Book African American Life in South Carolina s Upper Piedmont 1780 1900

Download or read book African American Life in South Carolina s Upper Piedmont 1780 1900 written by W. J. Megginson and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2022-08-03 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rich portrait of Black life in South Carolina's Upstate Encyclopedic in scope, yet intimate in detail, African American Life in South Carolina's Upper Piedmont, 1780–1900, delves into the richness of community life in a setting where Black residents were relatively few, notably disadvantaged, but remarkably cohesive. W. J. Megginson shifts the conventional study of African Americans in South Carolina from the much-examined Lowcountry to a part of the state that offered a quite different existence for people of color. In Anderson, Oconee, and Pickens counties—occupying the state's northwest corner—he finds an independent, brave, and stable subculture that persevered for more than a century in the face of political and economic inequities. Drawing on little-used state and county denominational records, privately held research materials, and sources available only in local repositories, Megginson brings to life African American society before, during, and after the Civil War. Orville Vernon Burton, Judge Matthew J. Perry Jr. Distinguished Professor of History at Clemson University and University Distinguished Teacher/Scholar Emeritus at the University of Illinois, provides a new foreword.

Book Franklin County Georgia Tax Digest 1798 1807 Volume 1

Download or read book Franklin County Georgia Tax Digest 1798 1807 Volume 1 written by Martha Acker and published by Southern Historical Press. This book was released on 2024-05-20 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By: Martha Acker, Pub. 1980, 300 pages, Index, Hard cover, ISBN #978-1-63914-226-2. Franklin County was created in 1784 and was considered the 8th county of the state. It is located in the northeastern portion of the state boarding South Carolina along the Savannah River. Early on, Franklin County boarded Wilkes and Greene Counties, Georgia and Pendleton District/County, South Carolina. Franklin County is the parent county in part or whole to: Banks, Barrow, Clarke, Hart, Jackson, Madison, Oconee, and Stephens. Tax Digest can be one of the most valuable tools available to researchers. When used carefully along with deeds and other legal records, one can construct a rather tight framework around an inhabitant of a given area. They are particularly useful in differentiating between person with identical names in the same area, and in pinpointing the time of their coming and going. Important relationships between persons listed in a tax digest can often be established. Considering that Franklin County has lost its 1790, 1800 and 1810 census, these tax digests help bridge that gap in placing a person in a specific time, city or tax district. Information that can be gleaned from these records: name of owner, name of executor or guardian, name of adjoining land owners, number of acres, number of dwellings, value of property, city located in or name of closest creek or river, number of slaves and sometimes giving slaves name, indication of out of state ownership or a resident, or whether it is a poll tax for a person claiming no property and whether the tax payer is a defaulter or not. The index for this book has approximately 15,000 entries plus a place name index.

Book Texas Rangers Ranchers and Realtors

Download or read book Texas Rangers Ranchers and Realtors written by Thomas O. McDonald and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2021-03-25 with total page 639 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A native Georgian, James Hughes Callahan (1812–1856) migrated to Texas to serve in the Texas Revolution in exchange for land. In Seguin, Texas, where he settled, he met and married a divorcée, Sarah Medissa Day (1822–1856). The lives of these two Texas pioneers and their extended family would become so entwined in the events and experiences of the nascent nation and state that their story represents a social history of nineteenth-century Texas. From his arrival as a sergeant with the Georgia Battalion, through the ill-fated 1855 expedition that bears his name, to his shooting death in a feud with a neighbor, Callahan was a soldier, a Texas Ranger, a rancher, and a land developer, at every turn making his mark on the evolving Guadalupe River Basin. Separately, Sarah’s family’s journey reflected the experience of many immigrants to Texas after its war of independence. Thomas O. McDonald traces the pair’s respective paths to their meeting, then follows as, together, they contend with conflict, troublesome social mores, the emergence of new industries, and the taming of the land, along the way helping to shape the Texas culture we know today. With a sharp eye for character and detail, and with a wealth of material at his command, author Thomas O. McDonald tells a story as crackling with life as it is steeped in scholarly research. In these pages the lives of the Callahan and Day families become a canvas on which the history of Texas—from revolution, frontier defense, and Indian wars to Anglo settlement and emerging legal and social systems—dramatically, inexorably unfolds.
