The book begins by charting the history of the Orang Asli under British colonial rule followed by the community’s experiences under the Malaysian government, in an attempt to provide a deeper understanding of the economic and social complexities facing the Orang Asli today. Based on extensive original research, the book goes on to discuss the interesting changes taking place among urban Orang Asli migrants with regards to gender dynamics, while exploring the unique ways in which these urban indigenous migrants maintain close links with their home communities in the rural spaces of Peninsular Malaysia. Book excerpt: The history of modern Chinese schools in Peninsular Malaysia is a story of conflicts between Chinese domiciled there and different governments that happened or happen to rule the land. Before the days of the Pacific War, the British found the Chinese schools troublesome because of their pro-China political activities. They established measures to control them. When the Japanese ruled the Malay Peninsula, they closed down all the Chinese schools. After the Pacific War, for a decade, the British sought to convert the Chinese schools into English schools. The Chinese schools decoupled themselves from China and survived. A Malay-dominated government of independent Peninsular Malaysia allowed Chinese primary schools to continue, but finally changed many Chinese secondary schools into National Type Secondary Schools using Malay as the main medium of instruction. Those that remained independent, along with Chinese colleges, continued without government assistance. The Chinese community today continues to safeguard its educational institutions to ensure they survive.

The aroid flora of Peninsular Malaysia comprises 28 genera and ca 140 indigenous (of which17 provisionally accepted) with 25 species (ca 17%) endemic. Peninsular Malaysia has no endemic aroid genera. As compared to Thailand with 29 genera, ca 200 species of which 62 species (ca 30%) are endemic, and Borneo where 38 genera (of which are 10 endemic), and currently 670 indigenous species of which more than 40% are undescribed and about 95% are endemic. However, from time to time, many new species were found and described. These include two species of frog from genus Limnonectes (L. utara and L. selatan) and two species of frog from genus Amolops (A. gerutu and A.australis). From these findings, it showed that our forests are very rich with amphibian species. More potential areas, especially the upland systems need to be explored and studied extensively. Attention also needs to be given to cryptic species complex, which may consist of more than one species. This book is written to reveal and distribute the information on amphibian fauna of Bukit Larut Forest Reserve, Perak; the most popular biodiversity hotspot in Peninsular Malaysia. The information is based on our long-term study and survey of this area, starting in 2000–2018. Currently, 55 species of amphibians from seven families were recorded to inhabit Bukit Larut Forest Reserve. These include five species of bufonids, 10 dicroglossids, six megophrys, nine microhylids, 12 ranids, 11 rhacophorids and two ichthyopiids. The book also discusses the altitudinal range of the frog species which can be encountered at the lower part (< 300 m a.s.l.), upper part (> 900 m a.s.l.) and both lower and upper parts of Bukit Larut. This book also includes plentiful photos of amphibians which were photographed, mostly in their natural environments. It also includes the latest nomenclature, morphology, colouration and size, natural history, location and distribution of each frog species.
