Book excerpt: "The title piece of this collection was an immediate sensation when it was published in China in September 1979. an outstanding example of 'reportage', or fictionalized social analysis, 'People or Monsters?' is a story of the corruption of an entire commune in a small county of the remote Heilongjiang Province of northeastern China. There female candre by the name of Wang Shouxin gained control of the commune and ran it for her personal benefit. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every one of us is both a hero and a monster, and the world we inhabit is both beautiful and twisted. We are shaken by changes, losses, gains, insights, desires, mistakes, and transitions. And just when we've gotten settled back down, things get shaken up again. This is the life we've been given. So how do we make sense of life's unexpected nature, find a way to embrace the tension, and live with a sense of peace despite pain? In this stunningly honest, compelling, and ultimately hopeful book, Josh James Riebock explores issues of trust, obedience, intimacy, dreams, grief, purpose, and the unexpected stops along the journey that form us into the people we are. In a creative way, he shows readers that pain and beauty are so inextricably linked that to lose the former costs us the latter. Those grappling with life's inconsistencies and trials will especially find a welcome resonance between their lives and Heroes and Monsters. Riebock both validates their experiences and challenges them to live beyond them in this ever-changing life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year is 1912. The world is reeling from the worldwide Great Depression, which has left every nation on earth reeling financially. During this time, two camps of nations have risen to prominence. The nations of America, France, England, and Russia, despite the economic collapses, have managed to start to pull themselves out of the Great Depression. On the other side is the UMN, the United Monster Nations, comprised of Transylvania (home of the vampires), Luciansburg (home of the werewolves, or Lycans), Covenia (home of the Witches or Wiccans), and Decemus (home of the zombies, or the walking dead). Both groups of nations are weary of one another. The UMN is ruled over with an iron hand by Grand Chancellor Alucard, who has brought to an end the centuries-long war between the monster races and has had the monster clans united in their hatred of mankind. At the outset of our story, the UMN has been on a military buildup for more than ten years now and is planning a massed military assault against the human nations listed above for control of the Earth. Though they preach for peace with America, this is just a clever ruse by Lord Alucard to buy his nations more time to prepare for war. One can only imagine the horrors of a conventional war. Gone are the days of lining up soldiers and having them simply walk into oncoming fire. This is a new century with new ways of warfare. A conventional war could mean the deaths of countless millions of lives, both monster and human.

The study traces how these monsters evolved from objects of curiosity, to scientific cases, to legally independent beings. The works examined here point to the intricate cultural, religious, ethical, and scientific perceptions of monstrous individuals who were fixtures in contemporary courts.

  • Pages : 142 pages

Download or read book Monsters written by Charles Eisenmann and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1880s (America¿s Gilded Age), New York¿s Bowery roared day and night like no other street in the world. Home to countless beer halls, melodrama theatres, and dime museum exotic shows, this strip of diversions entertained the newly arrived immigrant masses - the first generation to work in corporate factories, live in high-rises, eat processed food, and banish the night with electric lights. As city population densities swelled to a third of a million per square mile, these urban workers took a certain Darwinian pleasure in staring at freaks-living proof that life could be even worse. Photographer Charles Eisenmann¿s studio at 229 Bowery stood right in the middle of it all. As &;ldquo;the oldest, the largest, and the best," Eisenmann practised photography at a time when it was still a black art - a series of mysterious and complex procedures executed in darkness. Working in his studio of elaborate high Victorian sets, Eisenmann acted as court photographer to all of the era¿s most famous giants, dwarfs, and exotics. Classified as "monsters" by doctors of the day, Eisenmann¿s sitters included the four-legged lady (Myrtle Corbin), the Sacred Hairy Family of Burma, the diminutive Admiral Dot, a thousand- pound fat-man, Zip the Pin-head, and even the biggest hoaxer of them all - the inventor of the travelling circus and modern advertising - the great P.T. Barnum. Eisenmann¿s beautifully crafted photographs made his weird clients as famous and successful as any rock star or royalty.

Book Monsters Monstrosities and the Monstrous in Culture and Society

Download or read book Monsters Monstrosities and the Monstrous in Culture and Society written by Diego Compagna and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on 2020-01-28 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Existing research on monsters acknowledges the deep impact monsters have especially on Politics, Gender, Life Sciences, Aesthetics and Philosophy. From Sigmund Freud’s essay ‘The Uncanny’ to Scott Poole’s ‘Monsters in America’, previous studies offer detailed insights about uncanny and immoral monsters. However, our anthology wants to overcome these restrictions by bringing together multidisciplinary authors with very different approaches to monsters and setting up variety and increasing diversification of thought as ‘guiding patterns’. Existing research hints that monsters are embedded in social and scientific exclusionary relationships but very seldom copes with them in detail. Erving Goffman’s doesn’t explicitly talk about monsters in his book ‘Stigma’, but his study is an exceptional case which shows that monsters are stigmatized by society because of their deviations from norms, but they can form groups with fellow monsters and develop techniques for handling their stigma. Our book is to be understood as a complement and a ‘further development’ of previous studies: The essays of our anthology pay attention to mechanisms of inequality and exclusion concerning specific historical and present monsters, based on their research materials within their specific frameworks, in order to ‘create’ engaging, constructive, critical and diverse approaches to monsters, even utopian visions of a future of societies shared by monsters. Our book proposes the usual view, that humans look in a horrified way at monsters, but adds that monsters can look in a critical and even likewise frightened way at the very societies which stigmatize them.
