Book excerpt: Pennsylvania German calligraphy book, possibly from southeastern Pennsylvania, dated 1759 by Jacob Stapfer, and 1771 by another owner-scrivener, Jacob Wetzel. The notebook contains examples of Pennsylvania German "Fraktur" writing exercises or "Vorschrift", typically consisting of a Scripture or hymn verse illuminated in two or three sizes of letters, beginning with one large and extremely ornate letter; another, often lengthy, hymn in German cursive script; and alphabets of capital and small letters, and numerals. Stapfer and Wetzel, whose names appear on the inside front wrapper, may have been the scriveners--usually country parochial schoolteachers--or the recipients of the exercises, which were often prepared as teachers' rewards and farewell gifts to pupils.
