  • Author : Semir Zeki
  • Publisher : OUP Oxford
  • Release : 2006-02-23
  • ISBN : 0191589438
  • Pages : 296 pages

Download or read book Law and the Brain written by Semir Zeki and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2006-02-23 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past 20 years have seen unparalleled advances in neurobiology, with findings from neuroscience being used to shed light on a range of human activities - many historically the province of those in the humanities and social sciences - aesthetics, emotion, consciousness, music. Applying this new knowledge to law seems a natural development - the making, considering, and enforcing of law of course rests on mental processes. However, where some of those activities can be studied with a certain amount of academic detachment, what we discover about the brain has considerable implications for how we consider and judge those who follow or indeed flout the law - with inevitable social and political consequences. There are real issues that the legal system will face as neurobiological studies continue to relentlessly probe the human mind - the motives for our actions, our decision making processes, and such issues as free will and responsibility. This volume represents a first serious attempt to address questions of law as reflecting brain activity, emphasizing that it is the organization and functioning of the brain that determines how we enact and obey laws. It applies the most recent developments in brain science to debates over criminal responsibility, cooperation and punishment, deception, moral and legal judgment, property, evolutionary psychology, law and economics, and decision-making by judges and juries. Written and edited by leading specialists from a range of disciplines, the book presents a groundbreaking and challenging new look at human behaviour.

Book Designing the School Curriculum

Download or read book Designing the School Curriculum written by Peter S. Hlebowitsh and published by Allyn & Bacon. This book was released on 2005 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Designing the School Curriculum" takes a practical, step-by-step approach, giving students the thorough grounding in the process that leads to confident and effective practitioners. The author emphasizes the discretionary judgment of the individual teacher and acknowledges that the curriculum design process is completed only in the unique and spontaneous learning exchanges between students and teachers. Practical ideas on the formation of school purposes, the design of school-wide experiences, effective implementation, and the creation of responsive evaluative mechanisms help students to fulfill the goal of the textto design an authentic and effective curriculum. After an introductory chapter examining the role of the teacher in the design process and two brisk chapters leading students through the theoretical foundations of curriculum development, the text launches into the curriculum design process, giving a close look to each element. Hlebowitsh makes a valuable contribution to the field with this new text, offering a contemporary treatment of classic curriculum design theory and, most importantly, equipping students to engage in effective curriculum design themselves. Book The School of the Future Now

Download or read book The School of the Future Now written by John Galen Saylor and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conference provided the medium within which the views and recommendations of outstanding authorities among teachers, administrators, and college personnel could be formulated and disseminated to the profession concerning what kinds of schools this nation needs for the education of children from two to adulthood. In the first speech, Richard L. Foster analyzes institutional structures, program and curriculum patterns, teaching methods, and human relationships that militate against the full measure of individual development that should characterize the schools. Milly Cowles pictures the kinds of schooling needed for infants; Charles A. Blackman, for later childhood; Donald H. Eichhorn, for the emerging adolescent; and Mark Shedd, for the adolescent and young adult. Jack R. Frymier puts it all together for a total program of education for tomorrow -- ages two to young adulthood. William M. Alexander discusses ways in which school systems should work with their individual communities to bring about the schools of the future and details the processes that will involve all concerned persons in the community in the development of the kinds of schools needed now. Book Redesigning Management Education and Research

Download or read book Redesigning Management Education and Research written by Stéphanie Dameron and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Management education and research has evolved over the last few decades and scholars continue to debate the methodologies employed and the value of the output to the real world. This book offers a systematic critical analysis of this evolution. The contributing authors argue that a sort of a bubble formed in the world of business schools: intense competition among schools boosted the field but it also gave rise to rankings and a race for publication as a way to build reputation and access funding. As a result, less attention has been paid to important questions about the quality of teaching, the fit of the content taught to the needs of firms and the societies at large in various parts of the world, and to scholarly debates about management itself. This book is a wake-up call from European management scholars. They offer stimulating and challenging views to redesigning the foundations, institutional settings and contents of management education and research. The results will appeal to the field around the world. Teachers and researchers in all areas of business will find this volume illuminating. It offers an ambitious but practical plan aimed squarely at remaking management education and research in order to be relevant to the needs of the twenty first century.

Book Philosophy and the Novel

Download or read book Philosophy and the Novel written by Alan H. Goldman and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2013-04-05 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alan H. Goldman presents an original and lucid account of the relationship between philosophy and the novel. In the first part, on philosophy of novels, he defends theories of literary value and interpretation. Literary value, the value of literary works as such, is a species of aesthetic value. Goldman argues that works have aesthetic value when they simultaneously engage all our mental capacities: perceptual, cognitive, imaginative, and emotional. This view contrasts with now prevalent narrower formalist views of literary value. According to it, cognitive engagement with novels includes appreciation of their broad themes and the theses these imply, often moral and hence philosophical theses, which are therefore part of the novels' literary value. Interpretation explains elements of works so as to allow readers maximum appreciation, so as to maximize the literary value of the texts as written. Once more, Goldman's view contrasts with narrower views of literary interpretation, especially those which limit it to uncovering what authors intended. One implication of Goldman's broader view is the possibility of incompatible but equally acceptable interpretations, which he explores through a discussion of rival interpretations of Ernest Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises. Goldman goes on to test the theory of value by explaining the immense appeal of good mystery novels in its terms. The second part of the book, on philosophy in novels, explores themes relating to moral agency—moral development, motivation, and disintegration—in Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn, John Irving's The Cider House Rules, and Joseph Conrad's Nostromo. By narrating the course of characters' lives, including their inner lives, over extended periods, these novels allow us to vicariously experience the characters' moral progressions, positive and negative, to learn in a more focused way moral truths, as we do from real life experiences.
