Download or read book Marine Genomics written by Sarah J. Bourlat and published by Humana. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the latest protocols for both laboratory and bioinformatics based analyses in the field of marine genomics. The chapters presented in the book cover a wide range of topics, including the sampling and genomics of bacterial communities, DNA extraction in marine organisms, high-throughput sequencing of whole mitochondrial genomes, phylogenomics, SNP discovery, SNP-arrays for species identification, digital PCR-based quantification methods, environment DNA for invasive species surveillance and monitoring, microarrays for the detection of waterborne pathogens, DNA barcoding of marine biodiversity, metabarcoding protocols for marine eukaryotes, analytical protocols for the visualization of eukaryotic diversity, and applications for genomic data to benthic indices for environmental monitoring. Written in the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology series format, chapters include introduction to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Cutting-edge and thorough, Marine Genomics: Methods and Protocols is a valuable resource for researchers, students, and policy makers in the field of marine biology.
Download or read book Population Biology and Evolution written by K. Wöhrmann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the papers presented at a symposium on popula tion biology sponsored by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. It was . held at the guest house of the University of Ttibingen at Oberjoch on May 15-19, 1983. Prior to this conference a small group of European biologists had met in Berlin (June 1981) and Pavia (September 1982) to discuss re search problems on the borderline between population genetics and evolutionary ecology. From the contributions and discussions at these meetings it became evident that the unification of approaches to evolutionary problems in population genetics and evolutionary ecology has not yet been suc cessful and requires further efforts. It was the consensus that a larger symposium with international participation would be helpful to con front and discuss the different approaches to population biology in order to assess "where we are now" and "where we should be going. " As a result an organizational committee was formed (F. Christiansen, S. Jayakar, V. Loeschcke, W. Scharloo, and K. W6hrmann) to iden tify topics that seemed, at least to them, to be fruitful in tackling problems in population biology. Consequently, a number of colleagues were asked to participate in the meeting. We have divided this book into chapters corresponding to the eight topics chosen. The volume begins with the relation between genotype and phenotype and is followed by a chapter on quantitative genetics and selection in natural populations.
Download or read book The Future of Natural History Museums written by Eric Dorfman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural history museums are changing, both because of their own internal development and in response to changes in context. Historically, the aim of collecting from nature was to develop encyclopedic assemblages to satisfy human curiosity and build a basis for taxonomic information. Today, with global biodiversity in rapid decline, there are new reasons to build and maintain collections, while audiences are more diverse, numerous, and technically savvy. Institutions must learn to embrace new technology while retaining the authenticity of their stories and the value placed on their objects. The Future of Natural History Museums begins to develop a cohesive discourse that balances the disparate issues that our institutions will face over the next decades. It disassembles the topic into various key elements and, through commentary and synthesis, explores a cohesive picture of the trajectory of the natural history museum sector. This book contributes to the study of collections, teaching and learning, ethics, and running non-profit businesses and will be of interest to museum and heritage professionals and academics and senior students in Biological Sciences and Museum Studies.
