Download or read book Mermaid A Memoir of Resilience written by Eileen Cronin and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2014-01-20 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Extraordinarily courageous; [Cronin] chronicles her journey to fit in and thrive with bravery and wit." —O, The Oprah Magazine At the age of three, Eileen Cronin first realized that only she did not have legs. Her boisterous Catholic family accepted her situation as “God’s will,” treating her no differently than her ten siblings, as she “squiddled” through their 1960s Cincinnati home. But starting school, even wearing prosthetics, Cronin had to brave bullying and embarrassing questions. Thanks to her older brother’s coaching, she handled a classmate’s playground taunts with a smack from her lunchbox. As a teen, thrilled when boys asked her out, she was confused about what sexuality meant for her. She felt most comfortable and happiest relaxing and skinny dipping with her girlfriends, imagining herself “an elusive mermaid.” The cause of her disability remained taboo, however, even as she looked toward the future and the possibility of her own family. In later years, as her mother battled mental illness and denied having taken the drug thalidomide—known to cause birth defects—Cronin felt apart from her family. After the death of a close brother, she turned to alcohol. Eventually, however, she found the strength to set out on her own, volunteering at hospitals and earning a PhD in clinical psychology. Reflecting with humor and grace on her youth, search for love, and quest for answers, Cronin spins a shimmering story of self-discovery and transformation.
Download or read book The Drydock and the Mermaid written by Thomas F. Kistner and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2001-01-12 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jack Starling, a young American, has been in Copenhagen for four months and washes dishes at Divan I, an upscale restaurant in Tivoli Gardens. He has no work permit and his job is technically illegal but no one seems to care that much and he needs the work since he has moved in with his girl friend, Tove Svensen, with whom he is in love, and has no intention of leaving the city. They are a loving couple and incredibly happy. They make no plans for the future but neither wants this wonderful time together to end. Along the way Jack strikes up a friendship with the most interesting, urbane, articulate, sophisticated, intellectual person he has ever met. Pete Sorensen is a drunk and part time psychotic but at one time was a biblical scholar of repute, a full professor of Asian Studies at Copenhagen University and during the war, now 16 years past, the leader of the most feared anti Nazi resistance group in all of Denmark, The Vipers. Jacks military background as an intelligence operative in the Far East becomes known to Inspector Magnus Johansen, Director of the Copenhagen office of the International Police. He has Jack picked up by the local police for washing dishes without a permit and brought to his office across the street from Tivoli Gardens. Jack has no idea Magnus was a young member of the Vipers and at that time a devout follower of Pete Sorensen. In return for maintaining and even intensifying his relationship with Sorensen, who manages to hold down a customer service job at a prestigious international bank in Copenhagen, between stays at the asylum, Magnus offers our hero a real job at a nearby shipyard as a ships rigger in the biggest drydock in Northern Europe. You mean you want me to spy on him, says Jack, not too happy with the proposition. Something like that, smiles Johansen. Jack takes the job, after all it will double his income, and goes to work for Aksel Holmgren who manages the drydock and crew of ten very experienced riggers. He assimilates very well and quickly learns the art of rigging from, as his mates were fond of saying, the very best scaffold hangers on the face of the earth. He is happy and likes the work a great deal. It is not long before he finds out that Aksel was also a member of the Vipers working under their leader Pete Sorensen. He learns that a raid on a Nazi munitions plant in June, 1944 went very badly and all the Vipers, save three, were mowed down by well placed German machine guns. They were obviously betrayed. Pete, Aksel and Magnus escaped miraculously by swimming across the harbor and vanishing into the city. It has always been obvious, to anyone knowing the entire story, that one of these three is a Quisling, a rat, an informer. But which one? Sixteen years have gone by and they have each led productive lives, discounting Sorensens stays in the asylum, of course. No signs of regret or remorse....that were visible in any event. Magnus is hoping Pete will reveal something to Jack during one of their drinking sessions at Johns bar. Aksel wonders why Magnus prevailed on him to hire the inexperienced American who knows nothing about rigging and speaks no Danish. Pete questions Jacks judgement in shacking up with a shop clerk with a small farming background. You can certainly do better, my boy! As the story unfolds Jack is drawn deeper and deeper into this dangerous morass of deceit and camouflaged reality involving car bombs, giant trolls and a hangmans noose.

Download or read book A History of Evil in Popular Culture written by Sharon Packer MD and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 874 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evil isn't simply an abstract theological or philosophical talking point. In our society, the idea of evil feeds entertainment, manifests in all sorts of media, and is a root concept in our collective psyche. This accessible and appealing book examines what evil means to us. Evil has been with us since the Garden of Eden, when Eve unleashed evil by biting the apple. Outside of theology, evil remains a highly relevant concept in contemporary times: evil villains in films and literature make these stories entertaining; our criminal justice system decides the fate of convicted criminals based on the determination of their status as "evil" or "insane." This book examines the many manifestations of "evil" in modern media, making it clear how this idea pervades nearly all aspects of life and helping us to reconsider some of the notions about evil that pop culture perpetuates and promotes. Covering screen media such as film, television, and video games; print media that include novels and poetry; visual media like art and comics; music; and political polemics, the essays in this book address an eclectic range of topics. The diverse authors include Americans who left the United States during the Vietnam War era, conservative Christian political pundits, rock musicians, classical linguists, Disney fans, scholars of American slavery, and experts on Holocaust literature and films. From portrayals of evil in the television shows The Wire and 24 to the violent lyrics of the rap duo Insane Clown Posse to the storylines of the Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter books, readers will find themselves rethinking what evil is—and how they came to hold their beliefs.
Download or read book America Toons In written by David Perlmutter and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-03-13 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animation has been part of television since the start of the medium but it has rarely received unbiased recognition from media scholars. More often, it has been ridiculed for supposedly poor technical quality, accused of trafficking in violence aimed at children, and neglected for indulging in vulgar behavior. These accusations are often made categorically, out of prejudice or ignorance, with little attempt to understand the importance of each program on its own terms. This book takes a serious look at the whole genre of television animation, from the early themes and practices through the evolution of the art to the present day. Examining the productions of individual studios and producers, the author establishes a means of understanding their work in new ways, at the same time discussing the ways in which the genre has often been unfairly marginalized by critics, and how, especially in recent years, producers have both challenged and embraced this "marginality" as a vital part of their work. By taking seriously something often thought to be frivolous, the book provides a framework for understanding the persistent presence of television animation in the American media--and how surprisingly influential it has been.

Download or read book The Animated Film Encyclopedia written by Graham Webb and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animated films often bring to mind images of Saturday morning cartoons on television, but at one time, animated films, both long and short, were found mostly on the silver screen as part of the featured program. In 1977, George Lucas even specially requested a cartoon to open Star Wars-"Duck Dodgers and the 241⁄2 Century," featuring Daffy Duck. In its rich history, cinematic animation has developed from silent monochrome images to sound-filled shorts that ran with newsreels and adventure serials-to animation sequences used to enliven commercials or live-action films-and finally to feature films like Fantasia and Cinderella. This encyclopedia covers all English language animation from the crucial first eighty years of its history. From the popular to the obscure, from Bugs to Mickey, from the short to the feature, nearly 7,000 items are covered. Each entry includes production information, date, running time, and a synopsis. Much of the information compiled here is rare. For example, character voices once considered "anonymous" are here identified, and animated films now lost because they were once considered expendable are here given the attention they deserve. A complete index allows multiple points of access.
