Book People Remembering Whitney Houston

Download or read book People Remembering Whitney Houston written by The Editors of PEOPLE and published by People. This book was released on 2012-03-27 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Her's was a skyrocket of a life, a tale of beauty, soaring talent, and the risks of stardom. Whitney Houston was born to sing: Her mom, Cissy Houston, is a noted gospel singer; Dionne Warwick was her cousin, soul great Aretha Franklin her aunt. And she was beautiful: Before she ever had a big radio hit, a teenage Whitney was booking modeling gigs in major magazines. Legendary talent guru Clive Davis heard her sing in a club and signed her at 19; her first album, Whitney Houston, spawned three No. 1 hits and made her a staple on MTV. Seven years later, The Bodyguard made her a movie star. But at the height of an almost-unprecedented arc, something went wrong. Marriage to singer Bobby Brown coincided with a slip from the pinnacle; soon Houston was missing shows, behaving erratically and, eventually, admitting to drug problems. A comeback had started to gain traction-until, the night before the 2012 Grammy Awards, the 48-year-old star was found dead, of unspecified causes, in her Beverly Hills hotel room. Packed with photos and insight, People: Remembering Whitney Houston looks back on wonder, and drama, of a remarkable life.

Book excerpt: Terpning, the storyteller of the Plains Indians, presents his most important paintings of the past 35 years Howard Terpning is one of the most lauded painters of Western art and considered by many to be a national treasure. He is known as the "storyteller of the Native American" because of his devotion to and respect for his subject matter, almost exclusively the Plains Indian. He particularly favors the period beginning in the late eighteenth century when a Great Plains culture of Indians and horses thrived along with the buffalo. Passion, compassion, extraordinary talent in palette and brushstroke, and an exceptional ability to evoke emotion and narrative in his paintings have made his work rise to the top as he strives to keep alive the heritage and culture of Native Americans through the power of art. With more than 120 full-color paintings, this volume is the most comprehensive collection of Howard Terpning's work to date. The text by fellow artist Harley Brown provides a unique artist's view of Terpning's oeuvre through discussions of his colors, composition, inspiration, and sheer talent.

Since 1942 this enduring paean to black America has remained an everlasting appeal against racial oppression." ""I wrote most of that poem," Margaret Walker says, "in fifteen minutes on a typewriter. I think it was just after my twenty-second birthday, and I felt it was my whole life gushing out - as I had felt about my people all my life."" "Since that time the astonishing young poet whose voice rose in cadences that praise and honor black America has never ceased to stir minds and hearts to action with her credos. She became indeed the renowned poet, novelist, lecturer, teacher, and sage Margaret Walker Alexander." "In commemoration of "For My People," her first publication, and in tribute to her richly productive life, the acclaimed photographer Roland L. Freeman has joined a photo essay to Margaret Walker's poem." ""I selected photographs that call to mind the special human elements evoked by Walker, so basic to everyday life, and yet not often celebrated, elements which unravel the real beauty and the tenacity for life of African-American people."" "With this marvelous collaboration both Walker and Freeman stimulate rejoicing for the spirit of the artist who perceives and depicts the rich and vital culture of black America." Download or read book The Laughing People written by Serge Bouchard and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2021-08-18 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Laughing People, translated from the award-winning Le peuple rieur, conveys the richness and resilience of the Innu while reminding us of the forces – old and new – that threaten their community. This memoir and tribute tells the tale of the very long journey of a very small nation, recounting both its joie de vivre and its crosses borne. Readers follow Serge Bouchard, a young anthropologist in the 1970s, as he arrives in Ekuanitshit (Mingan, Quebec) and comes to know its residents. His observations and questions document a community weathering yet another season of change – skidoos replace dogsleds and forests are bulldozed for prefabricated housing – while nonetheless defying external pressures to assimilate or disappear altogether. Returning to these texts fifty years later, Bouchard moves beyond platitudes of strength and dives into wide-scale injustices to present the sacrifices and beauty of the Innu people on individual terms. Whether recounting the impact of the residential school system on Georges Mestokosho, the wave of Innu activism inspired by An Antane Kapesh, or the uncelebrated work of women like Nishapet Enim, The Laughing People presents an opportunity for readers to be part of the preservation and proliferation of these important stories.

