Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Yakima Valley, Washington, Vol. 1: Comprising Yakima, Kittitas and Benton Counties Special note may be made of the hearty cooperation of the newspaper men all over the field. Every newspaper in'the three counties has been consulted. They and their publishers and editors appear in full in the chapter on The Press of the Yakima Valley, and need not be particularized here. Specific mention may be made, however, of files of the earliest Yakima and Ellensburg papers loaned by Mr. C. B. Bagley, of Seattle, some of them probably the only copies in existence, part of what is doubtless the most complete collection of newspaper files in the State. Download or read book The History of the Yakima Fire Department written by Pediment Group, Incorporated, The and published by . This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the first century comes to pass on the Yakima Fire Department, it is with great honor and duty to record its history. A history of many "firsts", that hard work, dedication, and constant support from the good people of Yakima, has made this department second to none. Today, in the year 2005, we have great technology advances, like powerful diesel trucks, computers, radios, electronics that allow us to search through smoke and darkness. Those men that began this department in 1905 could not have imagined such futuristic equipment, no more than we can imagine what this department will be like 100 years from today.

  • Pages : 136 pages

Download or read book Yakima Washington written by Elizabeth Gibson and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early clashes in the 1850s with Native American tribes led to the establishment of the Yakima Indian Reservation just south of the city limits. Soon afterward, settlers came in earnest, having heard of the potential of the valley soil. Captured here in 200 vintage images is the story of the life and times of Yakima's earliest settlers through to the 21st century. In 1884, the town attracted the attention of the Northern Pacific Railroad, which was interested in building a depot. Yakima City landowners refused to cooperate, so the railroad located its depot four miles to the north. In 1918, this new location was reincorporated as Yakima, and Yakima City was renamed Union Gap. Both attracted their share of businessmen and ideas. Frederick Mercy arrived and installed theaters in Yakima and the rest of the state. J.M. Perry, an early fruit packer and shipper, left funds to establish what would become a nationally renowned technical school. These photographs illuminate the history of Yakima's schools, businesses, churches, and agriculture. Images document the social development of the city, family photos from days gone by, the orchards that have played such a large part in the economy, and even an apple pie big enough to feed a whole crowd!

Book excerpt: Leo Adams is a singularly talented artist and designer who has been a creative force in the Pacific Northwest for almost 50 years. Although firmly rooted in the Yakima Valley, where he is a member of the Yakama Nation, his influence has international resonance. Generations of artists, interior designers, and architects have been fascinated, enchanted, and inspired by his home, his art, and Leo himself. His deceptively modest abode just inside the boundary of the Yakama Reservation has been featured in many important architecture and design publications. This volume features a biography by noted author and arts writer Sheila Farr. Linda Tesner , director and curator of the Ronna and Eric Hoffman Gallery of Contemporary Art at Lewis & Clark College contributes an essay on his home and his painting. Michael Burns 's photos reveal Adams' ability to create Palladian elegance out of the humblest of materials, usually using his own craft and carpentry skills as well as his eye for finding beauty in the mundane.

Book Yakima Valley Transportation Company

Download or read book Yakima Valley Transportation Company written by Kenneth G. Johnsen and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2010-09-20 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Register of Historic Places lists the Yakima Valley Transportation Company (YVT) as the last intact early 20th century electric interurban railroad in America. From its beginning in 1907, the YVT was no quitter, surviving a takeover by the Union Pacific, large financial losses as the last trolley railroad in Washington state, attempts at dieselization, and a concerted effort to put the company in its grave. Thanks to the efforts of local preservationists, YVT trolleys are still in operation. The railroad and its infrastructure never changed. What is seen today is what was built 100 years agoa living slice of history. Images of Rail: Yakima Valley Transportation Company is the most authoritative chronicle of the famous YVT yet compiled.
