Book excerpt: With a vista of 2,000 square miles across the Cumberland Valley, Pen Mar sits in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains at an elevation of 1,400 feet. It was this breathtaking view that inspired the president of the Western Maryland Railway, Col. John Mifflin Hood, to establish Pen Mar Park, which opened on August 31, 1877. The park served as a magnet for visitors, and soon magnificent hotels and boarding houses appeared, making the area one of the most popular resorts in the East. Railways brought hundreds of thousands of tourists until the rise of the automobile, when people found their way to Pen Mar by cars and buses.

Download or read book Western Maryland Railway The written by Anthony Puzzilla and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2015 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Take a nonstop journey through 131 years of the Western Maryland Railway's history in this photographic tale. The Western Maryland Railway was never a large Class 1 rail carrier, but during its 131 colorful years of existence, it provided extremely fast, efficient, and reliable freight; coal-hauling; and passenger service in the states it served. This book contains images from the history of this remarkable railroad and also provides the reader the opportunity to see how the legacy of the Western Maryland Railway is being maintained and remembered even today at some of its well-known train stations, such as in Cumberland and Union Bridge, Maryland, now home to the Western Maryland Railway Historical Society (WMRHS). The Western Maryland is now gone, but through the wonderful images captured and preserved by the WMRHS and private archival photograph collections, the dream of the railway will live on.

Book excerpt: Nestled between the Tuscarora and Blue Ridge Mountains is the center of the Cumberland Valley, an area settled by men and women who crossed the Susquehanna River and built their log cabins in the wilderness. These early settlers were hardy souls who confronted the hardships and struggles of Native American raids, the American Revolution, and the Civil War. In the 1800s, the iron industry sprang up in the small villages of Roxbury, Edenville, and Mont Alto, and academies and colleges were founded. The late Victorian resorts of Pen Mar, Monterey, and Buena Vista drew visitors to the valley. Today, within the mountain-protected borders of "Mother Cumberland," are the towns of Chambersburg, Mercersburg, Waynesboro, Greencastle, St. Thomas, and other small communities each with a rich history of its own.