Book Tribute System and Rulership in Late Imperial China

Download or read book Tribute System and Rulership in Late Imperial China written by Ralph Kauz and published by V&R Unipress. This book was released on 2022-04-11 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Demanding and offering tribute is a most common feature in human societies and nothing special to China. In the course of the development of Neolithic and later societies social classes have developed where persons who achieved superior positions first could demand 'presents' or tribute from neighboring societies they defeated and then, with the assistance of sturdy 'servants' from their own people. China was certainly no exception to that principle and one of the first terms for tax was thus 'gong', tribute. In China's early, 'feudatory' social system, tribute was demanded from lower political entities, and the mutual 'political' relations were already highly developed during the Zhou dynasty (1045–256 BCE). This system of 'inner Chinese' relations became a sort of matrix when China expanded and achieved contact with countries which were more or less independent, and thus the 'tribute system' evolved. The individual case studies in this volume focus on the latest manifestations of the tribute system in late Imperial China.

Book Surf Tribe

Book excerpt: - An incomparable new photo book about the international surf culture by Stephan Vanfleteren- Showcases captivating portraits of some of the world's surf iconsWith Surf Tribe, photographer Stephan Vanfleteren shows that there is far more to surf culture than just sport and competition. Surfing is also about a deep admiration and respect for the ocean, as well as the feeling of insignificance when confronted with the forces of nature. Surfers use the waves for fun, but also to forget and to battle, both with others and with themselves. Vanfleteren looks beyond the traditional borders of the United States and Australia and searches the globe for people who live in places where sea and land meet. He documents a fluid community, with nature as its sole leader. He has sought out young talent, living icons, and old legends, both competitive and free surfers. The photographs here are serene black and white portraits in Vanfleteren's well-known, haunting style; as always, he reaches below the surface and goes to the core of his subjects. Included, amongst many others, are Kelly Slater, Gerry Lopez, John Florence, Mickey Munoz, Filipe Toledo and Stephanie Gilmore. Surfer, journalist, and actor Gerry Lopez has contributed the Foreword. Surf Tribe has been exhibited in Knokke-Heist (Belgium), Kunsthal Rotterdam (Netherlands), Gallery Kahmann Amsterdam (Netherlands). The next exhibition will be in June 2019 in France. Book excerpt: A brilliant picture book biography about Thurgood Marshall, who fought for equality during the Civil Rights Movement and served as the first Black justice on the Supreme Court, from Coretta Scott King Honor winners Kekla Magoon and Laura Freeman. Growing up in Baltimore, Thurgood Marshall could see that things weren’t fair. The laws said that Black and white people couldn’t use the same schools, parks, or water fountains. When Thurgood had to read the Constitution as punishment for a prank at school, his eyes were opened. It was clear to him that Jim Crow laws were wrong, and he was willing to do whatever it took to change them. His determination to make sure all Americans were treated equally led him to law school and then the NAACP, where he argued cases like Brown v. Board of Education in front of the Supreme Court. But to become a Justice on the highest court in the land, Thurgood had to make space for himself every step of the way. Readers will be inspired by Kekla Magoon’s concise text and Laura Freeman’s luminous illustrations, which bring Thurgood Marshall’s incredible legacy and achievements to life. * An SLJ Best Book of the Year * A Bank Street Best Book of the Year * A Jane Addams Children's Book Award Finalist * A Texas Topaz Nonfiction Selection * Wisconsin State Reading Association’s 2022 Picture This Recommendation List * Indiana Authors Award Shortlist *
