Search over large datasets has always been a key problem in peer-to-peer systems and the peer-to-peer paradigm has incited novel directions in the field of data management. This resulted in many novel peer-to-peer data management concepts and algorithms, for supporting data management tasks in a wider sense, including data integration, document management and text retrieval. The lecture covers four different types of peer-to-peer data management systems that are characterized by the type of data they manage and the search capabilities they support. The first type are structured peer-to-peer data management systems which support structured query capabilities for standard data models. The second type are peer-to-peer data integration systems for querying of heterogeneous databases without requiring a common global schema. The third type are peer-to-peer document retrieval systems that enable document search based both on the textual content and the document structure. Finally, we introduce semantic overlay networks, which support similarity search on information represented in hierarchically organized and multi-dimensional semantic spaces. Topics that go beyond data representation and search are summarized at the end of the lecture. Book excerpt: First International Conference on Data Management in Grid and Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Systems, Globe 2008 Data management can be achieved by different types of systems: from centralized file management systems to grid and P2P systems passing through distributed systems, par- lel systems, and data integration systems. An increase in the demand of data sharing from different sources accessible through networks has led to proposals for virtual data in- gration approach. The aim of data integration systems, based on the mediator-wrapper architecture, is to provide uniform access to multiple distributed, autonomous and h- erogeneous data sources. Heterogeneity may occur at various levels (e. g. , different ha- ware platforms, operating systems, DBMS). For more than ten years, research topics such as grid and P2P systems have been very active and their synergy has been pointed out. They are important for scale d- tributed systems and applications that require effective management of voluminous, distributed, and heterogeneous data. This importance comes out of characteristics offered by these systems (e. g. , autonomy and the dynamicity of nodes, decentralized control for scaling). Today, the grid and P2P systems intended initially for intensive computing and file sharing are open to the management of voluminous, heteroge- ous, and distributed data in a large-scale environment.

We can beam this information anywhere, to mobile workers, to field engineers, to a track loading apples, to ships crossing the Oceans, to web surfers. We have reached a point where the promise of information access anywhere and anytime is close to realization. The enabling technology, wireless networks, exists; what remains to be achieved is providing the infrastructure and the software to support the promise. Universal access and management of information has been one of the driving forces in the evolution of computer technology. Central computing gave the ability to perform large and complex computations and advanced information manipulation. Advances in networking connected computers together and led to distributed computing. Web technology and the Internet went even further to provide hyper-linked information access and global computing. However, restricting access stations to physical location limits the boundary of the vision.

Thus, they are well suited for large-scale data sharing in distributed environments. Most of the existing P2P approaches for data sharing rely on either structured networks (e.g., DHTs) for efficient indexing, or unstructured networks for ease of deployment, or some combination. However, these approaches have some limitations, such as lack of freedom for data placement in DHTs, and high latency and high network traffic in unstructured networks. To address these limitations, gossip protocols which are easy to deploy and scale well, can be exploited. In this book, we will give an overview of these different P2P techniques and architectures, discuss their trade-offs, and illustrate their use for decentralizing several large-scale data sharing applications. Book excerpt: This thesis describes the implementation of a prototype for a P2P database management system. This implementation established a master application laid up on local database with main user interface and four sub applications: network manager, acquaintance manager, rule generating manager, query processing manager. We are interested in the creation of Peer-to-Peer (hereafter P2P) systems that consist of autonomous databases coordinated by event-condition-action (ECA) rules. Such systems could be used for the exchange of information among peers who don't need (or want) wholesale integration of their respective databases. Conversely, the hospital database may automatically get medical data on a patient who has just been admitted. This prototype has been tested with hundreds of queries among four peers. The rule processing time increases depending on the number of peer communications contained. We analyze the performance and characteristics of this prototype through a series of experiments.

Book excerpt: Being the de-facto standard for data representation and exchange over the Web, XML (Extensible Markup Language) allows the easy development of applications that exchange data over the Web. This creates a set of data management requirements involving XML. XML and related standards have been extensively applied in many business, service, and multimedia applications. As a result, a large volume of data is managed today directly in XML format. With the wide and in-depth utilization of XML in diverse application domains, some particularities of data management in concrete applications emerge, which challenge current XML technology. This is very similar with the situation that some database models and special database systems have been developed so that databases can satisfy the need of managing diverse data well. In data- and knowledge- intensive application systems, one of the challenges can be generalized as the need to handle imprecise and uncertain information in XML data management by applying fuzzy logic, probability, and more generally soft computing. Currently, two kinds of situations are roughly identified in soft computing for XML data management: applying soft computing for the intelligent processing of classical XML data; applying soft computing for the representation and processing of imprecise and uncertain XML data. For the former, soft computing can be used for flexible query of XML document as well as XML data mining, XML duplicate detection, and so on.

Book excerpt: Peer-to-peer (P2P) computing is attracting enormous media attention, spurred by the popularity of file sharing systems such as Napster, Gnutella, and Morpheus. The peers are autonomous, or as some call them, first-class citizens. P2P networks are emerging as a new distributed computing paradigm for their potential to harness the computing power of the hosts composing the network and make their under-utilized resources available to others. Although researchers working on distributed computing, multiagent systems, databases and networks have been using similar concepts for a long time, it is only recently that papers motivated by the current P2P paradigm have started appearing in high-quality conferences and workshops. Research in agent systems in particular appears to be most relevant because, since their inception, multiagent systems have always been thought of as networks of peers. The multiagent paradigm can thus be superimposed on the P2P architecture, where agents embody the description of the task environments, the decision-support capabilities, the collective behavior, and the interaction protocols of each peer. The emphasis in this context on decentralization, user autonomy, ease and speed of growth that gives P2P its advantages also leads to significant potential problems. Most prominent among these problems are coordination, the ability of an agent to make decisions on its own actions in the context of activities of other agents, and scalability, the value of the P2P systems lies in how well they scale along several dimensions, including complexity, heterogeneity of peers, robustness, traffic redistribution, and so on. Book excerpt: In terms of querying, we propose a framework in which users pose select-project-join queries with respect to the schema of their local peer. Then, we provide a rewriting mechanism that uses mapping tables to translate a locally expressed query to a set of queries over the acquainted peers. We consider both sound translations (which only retrieve correct answers) and complete translations (which retrieve all correct answers, and no incorrect answers). We describe basic algorithms to compute such translations, and we offer optimized versions of these algorithms that offer savings both in terms of execution time and in terms of memory. Finally, we present experiments that show the performance and efficiency of our algorithms under various settings. In this thesis, we investigate mechanisms to support data sharing and querying in a peer-to-peer data management system, that is, a peer-to-peer system where each peer manages its own data. To support data sharing, we propose the use of mapping tables which list pairs of corresponding data values that reside in different peers. We argue why mapping tables are appropriate for data sharing in a peer-to-peer environment, and we discuss alternative semantics for these tables. We motivate why reasoning capabilities are needed to manage mapping tables, and we show the importance of inferring new tables from existing ones, or checking the consistency of existing tables. Finally, we present algorithms and experimental results which show that mapping tables may be managed efficiently in practice.
