They are known in particular for their elegant and technically advanced tower designs. These are usually characterized by taut, seamless envelopes without exposed profiles – their visual structure is achieved by subtly staggered forms or variations in the color or materiality of the façade glazing. A model-making workshop within the offi ce helps to fi nd the appropriate form. Many projects also fulfi l urbanistic roles: They create urban spaces or act as iconic landmarks within the city fabric. The publication encompasses a selection of works from the past eight years. Book excerpt: "Pelli focuses on the unique position of architecture among the arts. He analyzes eight "connections" that influence both the artistic and practical aspects of architecture: time, construction, place, purpose, culture, design process, constituency, and oneself. Pelli discusses each connection, drawing on historic and contemporary examples, and then turns to first-person commentary, illustrating his experiences with his own buildings and projects, including such important buildings as Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (the world's tallest buildings), the Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles, and Washington National Airport."--Jacket.

Book Individual to Collective

Download or read book Individual to Collective written by Duda/Paine Architects and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the conceptual framework of five overlapping themes, readers will consider the following issues: Choreographed Experience. Just as globalization and cultural conformity make the uniqueness of place more essential, so too does our virtual connectedness call for a physical counterweight. The work of Duda/Paine Architects explores how visual, auditory, and tactile perception anchors an individual's physical experience and intellectual understanding of his or her surroundings. Like storytellers, choreographers, and directors, they design meaningful sequences of movement and discovery that add layers of sensory information, giving personal meaning to the architectural experience. Creating Context. Duda/Paine Architects often adapt urban strategies to suburban and edge city settings, creating destinations with a strong sense of place - even in the absence of an existing architectural context of neighboring buildings, sidewalks, and open spaces. Each of these projects uses multiple buildings to strike a balance between built form and open space; each contrasts man-made gardens with the natural landscape; and each looks at the physical qualities of its site and surroundings to inspire an appropriate architectural language. Transformations. Progressive leaders in business, healthcare, and education often aspire to cross disciplinary boundaries, collaborate more effectively, and innovate more freely. Architecture, like alchemy can effect transformation. Duda/Paine's interactive and inclusive design process not only reflects their clients' strategic visions but can also act as a catalyst to help redefine how they live, work, play or learn. The projects in this section establish new paradigms by bringing people together in ways that stimulate fresh ideas and practices. Skyline/Streetscape. A majority of the world's population now lives in cities for the first time, making the tower typology more crucial than ever. Towers make public gestures in the skyline and the streetscape, acting at the scale of the city as well as the more intimate scale of the human body. Whether seen from a distance or experienced close-up, these projects become landmarks in the city skyline while simultaneously responding to the characteristics of the existing urban fabric and amplifying the vibrancy of its' street life. Public Rooms. The benefits of today's virtual connectedness and increased mobility cannot replace the importance of physical gathering places where we share experiences, build collective memories, and see ourselves as part of a larger community. The privatization that leads to suburban sprawl and gated communities reinforces the architect's civic duty to provide public spaces that counteract this tendency. Whether urban or suburban, indoors or out, Duda Paine's public rooms nurture civic life by encouraging social interaction through chance encounters and casual conversations.

Book ARO Architecture Research Office

Download or read book ARO Architecture Research Office written by Stephen Cassell and published by Princeton Architectural Press. This book was released on 2003-02-28 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The process of investigation, analysis, and testing makes Architecture Research Office (ARO) as much a laboratory as a design firm. For Stephen Cassell, Adam Yarinsky, and their team, the starting point of each commission is not the development of an abstract "idea" for the project, but an intensive, hands-on occupation with a project's conditions, with its physical, economic, and social contexts. This practical approach to making architecture, to shrinking the distance between thinking and building, is much evident in their work, which manages to be simultaneously thoughtful and sensual." "The seven projects featured in this, the first monograph on the work of this firm, range from self-directed research (ARO's paper wall project), to private living spaces (the SoHo Loft), to commercial interiors (the Qiora Store and Spa), to the popular U.S. Armed Services Recruiting Station in Times Square, to the stunning Colorado House in Telluride. All of these projects challenge design conventions, while delighting the senses with their unusual materials, careful detailing, and unexpected spatial discoveries." "With essays by Stan Allen, Philip Nobel, Guy Nordenson, and Sarah Whiting."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved
