Book Pennsylvania Mountain Landmarks Volume 1

Download or read book Pennsylvania Mountain Landmarks Volume 1 written by Jeffrey R Frazier and published by Pennsylvania Mountain Landmarks. This book was released on 2023-04-24 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, and subsequent volumes, include accounts of the author's explorations of little-traveled byways and remote hilltops in the mountains of Pennsylvania. His descriptions and photos of the unique and unusual places he discovered will appeal to all those who seek adventure and who like to explore odd and mysterious places; places like the Devil's Dining Room, the Indian Steps, the Thousand Steps, Ticklish Rock, Umbrella Rock, and many others that are highlighted in the Pennsylvania Mountain Landmarks series. Much to his delight he also found that there are human interest stories and historical accounts that cling to these same spots and which seem as old as the rocks themselves; tales, that are steeped in the spiritual charm of the Native American and imbued with the pioneering spirit of the Pennsylvania wilderness as it existed when the earliest settlers penetrated its dark interior. Such accounts are the stuff of which legends are made and which add color and mystique to the mountains, forming their very soul. It is this breath of life, hints of a less-complicated and more compelling past that led the author to find the spots where it still survives, and to bask in the local color and lore that surround those places. In this volume: The King's Stool (Dauphin County) Stairways to the Stars (Berks et al.) Umbrella Rock (Elk County) The Three Sisters (Huntingdon County) Lewis' Rock (Cumberland County) Infernal Evidence (Clearfield et al.) Memento Mori (Jefferson et al.) Picture Rocks (Lycoming County) Boxcar Rocks (Lebanon County) Warriors' Mark (Huntingdon County) Vampire Rock (Clinton County) More of the Same (multiple counties)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pennsylvania Mountain Stories Mccargo, in response to the proprietor's query of supper, said he had eaten and asked to be shown to his room. A boy, with cataracts on his eyes, who was carrying his grip, groped the way up stairs and unlocked the door of room 18, in the oldest part of the house. Originally it had been an enormous room, running from the front to the back of the house, but it had been di vided into two rooms by a partition made of a lot of door frames, fastened together with the knobs and locks still on them. The partition looked more like a hallway in a many-roomed apartment house in a big city than the dividing wall between two bed chambers in a coun try hotel. The furniture consisted of a wooden bed, which was painted green with red flower designs, and a wash stand and chair. There was blue paper but not a picture on the wall. In one corner were a couple of iron hooks for clothing. The house had been so added to that there was only one window left in this room. And it looked out on the stable yard, now used as a stor age ground for bark wagons. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Indian Steps: And Other Pennsylvania Mountain Stories Least they came from sources equally reliable, and those which were the author's personal experience more or less he can certainly vouch for. He much appreciates the kindly recep tion from press and public which was so gen erously given to More Pennsylvania Moun tain Stories. That is another reason for the appearance of this book. In it, as in the previous volumes, the author strives to show the variety and scope of Penn sylvania folk-lore and tradition and through them hopes to give fresh vitality and in ferest to the localities where they occurred. There is no spot of ground a hundred feet square in the Pennsylvania mountains that has not its legend. Some are old, as ancient as the old, old forests. Others are of recent making or in formation now. Each one is different, each is full of its own local color. There are some stories in this book which con tain more human interest than folk-lore, but they are included in order to give romance to certain places where older legends have not been secured. Any story which relates to human beings will sooner or later become folk. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Pennsylvania Fireside Tales Volume 3

Download or read book Pennsylvania Fireside Tales Volume 3 written by Jeffrey R. Frazier and published by Pennsylvania Fireside Tales. This book was released on 2024-05-31 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is the author's opinion that it is not an exaggeration to say that if anyone wishes to experience one of those rare moments of true happiness that occurs in a lifetime, they should go to the maintains and search for a teller of the old tales. When sitting amidst the scenery that is woven into the heart and soul of the stories themselves, cares of this present hectic age seem to melt away, and the listener is indeed transported to another level - a finer "phase" of existence that everyone should be able to experience whenever they so desire. It has been this writer's privilege to feel a renewed optimism each time I've gone back to the hills, and that's the same "high" that I hope the reader gets when he peruses the stories preserved in my Pennsylvania Fireside Tales series. In the meantime I continue to explore Pennsylvania's mountains. It seems that they still call to me, and when they do, I must go. And that's because it's from those mountaintops that I sometimes feel that I can almost touch the "roof" of Pennsylvania, which in turn inspires me to collect still more of those old-time tales that calm the spirit but also which fire the imagination to the point where fact and romance seem one and the same.

Book excerpt: From the 1890s through the 1920s, the postcard was an extraordinarily popular means of communication, and many of the postcards produced during this "golden age" can today be considered works of art. Postcard photographers traveled the length and breadth of the nation snapping photographs of busy street scenes, documenting local landmarks, and assembling crowds of friends and families only too happy to pose for a picture. These images, printed as postcards and sold in general stores across the country, survive as telling reminders of an important era in America's history. This fascinating new history of Pennsylvania's Endless Mountains showcases more than two hundred of the best vintage postcards available.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Antoine Dutot opened the Kittatinny Hotel&—the first tourist hotel in the Poconos&—in 1829, little did he know that he was a pioneer in what would become one of the largest and most diverse tourist and recreation areas on the East Coast. Although his initial venture failed, the tourist industry of the Poconos has been a long-term success, evolving and adapting to change. Better in the Poconos tells the story of Pennsylvania&’s premier vacationland from its earliest days to the present. The flourishing tourist and resort industry in the Poconos can be attributed, in part, to the area&’s splendid mountains, streams, and forests. But the timeless appeal of nature was matched, and even surpassed, by the resorts&’ ability to redefine themselves. In the mid-nineteenth century, William Cullen Bryant depicted the Pocono region as a hunter&’s delight, describing abundant game and sublime landscapes. The Victorian era, however, brought genteel carriage rides and croquet; later, specialized ethnic resorts catered to the minority populations of Philadelphia and New York; and in the 1940s and 1950s, the Poconos earned its reputation as a honeymoon paradise. This evolution continues today: the land of romance has given way to the ski resorts and water slides enjoyed by today&’s vacationing families. Poconos resort owners and innkeepers have long recognized the cutthroat competition inherent in the vacation business. Early on, they realized that they were vying not only with each other but also with other resorts&—first in the Catskills and on the New Jersey shore, and then in Florida, in the Caribbean, and even in Europe. Better in the Poconos illustrates the strategies by which resorts in northeastern Pennsylvania responded to these market forces. They were compelled to provide superior service and amenities as well as novel amusements and activities for their guests. In the latter half of the twentieth century, for example, &"super-resorts&" started to supplant the old hotels: the new resorts could offer year-round activities, thanks to the invention of artificial snow. Similarly, honeymoon hotels declined as couples resorts&—retreats that boasted such innovations as the heart-shaped bathtub and the Jacuzzi in the shape of a tall champagne glass&—emerged on the Poconos scene. Better in the Poconos recreates that scene and the people who brought it to life&—not only the innkeepers, souvenir sellers, laborers, and service workers, but also the community leaders and visionaries who promoted the vacation economy and sought to guide it. The proper Victorians, the devoted sportsmen, the young newlyweds, the families and singles, the staid ladies of the Women&’s Christian Temperance Union (and the sinners whose vices they wished to temper), the members of the Ku Klux Klan, the rich Quakers, the Jewish socialists, and the immigrants&—all these, and more, make up the humanly rich mosaic of the Poconos.
