Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rolland Bane: A Thrilling Romance of the Hazel Mountains of Pennsylvania, in Verse Fifteen births of genial summer from the pregnant womb of time; Fifteen winters saw them buried while they yet were in their prime. Kings have reigned and princes flourished, empires rose and kingdoms fell, Men of power and fame have perished, and their number who can tell? Wars have ruined, famine wasted, pestilence in darkness stalked, Cities have been laid in ruins while the mighty earthquake rocked. Fires have raged on plain and forest, storms have howled along the shore; While the smaller towns have crumbled 'neath the cyclone's awful roar. Generals and brilliant captains who victorious armies led, All have gone to answer roll call in the bivouac of the dead. Men of genius, men of talent, men of culture, men of worth, All have fallen by the Reaper, mingled with the dust of earth. Hoary time has not been idle since the youthful Rolland led Fair young Phoebe from the altar to the sacred bridal bed. She a maid of twenty summers. He a youth of twenty-three; Setting sail on life's great ocean in the ship called Ecstasy. Which they hoped would bear them over to the fairy land of Fame. All her fruits are golden apples; Fortune's Goddess rules the same. Life to them was full of promise on that happy wedding day; She was young and fair and gentle, he was strong and proud and gay. Gardens had been devastated to adorn their flowery way, Now the bridal flowers have withered, thorns have sprung up by the way. She looks pale and thin and tired; now his hair is turning gray. Would you hear the thrilling story how he prospered in the strife? By what path his feet have wandered up and down the hills of life? Why he left his father's dwelling Where he was a mother's pride? Book Pennsylvania in Public Memory

Download or read book Pennsylvania in Public Memory written by Carolyn Kitch and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What stories do we tell about America’s once-great industries at a time when they are fading from the landscape? Pennsylvania in Public Memory attempts to answer that question, exploring the emergence of a heritage culture of industry and its loss through the lens of its most representative industrial state. Based on news coverage, interviews, and more than two hundred heritage sites, this book traces the narrative themes that shape modern public memory of coal, steel, railroading, lumber, oil, and agriculture, and that collectively tell a story about national as well as local identity in a changing social and economic world.

Book A Fresh Look at Genesis 1 2

Download or read book A Fresh Look at Genesis 1 2 written by Gary W Schneider and published by Rio Pindo Publishing, LLC. This book was released on 2021-03-15 with total page 1132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of this book’s main themes is how God’s ‘Book of Nature’ is concordant with His ‘Book of Scripture’. In their writings, many of the pioneers of the Scientific Revolution often referred to God’s two ‘Books’. These brilliant naturalists were also devout Christians. But that was back then. Is modern science actually compatible with Scripture? More to the point, are the findings of 21st-century science concordant with the Genesis creation story? What else does the text of Genesis 1-2 have to say? While making an honest effort to answer those questions, some vitally-important theological concepts (which were introduced by Moses in the first two chapters of Genesis) are also examined and discussed in this volume. This comprehensive study (on how modern science is concordant with the intended meaning of the text of Genesis 1-2) has many useful features, including the following: Much of the first two parts of the book consists of background material on: (1) logic, (2) history and philosophy of science, and (3) ‘scientific method’, as well as (4) basic geological principles, (5) descriptions of Plate Tectonic theory, and (6) the principles and methods of radiometric dating. This background material is designed to help the reader to understand the implications of the empirical evidence presented in Part Two: God’s Book of Nature. Similarly, there is also extensive material on: (1) Biblical interpretation and hermeneutics, (2) textual criticism, (3) the history of ancient Israel, (4) development of the Hebrew language, and (5) some of the basic elements of Biblical Hebrew. This material is given prior to looking at the literary structure and genre of the Genesis 1-2 text, and then conducting thorough and complete exegetical analyses of the various textual units of Genesis 1-2 in Part Four: God’s Book of Scripture. Prior to the exegetical analyses for each of the textual units of Genesis 1-2, (1) the Biblical Hebrew text, (2) a standard English translation, and (3) an Interlinear version of the text of that unit are provided. The Interlinear version consists of (a) the Hebrew text, with (b) SBL transliterations and (c) English glosses below each one of the Hebrew words. Color coding and other types of annotations/highlighting are used throughout Part Four: God’s Book of Scripture, in order to help the reader identify important Biblical Hebrew elements, including recurring phrases, important BH words, and key BHVS verb forms. There are more than 2000 detailed footnotes. Many of these footnotes also cross-reference other topics in the book to make it easier for the reader to refer back to a discussion of some important theme or concept. Excerpts from the entries of reputable Hebrew and Greek lexicons (for words written in the original languages of the Biblical text) are also footnoted. An Appendix is included with a Key to Transliteration and Pronunciation for Biblical Hebrew graphemes; it also has a short section on Biblical Hebrew Accent Markings. Numerous detailed, colored figures are sprinkled throughout the text. In many of these figures, the artwork itself is worth the inexpensive price of the digital edition of this book. Part Six: The Good News is worth reading as a stand-alone exposition of God’s Grace, but it also helps put the rest of the book in context. Although the most common (and logical) way to read A Fresh Look at Genesis 1-2 is from start to finish, this 1100-page book was also intended to be used as a reference work. Footnotes direct the reader back to pertinent material in preceding chapters that might not have been read already (or that readers might want to revisit, in order to refresh their memory on some topic). Book University of Pennsylvania in Its Relations to the State of Pennsylvania Classic Reprint

Download or read book University of Pennsylvania in Its Relations to the State of Pennsylvania Classic Reprint written by Samuel Whitaker Pennypacker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-21 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from University of Pennsylvania in Its Relations to the State of Pennsylvania The settlement of Pennsylvania being due to the unrest of the members of a religious sect whose advanced thought brought them into conflict with existing conditions in Eng land, and the moral and mental breadth of its founder having led him to offer it as a home, not only for those of his own way of thinking, but for all in that island and upon the Continent who had in vain wrestled against intolerance, it was but natural that his province should attract more men of learning than other colonies whose promoters were simply seeking for profit, or were bent upon the enforcement of illiberal policies. Therefore it came about that among the early colonists of Pennsylvania were an unusual number of men of scholarly attainments, some of Whom had been doughty champions upon one side or the other in the po lemical warfare then being everywhere waged, a struggle necessary for, and preparatory to, the establishment of the principle that humanity is capable of governing itself. Penn, the founder of a successful State and a practical legislator whose work has stood the test of time, as well as the most conspicuous figure among the colonizers of America, was a student of Oxford University and a profuse Writer of books of verse, travel, doctrine, and controversy, which made a strong impress upon the thought of his time.
