Book Profiting the Crown

Download or read book Profiting the Crown written by Matthew J. Bellamy and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2005 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crown corporations are widely regarded as a Canadian invention. Since 1841 they have been dexterously implemented and hotly debated as instruments of public policy. However the failures of a number of state-run enterprises in the twentieth century have led a majority of Canadians to conclude that government has no place in the boardrooms of the nation. Matthew Bellamy's comprehensive account of Polymer's rise and evolution contradicts this widely held position and brings to light the accomplishments of one of Canada's pioneering crown corporations.

Book George and Emily Eden

Download or read book George and Emily Eden written by Brigid Allen and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2024-01-01 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George and Emily Eden were a devoted sibling pair. Both unmarried, they were accepted as a mildly unconventional couple by friends in the dynastically conscious governing class. George (1784-1849) entered politics as a Whig to replace his elder brother, who had been groomed for success but drowned in the Thames off Westminster one January night in 1810. Four years later George inherited his father’s peerage as 2nd Baron Auckland. In 1835 he was appointed Governor-General of India, and Emily (1797-1869), although reluctant to leave her close friend, the Prime Minister Lord Melbourne, went with him. A witty and perceptive writer, who later published a distinctively voiced pair of novels, Emily chronicled the Indian period, as she did her entire adult life, in letters. Allen traces the development of her closeness to George, their interlocking private and public lives and the events that impacted on them, including the Afghan disaster of January 1842 and the mixture of blame and forbearance that George attracted at home. A poignant coda describes Emily’s final twenty years as Victorian invalid, author, and observer of the political scene.

She decides the best thing to do is attempt to claw back the lost years of her youth, where it was a decade ago, on a Greek island full of women. Easy enough, right? Join Gabbi on her adventures and the often awkward situations she finds herself in. She questions everything including her sanity in her quest to find normality in this life. She confides in two things: her best friend James and her diary. “It's what, gone 1pm and I've only just managed to escape. From where exactly? I'm not sure, some house somewhere several streets away in a maze... One minute I'm riding through town squeezed between two women on a motorbike, and the next I'm being served breakfast in bed, complete with flowers fresh from the garden on the tray, and kisses on the forehead like we were lovers on a Valentine’s getaway... “Shoot me.”

Book excerpt: My life is different now. I don't go to work. I don't have an office. I stay at home, hide behind curtains and make notes. I wait for something to happen.' Gordon Kingdom struggles with the fate of his seriously-ill wife while patiently observing and methodically recording the lives of those around him: his neighbours. He has files on them all, including Don Donald (best friend and petty thief), Annie Carnaffan (lives next door, throws footballs over the fence), and Benny (the boy who paints with his eyes closed). Then there's Angelica, the new girl (42) on the street, with her multi-coloured toenails and her filthy temper. It's when she arrives that Gordon's world of half-truths really begins to unravel. Faced with a series of unexpected events and a faltering conscience, he's left with an impossible decision. Because in the banality of everyday life, what would you do if the unthinkable happened?
