Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peeps Into Persia If you desire consort, do not travel to Teheran! There is only one way to do the journey, and that is as quickly as possible. But barring discomforts, it is a journey of intense interest, and I hope that some account of it, of the lives Europeans used to lead in Teheran, and of the life there now, may not be without interest. I have spent much of the past six years in Teheran, and have done the long journey half a dozen times, always taking the route through Russia, across the Caspian Sea to Enzeli, to end with that most uncomfortable thing, a Persian drive of about two hundred and fifty miles. Book Across Persia Classic Reprint

Download or read book Across Persia Classic Reprint written by E. Crawshay Williams and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Across Persia A Man who loves this world of Nature and of men comes often to be possessed by a restless longing merely to study it, - to spend his time as a spectator of the great play of life; only to live and see and learn and know and feel. And so to travel; to become a citizen of the world, and to have the freedom of its seas and forests and sandy deserts and seething streets; to spend life contemplating its manifold aspects and learning its countless secrets. It is irresistibly attractive, this Travel-hunger: yet it has a somewhat selfish end, in most cases. No one save the traveller is a whit the better for a life of travel, if to travel be the only object. The artist loves his life-work, and the world is the richer for it; the poet, the musician, the author, the politician, all these at the same time satisfy their interests and benefit mankind; but the traveller, - with him the satisfaction of desire is barren of result except to one single individual in all this busy world. Cannot he, then, join his fellow-mortals in letting mankind find itself something the better for his pursuits? If he travels intelligently he certainly can, in two ways. He can apply the knowledge he has gained to the profit of his fellow-men, and he can describe his experiences for their amusement. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of Persia The uniformed natives of these countries, whose condi tion is much to be deplored, are not aware that the great Samuel Johnson has said, that Whatever raises the past, the distant, and the future, above the present, exalts us in the dignity of human beings which is an unanswerably' good reason for the preference given to mummies over every living object, however fascinating. The rage of the present day for mummies and other delectable reliques of antiquity has deluged Egypt with itinerant men of science and research, who have quite ex hansted that land of wonders and those who have lately visited it have been reduced, from actual want of other aliment, to the necessity of preying upon their predecessors, many of whom have been cruelly mangled, and some Wholly devoured. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The King and Cobbler: A Romance of Ancient Persia Among all the cities of old, the ruins of which are now left to tell of the mighty age that has long since passed away, none exceeded in extent, in wealth, or in grandeur, Persepolis, the chief capital of ancient Persia. At the foot of a steep, rugged mountain, was extended a wide plain, watered by a goodly river. Upon all hands this plain was shut in by high cliffs of rock, looming darkly in the distance, leaving the level space some five-and-twenty miles in length, and upon this was the city built, occupying the whole vast area. The wealth of the royal palace almost exceeds belief. It was a vast structure, serving not only for the royal residence, but also for a citadel and bulwark. Its colonnade of massive pillars still stands, and is a fit object of wonder. These pillars are of gray marble and seventy feet high, and their capitals, which are of an order of architecture differing from any other then in use, are beautiful in the extreme. The interior of this kingly abode was literally cased with gold and precious stones, and to count or estimate the wealth there displayed, were a task beyond the ability of one man. And then other evidences of grandeur were built in the city, and upon all hands were to be seen sculptures and towers, and courts and monuments. And as though the vast plain gave not room enough for the ingenuity of the sculptors, the faces of the very rocks that formed the cliff wall of the city were cut and carved in a most elaborate and finished manner. Into the facts of the larger rocks were cut tombs and sepulchral chambers, with beautiful porticos richly sculptured from the solid cliff. Truly the king of Persia had wealth, for his capital contained within itself the wealth of a nation. And he had power, for thousands on thousands bowed down to do him homage, and princes and potentates acknowledged his authority. Next in importance among the palaces of Persepolis to that of the king was the palace of Rustem, one of the most powerful satraps, or governors, of the realm. Rustem was now past the meridian of life, but still strong and vigorous, and fond of all those manly sports which were the delight of the warrior race of that period. He was a favorite of the king, a friend to those who bowed to him, and sometimes generous and benevolent to the poor. He could be warm and ardent in his attachments, and he could love with his whole heart; but there was no principle, no moral obligation, felt by him. He was the slave of impulse, and the owner of a will that would not bend. Very slight causes would attract his friendship, and causes just as slight would arouse his anger and hate. Above all things else did he love to be honored and obeyed and flattered. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Persia's Golden Days It was a bright, dry, radiant morning full of the promise of a scorching afternoon. In the city of Madain, one of Persia's many capitals, when the House of Sassan ruled over the great empire of Iran, people had but little leisure on this morning of mornings to think much about the weather. The busy hum of the bazaar was hushed for once. The main street, where the palaces of the late king, Khusroo I., of his son, the reigning king, Hormuz, of Bahram Choobeen, the great captain of Persia's hosts, and of many another great noble - that street was deserted and empty, for King Hormuz was in his divan, or hall of justice, sitting in judgment upon no ordinary prisoner. Look well at the defendant as he passes into the hall of justice, for he is the king's son. In years to come his generals will expel the Romans from Asia and Africa. Book Mary Bird in Persia Classic Reprint

Download or read book Mary Bird in Persia Classic Reprint written by Clara C. Rice and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mary Bird in Persia All who had the privilege of knowing Mary Bird intimately, and of being her fellow workers in the great cause of foreign Missions, will rejoice that this memoir is being given to the public. The story of her life and labours can hardly fail to be an inspiration to those who read it. One could not see much of her without realizing the Presence of the Master to Whose service all her time and her talents were consecrated. And now that she has gone to be with Him in a higher sphere of service, it is well that this book should go forth on its mission as a call to others to follow the King with the same whole-hearted devotion with which she followed Him. It would have been a loss to the Church of Christ if no such record had been written. Not indeed that it would be possible or desirable for many workers, either at home or abroad, to attempt to mould their lives upon hers in detail. Few, if any, could with advantage follow her example in ignoring the claims of the body to a reasonable measure of recreation, food, and sleep. It was a marvel to those who watched her self-denying labours that she lived so long. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It is always difficult to get a caravan away in good time from quarters where they have been comfortably settled for a few days. We had the honour of a cavalry escort, who performed some respectable feats of equitation, such as firing at a mark while in full gallop, dismounting and remounting at the same pace, firing under the horse's neck while lying hidden along his side, and so on.
