Book Reading Transatlantic Girlhood in the Long Nineteenth Century

Download or read book Reading Transatlantic Girlhood in the Long Nineteenth Century written by Robin L. Cadwallader and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-05-13 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection is the first of its kind to interrogate both literal and metaphorical transatlantic exchanges of culture and ideas in nineteenth-century girls’ fiction. As such, it initiates conversations about how the motif of travel in literature taught nineteenth-century girl audiences to reexamine their own cultural biases by offering a fresh perspective on literature that is often studied primarily within a national context. Women and children in nineteenth-century America are often described as being tied to the home and the domestic sphere, but this collection challenges this categorization and shows that girls in particular were often expected to go abroad and to learn new cultural frames in order to enter the realm of adulthood; those who could not afford to go abroad literally could do so through the stories that traveled to them from other lands or the stories they read of others’ travels. Via transatlantic exchange, then, authors, readers, and the characters in the texts covered in this collection confront the idea of what constitutes the self. Books examined in this volume include Adeline Trafton’s An American Girl Abroad (1872), Johanna Spyri’s Heidi (1881), and Elizabeth W. Champney’s eleven-book Vassar Girl Series (1883-92), among others.

Book excerpt: Many Catholics today feel that the Church and its leaders are out of touch with the real world. Issues such as annulment, birth control, ordination for women, celibacy for priests, and homosexuality have divided and marginalized many of the faithful. With subsequent numbers of lapsed Catholics on the rise and the American clergy aging with fewer priests to take their place. Catholic scholar and teacher Penny Ryan is justly concerned with the future of Catholicism. Citing many historical precedents that have shaped the Church's teachings over the centuries, Ryan calls for a reexamination of what it means to be Catholic in the modern world. She brings attention to the plight of devoted Catholic women who feel called to the priesthood but are denied access, to couples compelled to turn to more reliable birth control methods than those allowed by the Church, and to gay Catholics struggling to reconcile their personal and spiritual lives with current official Church teachings.

Book Penelope Voyages

  • Author : Karen R. Lawrence
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press
  • Release : 2018-08-06
  • ISBN : 1501732498

Download or read book Penelope Voyages written by Karen R. Lawrence and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looking at travel writing by British women from the seventeenth century on, Karen R. Lawrence asks an intriguing question: What happens when, instead of waiting patiently for Odysseus, Penelope voyages and records her journey—when the woman who is expected to waitsets forth herself and traces an itinerary of her own? Lawrence ranges widely, discussing both fiction and nonfiction and traversing the genres of travel letters, realistic and sentimental novels, ethnography, fantasy, and postmodern narrative. In examining works as dissimilar as Margaret Cavendish's rendition of the Renaissance adventure narrative and Christine Brooke-Rose's postmodernist Between, she explores not only the significance of gender for travel writing, but also the value of travel itself for testing the limits of women's social freedoms and restraints. Lawrence shows how writings by Frances Burney, Mary Wollstonecraft, Sarah Lee, Mary Kingsley, Virginia Woolf, and Brigid Brophy reconceive the meanings of femininity in relation to such apparent oppositions as travel/home, other/self, and foreign/domestic. Despite the differences-historical, generic, political-among these writers, Lawrence maintains, they share common insights. Their accounts overturn the dichotomy between adventure and domesticity, demonstrating something illusory within both the stability of home and the freedom of travel.

Marymount girls are good girls. Even if they weren't, no one would know, because girls like Clay Collins keep their mouths shut. Not that Clay has anything to share, anyway. Always in control, she owns the hallways, walking tall on Monday and then dropping to her knees like the good Catholic girl she is on Sunday. What she wants she has to hide. Liv Jaeger crosses the tracks every day for one reason: to graduate from high school and get into the Ivy League. But Clay—with her beautiful skin, clean shoes, and rich parents—torments her daily and thinks Liv won't fight back. At least not until Liv gets Clay alone and finds out she's hiding so much more than just what's underneath those pretty clothes. Liv told Clay to stay on her side of town. But one night, Clay doesn't listen. And once Liv is done with her, she'll never be a good girl again.
