When he meets Kalea Coe, the daughter of a local hotel manager, she tells him the strange tale of Pele, the mysterious volcano goddess. From then on, back luck seems to follow Ian and his family like a shadow. First, Ian pinches his finger; then his father scrapes his hand on a rock in a koi pond. His new stepmother loses an earring. Ian finds out that Kalea's great-grandmother fears Pele--and for good reason: Kalea's father, the hotel manager, accidentally unleashed Pele's wrath on his grandmother when he stole Pele's lava rocks to make his luau pit. Hoping that an offering will end the back luck, Ian and Kalea work out a daring plan to return Pele's rocks to the volcano. Will they be able to appease the goddess of fire before she consumes them in a fiery lava flow?

Book excerpt: Of all the gods of ancient Hawai'i, only Pele, the volcano goddess, still lives in the hearts of many Hawaiian and even non-Hawaiian residents of the islands. To some, she is a powerful and very real presence, especially in the Volcano region of the Big Island. To believers, this is her present home after having resided during past ages on other islands in the Hawaiian chain. To many in Hawai'i she is the subject of colorful legends with which to beguile wide-eyed visitors. To a geologist, her story is seen as the ancient Hawaiian's way of explaining the unknown natural forces that periodically devastated the land with lava flows or put on spectacular fiery displays of what must have seemed supernatural powers. But to all who live in the Hawaiian Islands-believer or cynic-Pele is an aspect of the Hawai'i of old that is constantly alive.Learn more about this fiery deity through the legends; the descriptions documented by exploring naturalists; accounts by missionaries, travelers, and scientists; her encounters with Hawaiian ali'i; and the awe-inspiring eruptions that continue to this day.

Book Selections from Hawaiian Legends of Volcanoes

Download or read book Selections from Hawaiian Legends of Volcanoes written by William Westervelt and published by . This book was released on 2016-08-01 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Hawaiian Legends of Volcanoes was first published in 1916, William Drake Westervelt introduced stories of the volcano goddess Pele to an English speaking audience. His timeless storytelling is combined with full color and block print artwork by Dietrich Varez to create a stunning picture of Pelehonuamea; Pele of the sacred land.Pele's voyage to find a new home echoes a cultural history of migration. She is accompanied by her family, including her shark-god brother, Kämohoali'i and her youngest, most beloved sister, Hi'iakaikapoliopele. Conflicts with her sisters and rivals -- Namakaokaha'i, the sea goddess, and Poli'ahu, the snow goddess -- offer explanations for natural events framed in glorious battles. Kamapua'a, her demi-god lover and rival, features prominently in stories displaying her explosive jealousy. Interspersed in the doings of gods are Pele's encounters with mortals, who often emerge the worse for the experience.Republication of this iconic work celebrates the 100th anniversary of its original printing, as well as the concurrent centennial celebrations of the United States National Park Service and the creation of Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. Of Westervelt's original book, only the legends are included in this volume. The text, orthography and scientific names reflect the original publication, and no changes have been made to Westervelt's prose. This timeless collection preserves many of the best loved tales of Pele - her adventures, her family and her volcanic home - and presents them for a new generation to embrace.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Westerners—from early missionaries to explorers to present-day artists, scientists, and tourists—have always found volcanoes fascinating and disturbing. Native Hawaiians, in contrast, revere volcanoes as a source of spiritual energy and see the volcano goddess Pele as part of the natural cycle of a continuously procreative cosmos. Volcanoes hold a special place in our curiosity about nature. The Burning Island is an intimate, multilayered portrait of the Hawaiian volcano region—a land marked by a precarious tension between the harsh reality of constant geologic change, respect for mythological traditions, and the pressures of economic exploitation. Pamela Frierson treks up Mauna Loa, the world’s largest active volcano, and Kilauea to explore how volcanoes work, as well as how their powerful and destructive forces reshape land, cultures, and history. Her adventures reveal surprising archeological ruins, threatened rainforest ecosystems, and questionable real estate development of the islands. Now a classic of nature writing, Frierson’s narrative sets the stage for a larger exploration of our need to take great care in respecting and preserving nature and tradition while balancing our ever-expanding sense of discovery and use of the land.
