After her best friend—a slave—was sold to another family to keep the girls from being so close, she knew that she could never abide living with slavery. Determined to make it on her own, she is one of two unmarried women in her wagon train from Independence, Missouri to Oregon Territory. From their first day on the trail, Herbert Jensen has his eye on the beautiful Miss Brainerd. He watches her as she manages to weather the hardships of life on the trail after being a privileged debutante from the South. Helping where he can, he hopes she’ll eventually see him as more than just a fellow traveler. When he changes her broken wagon wheel, he sees an opportunity to speak to her and get to know her. Will he be able to convince her that she is meant to be his wife? Or will they both continue their journey alone?

Book The Vagina A Literary and Cultural History

Download or read book The Vagina A Literary and Cultural History written by Emma L. E. Rees and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2013-08-01 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From South Park to Kathy Acker, and from Lars Von Trier to Sex and the City, women's sexual organs are demonized. Rees traces the fascinating evolution of this demonization, considering how calling the ‘c-word' obscene both legitimates and perpetuates the fractured identities of women globally. Rees demonstrates how writers, artists, and filmmakers contend with the dilemma of the vagina's puzzlingly ‘covert visibility'. In our postmodern, porn-obsessed culture, vaginas appear to be everywhere, literally or symbolically but, crucially, they are as silenced as they are objectified. The Vagina: A Literary and Cultural History examines the paradox of female genitalia through five fields of artistic expression: literature, film, TV, visual, and performance art. There is a peculiar paradox – unlike any other – regarding female genitalia. Rees focuses on this paradox of what is termed the ‘covert visibility' of the vagina and on its monstrous manifestations. That is, what happens when the female body refuses to be pathologized, eroticized, or rendered subordinate to the will or intention of another? Common, and often offensive, slang terms for the vagina can be seen as an attempt to divert attention away from the reality of women's lived sexual experiences such that we don't ‘look' at the vagina itself – slang offers a convenient distraction to something so taboo. The Vagina: A Literary and Cultural History is an important contribution to the ongoing debate in understanding the feminine identity

Book Penelope s Renown

Download or read book Penelope s Renown written by Marylin A. Katz and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Noted for her contradictory words and actions, Penelope has been a problematic character for critics of the Odyssey, many of whom turn to psychological explanations to account for her behavior. In a fresh approach to the problem, Marylin Katz links Penelope closely with the strategies that govern the overall design of the narrative. By examining its apparent inconsistencies and its deferral of truth and closure, she shows how Penelope represents the indeterminacy that is characteristic of the narrative as a whole. Katz argues that the controlling narrative device of the poem is the paradigm of Agamemnon's fateful return from the Trojan War, narrated in the opening lines of the Odyssey. This story operates not only as a point of reference for Odysseus' homecoming but also as an alternative plot, and the danger that Penelope will betray Odysseus as Clytemnestra did Agamemnon is kept alive throughout the first half of the poem. Once Odysseus reaches Ithaca, however, the paradigm of Helen's faithlessness substitutes for that of Clytemnestra. The narrative structure of the Odyssey is thus based upon an intratextual revision of its own paradigm, through which the surface meaning of Penelope's words and actions is undermined though never openly discredited. The book details models that vision specialists working with the rehabilitation team can use to achieve the best success for the patient in rehabilitation; vision rehabilitation concepts and the science from which they have been developed; examples of therapeutic exercises; practice management information for the post-brain injury vision rehabilitation practice; and information on the legal process in which one frequently becomes involved in this type of work. He'll let me walk away. But I have to earn every single one. By submitting to the darkest, cruelest, and most beautiful man I've ever known. "5 dark ★★★★★s! Pearl clearly has gone through hell and more... this story is so breathtaking !!!! I am awed by her defiance, gallantry, and great fortitude! As far as Crow is concerned, under his savageness, there are shreds of compassion and humanity" -Goodreads Reviewer "Haunting, disturbing, emotionally tormenting and oh so dark! I loved Pearl's strength and bravery. I got lost in Crow's complexity and fell in love with the man behind the mask. Being a fan of the dark, this definitely ticked all the right boxes for me." -Goodreads Reviewer "I read A LOT of books and this series will always be my favorite. Crow and Pearl. I fell in love with both of them. Penelope Sky knows how to develop her characters and does it very well. The story never gets boring. This would make a great mini-series for television!" -Amazon Reviewer "Good golly, Miss Molly! At first, I was apprehensive about reading this book, but ... it is truly a work of art. When I find a book that's this good I end up staying awake till 4 in the morning because I just can't put it away till my hubby makes me. This book makes you a little stronger and gives worth to the reason why you should never stop fighting for yourself. I would recommend it to anyone." -Amazon Reviewer Trigger Warning: Not for the faint of heart.
