the things that we do to impede or, less frequently, enhance them. Again and again, these essays underscore that "we are what we do," and that while there may be no escaping who we are, we have the capacity to face loss, misfortune, and regret and to move beyond them--that it is not too late. Full of things we may know but have not articulated to ourselves, Too Soon Old, Too Late Smart offers solace, guidance, and hope to everyone ready to become the person they'd most like to be.

People, including your ex, will go to great lengths to avoid those who they perceive to be emotionally unstable. So, it stands to reason that being emotionally balanced will get you on the road to reconciliation and reconciliation. For the record, the five stages of grief are: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. Let's look at how to handle each of these in terms of breaking up. Find out more inside... 1. Your boyfriend doesn't want to think about another guy having been with you (whether for sex or just hooking up). The thought of another guy getting into bed with you can literally drive him insane. Have you had a tumultuous sexual history with a lot of experience? If this is the case, your boyfriend may have difficulty dealing with it. However, this is something he must accept. Don't let anyone else throw your past in your face or hold it against you. If it's ancient history (or only a few months ago), leave it alone and move on. He must accept you for who you are. If he has chosen to be with you...he must accept you for who you are. That means everything. It doesn't mean he has to like your sexual history, but it does mean he can't hold it against you. • Author : Debbie Macomber
  • Publisher : Ballantine Books
  • Release : 2015-07-21
  • ISBN : 0553391771
  • Pages : 402 pages

Download or read book Love Letters written by Debbie Macomber and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY LIBRARY JOURNAL In this enchanting novel set at Cedar Cove’s cozy Rose Harbor Inn, Debbie Macomber celebrates the power of love—and a well-timed love letter—to inspire hope and mend a broken heart. Summer is a busy season at the inn, so proprietor Jo Marie Rose and handyman Mark Taylor have spent a lot of time together keeping the property running. Despite some folks’ good-natured claims to the contrary, Jo Marie insists that Mark is only a friend. However, she seems to be thinking about this particular friend a great deal lately. Jo Marie knows surprisingly little about Mark’s life, due in no small part to his refusal to discuss it. She’s determined to learn more about his past, but first she must face her own—and welcome three visitors who, like her, are setting out on new paths. Twenty-three-year-old Ellie Reynolds is taking a leap of faith. She’s come to Cedar Cove to meet Tom, a man she’s been corresponding with for months, and with whom she might even be falling in love. Ellie’s overprotective mother disapproves of her trip, but Ellie is determined to spread her wings. Maggie and Roy Porter are next to arrive at the inn. They are taking their first vacation alone since their children were born. In the wake of past mistakes, they hope to rekindle the spark in their marriage—and to win back each other’s trust. But Maggie must make one last confession that could forever tear them apart. For each of these characters, it will ultimately be a moment when someone wore their heart on their sleeve—and took pen to paper—that makes all the difference. Debbie Macomber’s moving novel reveals the courage it takes to be vulnerable, accepting, and open to love. Praise for Love Letters “Romance and a little mystery abound in this third installment of Macomber’s series set at Cedar Cove’s Rose Harbor Inn. . . . Readers of Robyn Carr and Sherryl Woods will enjoy Macomber’s latest, which will have them flipping pages until the end and eagerly anticipating the next installment.”—Library Journal (starred review) “Mending a broken heart is not always easy to do, but Macomber succeeds at this beautifully in Love Letters. . . . Quite simply, this is a refreshing take on most love stories—there are twists and turns in the plot that keep readers on their toes—and the author shares up slices of realism, allowing her audience to feel right at home.”—Bookreporter

Book Downfall

Download or read book Downfall written by Alan McCombes and published by Birlinn. This book was released on 2011-06-16 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From prison cell to the political limelight, and back again, there is no doubt that Tommy Sheridan - tanned, handsome and armed with a soundbite for every occasion - was one of the most colourful figures in the drab, dusty world of party politics. Yet behind the charismatic exterior of the man who first came to public notice during the anti- Poll Tax movement and later led the Scottish Socialist Party to become a strong voice in the new Scottish parliament was a deeply flawed, manipulative individual whose own actions led to one of the most spectacular political downfalls in recent history. Written by his closest political associate for over twenty years, and based on a raft of documentary and eyewitness information, much of it appearing in print for the first time, this is the no-holds barred inside story of the rise and fall of one of the most fascinating figures in recent Scottish politics. Combining elements of tragedy, thriller and farce, it presents the stark, ugly truth behind Sheridan's victorious defamation action against the News of the World in 2006 and subsequent perjury trial in 2010, which contained some of the most dramatic courtroom scenes in Scottish legal history. Yet despite the lurid and sensationalist aspects of Sheridan's life and career, this is also a serious exploration of wider political and psychological themes which offers some salutary lessons at a time when public confidence in politicians has seldom been lower.

Book Warrior Generation 1865 1885

Download or read book Warrior Generation 1865 1885 written by Richard Fulton and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-07-09 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Fulton's Warrior Generation 1865-1885 fundamentally rethinks the efficacy of an institutional drive among influential middle-class opinion leaders to militarize lower-class boys in Victorian Britain. He contends that instead of engendering the desired cultural militarism, as has been commonly argued, their push had merely contributed to a fast-developing culture of adventure and masculinity. Challenging this popular assumption, Fulton carefully reexamines many of the oft cited touchstones of militaristic influence on lower-class boys, deeply assessing their actual effects on the behaviours and cultural practices of this generation. He explores a range of themes from, among others, the propagation of the military's message in school curricula (and its glorification in students' textbooks), to the military's heroic depiction and ubiquitous presence in lower-class boys' entertainment and popular media.

Book Turning Life Into Fiction

Download or read book Turning Life Into Fiction written by Robin Hemley and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2006-05-02 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With lively style, good humor and insight, Robin Hemley helps you turn all that you experience into fresh and powerful fiction. By learning to "reimagine", you'll focus on translating real-world people and events into characters and scenes that happen on paper for the first time. You'll think "what if" instead of "what is" in order to take control of your material and cut loose the inhibitions of real life. In these pages, you'll learn how to hone your observation skills and fill your journal with rich and vivid details. (Because, as Hemley writes, "Life is in the details, and so is good fiction".) You'll see how to decide which ideas to bring to fiction and which ones to let go. And you'll learn how to: find the right form - novel, short story, vignette, memoir - for the story you want to tell; use "triggers" to start your reader's imagination rolling; keep your fiction emotionally honest by making the right choices between "the way it happened" and what the story dictates (ask "Is it believable?", not "Did it happen?"); create composites of real people and places that fit the unique needs of your story and empower your imagination; focus your fiction. Make sure everything, every character counts - and eliminate "people who sit at the end of the bar without a role to play"; fictionalize - ethically and legally - other people's stories. Learn your rights as a writer versus their rights to privacy. (Can you use actual names? When do you need to get permission?). To illustrate how writers feed their fiction with reality, Hemley uses examples from his own work and from fiction masters of yesterday and today. At the end of each chapter, challenging exercises help you apply the basictheories and push them even further. An adventurous read, Turning Life Into Fiction will help you create fiction that's just as strange and wonderful and "real" as the life that inspires it.
