Book Wellington s History of the Peninsular War

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An historic account of the Peninsula War written by the man leading forces against the French, Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington. Though pressed many times to write about his battles and campaigns, the Duke of Wellington always replied that people should refer to his published dispatches. Yet Wellington did, in effect, write a history of the Peninsular War in the form of four lengthy memoranda, summarizing the conduct of the war in 1809, 1810, and 1811 respectively. These lengthy accounts demonstrate Wellington’s unmatched appreciation of the nature of the war in Spain and Portugal, and relate to the operations of the French and Spanish forces as well as the Anglo-Portuguese army under his command. Unlike personal diaries or journals written by individual soldiers, with their inevitably limited knowledge, Wellington was in an unparalleled position to provide a comprehensive overview of the war. Equally, the memoranda were written as the war unfolded, not tainted with the knowledge of hindsight, providing a unique contemporaneous commentary. Brought together by renowned historian Stuart Reid with reports and key dispatches from the other years of the campaign, the result is the story of the Peninsular War told through the writings of the man who knew and understood the conflict in Iberia better than any other. These memoranda and dispatches have never been published before in a single connected narrative. Therefore, Wellington’s History of the Peninsular War 1808-1814 offers a uniquely accessible perspective on the conflict in the own words of Britain’s greatest general.

Download or read book A History of the Peninsular War written by Charles Oman and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1807-1814 war in the lberian Peninsula was one of the most significant and influential campaigns of the Napoleonic Wars. Arising from Napoleon's strategic necessity to impose his rule over Portugal and Spain, it evolved into a constant drain on his resources, Sir Charles Oman's seven volume history of the campaign is an unrivalled and essential work. His extensive use and analysis of French, Spanish, Portuguese and British participants' accounts and archival material, together with his own inspection of the battlefields, provides a comprehensive and balanced account of this most important episode in Napoleonic military history. Volume III covers the period from September 1809 to December 1810, when the French were consolidating their hold on Spain, crushing resistance and attempting to drive the British out of Portugal. However, they could not wholly defeat their opponents.

Book excerpt: Accounts of battle and daring under the 'Iron Duke' The author of this book, Edward Fraser, specialised in histories concerning the soldiers and sailors of the Napoleonic Age. Originally titled, in the style of its day, Soldiers Whom Wellington Led, this volume contains almost twenty vignettes-some describing personalities and events that may not be familiar to modern readers-about the soldiers of all ranks who were Wellington's 'old peninsular army which could go anywhere and do anything.' Included are 'The Charge of the Light Dragoons at Talavera' and 'The Men Who Took the Eagle at Barrosa' and other accounts of the battlefield and campaign, together with essays on some notable figures who served under Wellington's command including his chief scout Colquhoun Grant, Colonel John Waters another remarkable gatherer of intelligence and the exploits of Ensign Dyas. Leonaur also publish Fraser's excellent history on the fortunes of Napoleon's famous eagle standards, The War Drama of the Eagles, a companion book to this present volume Nelson's Sailors and an unusual account of the Battle of Trafalgar from the perspective of the French and Spanish naval forces The Enemy at Trafalgar. All are excellent 'readers' for students of the Napoleonic Wars. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

Book History Of The War In The Peninsular And In The South Of France From The Year 1807 To The Year 1814

Download or read book History Of The War In The Peninsular And In The South Of France From The Year 1807 To The Year 1814 written by General William Francis Patrick Napier K.C.B. and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2011-06-06 with total page 737 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Napier, was born in Dublin in 1785, one of a number of brothers who entered the British army and excelled in the service although it is his History of the War in the Peninsular that he is most remembered for. A masteful, epic account of the Spanish Ulcer that drained Napoleon's resources and played a pivotal role in the end of his domination of Europe. Napier gained his first commission as an ensign in the Royal Irish Artillery in 1800. By the time of the Napoleonic Wars he had transferred to to the 52nd Regiment, which was being trained as light infantry at Shorncliffe under Sir John Moore. Napier saw his first service in the Peninsular with the 43rd Foot under Sir John Moore during the Corunna campaign. Napier would go on to be conspicuous in the actions of the Light Division, such as the epic march to Talavera, the battles of Fuentes d’Oñoro, Salamanca, Nivelle, Orthes and Toulouse. He left the service a General and Knight Commander of the Order of Bath. In this first volume (1807 to beginning of 1809), Napier surveys the scene in mainland Europe and particularly Spain and Portugal, the rotten state of politics in Spain, the isolation of Portugal as the only ally of Great Britain still not under Napoleon’s domination. He starts with the machinations of the French to supplant the Bourbon regime in Spain and the joint Franco-Spanish invasion of Portugal with its flood of French troops supposed friends soon to be enemies. The initial disastrous campaigns of the splintered Spanish armies are written of in great detail, battles such as Rio Seco and Ucles, and the parlous state of the Spanish government are shown in all their infamy, juxtaposed to the second defence of Sarragossa by the valorous Spaniards. Wellington’s first short-lived campaign in Portugal, including the battle of Vimiero is given due attention and much is lavished on the campaign of Sir John Moore. A Classic, deserves to be read and re-read.

Book Wellington s Army 1809 1814 Illustrated Edition

Download or read book Wellington s Army 1809 1814 Illustrated Edition written by Sir Charles William Chadwick Oman KBE and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 734 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes over 100 maps of the actions, engagements and battles of the entire Peninsular War. Whilst writing his magisterial The History of The Peninsular War, Sir Charles Oman gathered material that was to become Wellington’s Army. Into Wellington’s Army he gathered, as he says in his Preface, “much miscellaneous information which does not bear upon the actual chronicle of events in the various campaigns that lie between 1808 and 1814, but yet possesses high interest in itself, and throws many a side-light on the general course of the war ... these notes relate either to the personal characteristics of that famous old army of Wellington, which, as he himself said, ‘could go anywhere and do anything,’ or to its inner mechanism — the details of its management. I purport to speak in these pages of the leaders and the led; of the daily life, manners, and customs of the Peninsular Army, as much as of its composition and its organization. I shall be dealing with the rank and file no less than with the officers, and must even find space for a few pages on that curious and polyglot horde of camp followers which trailed at the heels of the army, and frequently raised problems which worried not only colonels and adjutants, but even the Great Duke himself.”
