Download or read book Peeps at Many Lands England Classic Reprint written by John Finnemore and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peeps at Many Lands; England London is the greatest city in the world. How easy it is to say that or read it How very, very hard it is to get the least idea of what it means 1 We may talk of millions of people, of thousands of streets, of hundreds of thousands of houses, but words will give us little grasp of what London means. And if we go to see for ourselves, we may travel up and down its highways and byways until we are dizzy with the rush of its hurrying crowds, its streams of close-packed vehicles, its rows upon rows of houses, shops, banks, churches, museums, halls, theatres, and begin to think that at last we have seen London. But alas for our fancy! We find that all the time we have only been in one small corner of it, and the great city spreads far and wide around the district we have learned to know, just as a sea spreads around an islet on its broad surface. When we read or hear of London, we are always coming across the terms West End and East End. West and East of what? Where is the dividing - line? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peeps at Many Lands France France and England lie closely together, facing each other, not only across the famous Straits of Dover, but on either Side of that long stretch of sea which we call the English Channel, and our French neighbours call La Manche (the Sleeve), because of its shape. We know that those who live near each other often have many dealings together, either in friendship or enmity, and this is very true of England and France. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peeps at Many Lands: Scotland A little boy was once asked to write an essay on Scotland, and he began by saying Scotland is the smallest half of England. I Should not wonder if this sentence lost a mark for him, yet I think we can all understand what he meant by it. He knew that England and Scotland are parts of the same island, and that nowadays they form one Kingdom, inhabited by the same people, who Speak the same language, have the same Parliament, and obey the same King; and that, when we cross the Border and go from Scotland into England, or from England into Scotland, we do not need to get out of the train and have our boxes opened and searched for certain things that are not allowed to be carried from one country to another unless a tax is paid on them, as is done when travellers go from France into Germany, or from Italy into France. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peeps at Many Lands: Japan F AR away from our land, on the other side of the world, lies a group of islands which form the kingdom of 'japan. The word Japan means the Land of the Rising Sun, and it is certainly a good name for a country of the Far East, the land of sunrise. The ag of Japan, too, is painted with a rising sun which 'sheds its beams on every hand, and this ag is now for ever famous, so great and wonderful have been the victories in which it has been borne triumphant over Russian arms. In some ways the Japanese are fond of comparing themselves with their English friends and allies. They point out that Japan is a cluster of islands o the coast of Asia, as Britain is a cluster of islands of? The coast of Europe. They have proved themselves, like the English, brave and clever on the sea, while their troops have fought as nobly as British soldiers on the land. Theyare fond of calling themselves the English of the East, and say that their land is the Britain of the Pacific. The rise of Japan in becoming one of the Great Powers of the world has been very sudden and wonder ful. Fifty years ago Japan lay hidden from the World she forbade strangers to visit the country, and very little was known of her people and her customs. Her navy then consisted of a few wooden junks; to-day she has a eet of splendid ironclads, handled by men who know their duties as well as English seamen. Her army consisted of troops armed with two swords and carrying bows and arrows to-day her troops are the admiration of the world, armed with the most modern weapons, and, as foes, to be dreaded by the most powerful nations. Fifty years ago Japan was in the purely feudal stage. Her great native Princes were called Daimios. Each had a strong castle and a private army of his own. There were ceaseless feuds between these Princes and constant fighting between their armies of samurai, as their followers were called. Japan was like England at the time of our War of the Roses: family quarrels were fought out in pitched battle. All that has now gone. The Daimios have become private gentlemen the armies of samurai have been disbanded, and Japan is ruled and managed just like a European country, with judges, and policemen, and law-courts, after the model of Western lands. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peeps at Many Lands: Norway Who has not heard of the Vikings - the dauntless sea-rovers, who in the days of long ago were the dread of Northern Europe? We English should know something of them, for Viking blood flowed In the veins of many of our ancestors. And these fierce fighting men came in their ships across the North Sea from Norway on more than one occasion to invade England. But they came once too often, and were thoroughly defeated at the Battle of Stamford Bridge, when, as will be remembered, Harald the Hard, King of Norway, was killed in attempting to turn his namesake, King Harold of England, off his throne. Norwegian historians, however, do not say very much about this particular invasion. They prefer to dwell on the great deeds of another King Harald, who was called "Fairhair," and who began his reign some two hundred years earlier. Patter, patter, patter, came the rain. Then great flashes of fire streaked the sky, and then came the boom, boom, boom! of the thunder. Book Peeps at Many Lands Belgium

Download or read book Peeps at Many Lands Belgium written by George W. T. Omond and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-11-22 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you leave the mouth of the Thames, or the white chalk cliffs at Dover, and sail over the water just where the English Channel meets the North Sea, you will in about three or four hours see before you a long expanse of yellow sand, and rising behind it a low ridge of sand hills, which look in the distance like a range of baby mountains. These sand hills are called "dunes." Here and there at intervals you will see a number of little towns, each town standing by itself on the shore, and separated from its neighbor by a row of dunes and a stretch of sand. This is your first view of the little country called Belgium, which is bounded on the east by Holland, and on the west by France. It is, from end to end, about half the size of Ireland. "Peeps at Many Lands: Belgium" is a travel book about the nation of Belgium, its geography, its people and their customs.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life in Many Lands, Vol. 1: Life in Other Homes Here is a wise and growing insistence to-day on the need for reality in the presentation of Geography to young children. The simple facts which are necessary for their knowledge and within their understanding must be shown to them as matters of actual truth, with all the interest and attractiveness which come from reality. Matters of fancy play their part, a most important part, in the education of the child but in the manner of their presentation, scrupulous care should be taken to avoid the confusion between fact and fancy which so often and so easily arises.
