Book The Changing of Historic Place Names

Download or read book The Changing of Historic Place Names written by George P. Donehoo and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-07-30 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Changing of Historic Place Names: With an Introduction and Glossary of Some Historic Names Changed or Misspelled in Pennsylvania Some of these early names are most beautiful lto hear, and some are not. But they are all of interest and historic value. Many of the most beautiful sounding names. And names of his toric value, 'have disappeared entirely from Ithe map of the state. Wyoming is an illustration of the disappearance of an old, beau tiful and historic name. Many people think that the name Wyoming belongs to the state to which it migrated from the beautiful vale of Pennsylvania, where it was made historic for all time. Some of the earliest place names now are applied to town-s and topographical features far removed from the place which gave them brath. Shamokin is an illustration of this change. This name is one of the very oldest on the Susquehanna River, and it was used during-the entire period of settlement, as well asduring the period of Indian occupancy, when the vice-gerent of the Iroquois Confederacy made it the Indian capitol of Penn sylvani'a. All of.the early travelers and all of the official docu ments relating to Indian affairs use this name for the present Sunbury. The name Sham-okin has been given to a town which is in no way connected with the historic town from which this name was taken. In order to 1avoid confusion, a historical writer now has to always refer to the old, historic place in this manner Shamokin (now Su The same rule has to apply to the other historic village of Wyoming. When this place is men tioned, the statement must be made as Wyoming (now Wilkes Barre). Probably the greatest crime of all is that which was committed by some classical school teacher in the change which was made from Tioga to Athens. The author in other publica tions has referred to the trail of the massacre of Indian place names by these classic school teachers from New England. It was one of the sad results of the Connecticut Settlement of Pennsylvania and Western New York. The Indian names were slaughtered without pity. The scotch-irish in Pennsylvania killed the Indians, but spared the names which the Indians had given to the rivers and mountains in the region in which they had lived. The New England school teacher slaughtered the names. Follow the trail of these classical scholars from Athens up into New York and you find a vertiable trail of blood of historic and beautiful Indian names. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pennsylvania Boroughs It may perhaps insure greater clearness to explain here that we have used the word town in this paper as it is used in Pennsylvania, where it is applied indifferently to a large village, a borough, or a city, but not to the township. The term borough has not this general application, like the town, but always means the incorporated village or town pos sessing a particular form of government. Boroughsl are by courtesy sometimes called cities, but cities are not called boroughs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Indian Villages and Place Names in Pennsylvania

Download or read book Indian Villages and Place Names in Pennsylvania written by George P. Donehoo and published by Sunbury Press, Incorporated. This book was released on 2014-10-22 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1928 by The Telegraph Press as "A History of the Indian Villages and Place Names in Pennsylvania with Numerous Historical Notes and References." This book, Dr. George P. Donehoo's "Indian Villages and Place Names in Pennsylvania," was written and published in the early 20th century. That was a time when Americans were just beginning to become enthusiastic fans of much that was, or seemed to be, related to Native Americans. That was a time when Americans romanticized about the people who lived here before the Europeans and others arrived. During the time that Dr. Donehoo was creating this informative book, Americans couldn't get enough of the popularized images of Indians. Books, paintings, songs and movies delivered exciting images of Native American life. "Indian Villages and Place Names in Pennsylvania" is a valuable reference book for anyone, student or other, who wants to learn more about the land's inhabitants before it ever became "Penn's Woods." Although first published in 1928, it was reprinted in 1977. Now it is being reprinted again. The need for this reprint comes from Dr. Donehoo's translations of the hundreds of Native American names that appear across the commonwealth. We must accept a sorry fact: Pennsylvania's Native American population is almost totally gone from the commonwealth. In addition, the main things that they left behind might be their countless arrowheads and their hundreds of Native American place names. While not all citizens of the Keystone State are interested in our state's Indian heritage, all should be aware of it. The author, Dr. George P. Donehoo, was a scholar who studied many aspects of Native American culture. At the time that he was studying and writing, there had been very little archaeology to support his work; yet Dr. Donehoo was able to explain much about the Native Americans' several languages, their sweeping historical events and the many important historical sources on which he based his information. Above all, "Indian Villages and Place Names in Pennsylvania" explains the meanings of hundreds of Indian names-from Achsinning (Standing Stone) to Zinachson (Demon's Den) that still appear throughout our commonwealth. Although most Native Americans and their culture have vanished from Pennsylvania, their colorful place names are a permanent reminder of their once-vibrant presence. Because Dr. George P. Donehoo was so diligent and conscientious in his work, this book explains those fascinating names. For the many readers who do appreciate our Native American heritage, this book will continue to be a welcome addition to their libraries. The reader will soon realize why "Indian Villages and Place Names in Pennsylvania" is a marvelous reference work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annals of Pennsylvania: From the Discovery of the Delaware Another desirable object of research connected with this early period, was the arrival and settlement of the English on our river, respecting which but little was known. As the first attempts were made by New Haven and other parts of New England, the author, (notwithstanding the records of the United Colonies had been generally examined by his father, and published in his Historical Collections, ) supposing that some facts could be found which had not attracted his attention, carefully examined the records in New Haven, Hart ford, Boston, and Plymouth, as well in the public oiiices as in possession of Historical Societies there, and in New York; which research, though not very fruitful, furnished some documents, which appear in their proper places in this work. Besides these, the records at New Castle and Dover have been put under requisition for information respecting the English, after the dis appearance of the Dutch and Swedes. Much valuable matter was thence obtained, especially at the former place, respecting the courts, (which then, under the governors at New York, managed affairs of both church and state, ) early grants of land, the landing, and taking possession by Penn, &c. The records in our own public ofiices have not furnished much information rela tive to this period, though they no doubt will be of value for the subsequent portion of the work. From these, and all other promising sources, the author has endeavoured, with much labour, time, and expense, to obtain the most authentic infor mation Of this early period, in which but little assistance could be derived from books or individuals. Only they who have been in the practice of examining ancient records, can appreciate the difficulty frequently attend ing it, in deciphering the names of persons and places, &c. This is men tioned to account, in part, for the variety, used in printing names, it being often impossible to ascertain the correct mode of spelling, as well as the person or place intended. In general, the mode adopted by the writers has been employed. Many places cannot, at the present time, be identified by the name.
