Book excerpt: Excerpt from Penny Guide to Stirling, Stirling Castle, Wallace Monument, Bannockburn, &C Visitors having arrived in Stirling, the first and greatest attraction is Stirling Castle (no. 1 in map of the Four Chief Objects of Interest) By turning to bird's-eye Plan, tourists will have no difficulty in finding their way towards the Castle, and at the' same time noticing the chief streets and buildings of this historic town. Leaving the Railway Station, you pass up the Station Road, crossing over what at one time was the ground of the Blackfriars Monastery. At' the head of Station Road stands the Free North Church with spire, and the Arcade, which leads to Arcade Hall and King Street. Turning to the left, along Murray Place, you pass the Baptist Chapel and the North Established Church. A little further along King Street is reached. The corner building on the right is the British Linen Co.'s Bank, formerly Drummond's Tract Depot. From the foot of King Street the tramway oars start for Bridge of Allan and Wallace Monument. At the top of King Street stands the Burgh Buildings, with a fine statue of Sir William Wallace surmounting the entrance. Continue your walk straight up either of the streets, Baker Street or Spittal Street, which go right and left of the Burgh Buildings. There is a walk through the trees called the Back Walk, which runs parallel withthese two streets, and comes out at Stirling Castle. This can be entered to the left of Burgh Buildings by the corn-exchange. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book William Wallace

Download or read book William Wallace written by James Mackay and published by Random House. This book was released on 2012-01-27 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir William Wallace of Ellerslie is one of history's greatest heroes, but also one of its greatest enigmas - a shadowy figure whose edges have been blurred by myth and legend. Even the date and place of his birth have been mis-stated - until now. James Mackay uses all his skills as a historical detective to produce this definitive biography, telling the incredible story of a man who, without wealth or noble birth, rose to become Guardian of Scotland. William Wallace, with superb generalship and tactical genius, led a country with no previous warlike tradition to triumph gloriously over the much larger, better-armed and better-trained English forces. Seven hundred years later, the heroism and betrayal, the valiant deeds and the dark atrocities, and the struggle of a small nation against a brutal and powerful empire, still create a compelling tale.

Download or read book When Scotland Was Jewish written by Elizabeth Caldwell Hirschman and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-05-07 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The popular image of Scotland is dominated by widely recognized elements of Celtic culture. But a significant non-Celtic influence on Scotland's history has been largely ignored for centuries? This book argues that much of Scotland's history and culture from 1100 forward is Jewish. The authors provide evidence that many of the national heroes, villains, rulers, nobles, traders, merchants, bishops, guild members, burgesses, and ministers of Scotland were of Jewish descent, their ancestors originating in France and Spain. Much of the traditional historical account of Scotland, it is proposed, rests on fundamental interpretive errors, perpetuated in order to affirm Scotland's identity as a Celtic, Christian society. A more accurate and profound understanding of Scottish history has thus been buried. The authors' wide-ranging research includes examination of census records, archaeological artifacts, castle carvings, cemetery inscriptions, religious seals, coinage, burgess and guild member rolls, noble genealogies, family crests, portraiture, and geographic place names.

Book excerpt: The life of Robert Bruce is one of the greatest comeback stories in history. Heir and magnate, shrewd politician, briefly 'king of summer' and then a desperate fugitive who nevertheless returned from exile to recover the kingdom he claimed, Bruce became a gifted military leader and a wise statesman, a leader with vision and energy. Colm McNamee combines the most up to date scholarship on this crucial figure in the history of the British Isles with lucid explanation of the medieval context, so that readers of all backgrounds can appreciate Bruce's enormous contribution to the historical impact not just on Scotland, but on England and Ireland too. It is designed to encourage popular reassessment of Bruce as politician, warrior, monarch and saviour of Scottish identity from extinction at the hands of the Edwardian superstate. Peeling back the layers of misconception and propaganda, the author paints an accurate, sympathetic but balanced portrait of a much beloved national hero who has fallen out of fashion of late for no good reason.

Book The Comic History of England

Download or read book The Comic History of England written by Gilbert Abbott À Beckett and published by . This book was released on 1894 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A'Beckett and Leech were original contributors to "Punch, or the London Charivari" magazine, established 1841. It became the famous "Punch" magazine and remained in publication to 2002. A'Beckett also wrote editorials for a similar concept magazine, "Figaro in London" that ceased publication in 1839. "In commencing this work, the object of the Author was, as he stated in the Prospectus, to blend amusement with instruction, by serving up, in as palatable a shape as he could, the facts of English History. He pledged himself not to sacrifice the substance to the seasoning; and though he has certainly been a little free in the use of his sauce, he hopes that he has not produced a mere hash on the present occasion. His object has been to furnish something which may be allowed to take its place as a standing at the library table, and which, though light, may not be found devoid of nutriment."--Preface.
