Book Pedro the Cruel of Castile 1350 1369

Download or read book Pedro the Cruel of Castile 1350 1369 written by Estow and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-02-07 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work deals with the reign of Pedro I of Castile (1350-1369), known as “The Cruel,” one of the most notorious and misunderstood figures in the annals of peninsular history. This is the first book on the subject that analyzes Pedro's rule in light of social, political, diplomatic, and economic conditions in mid-14th century Castile. Using extant primary documentation from archival sources and the most recent findings of scholars from various fields, the book explores in detail the historical basis for Pedro's reputation and the extent to which this reputation unfairly rests on the testimony of Pero López de Ayala, the reign's principal chronicler. The book provides fresh insights into various aspects of Pedro's career, such as his political aims, relations with religious minorities, and fiscal policies.

Book The History of Peter the Cruel Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book The History of Peter the Cruel Vol 1 of 2 written by Prosper Merimee and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Peter the Cruel, Vol. 1 of 2: King of Castile and Leon The most interesting and circumstantial informa tion we possess concerning the reign of Don Pedro, has been transmitted to us by Pero Lopez dc Ayala. That illustrious chronicler, who was a contemporary of Don Pedro, and enabled, through birth and the im portant Omoce which he discharged, to Observe and study closely the events of his time, seems to have united all the qualities which render the testimony of an historian truly valuable, his naturally great powers of observation having been matured by actual ex perience in state affairs, and assisted by the cultivation of letters. Nevertheless, he has been accused by modern writers, not only of partiality, but even of dis honesty. I purpose endeavouring to show the injustice of this imputation. If I can prove the veracity of the author whom I have generally taken for my guide, I shall, perhaps, inspire some confidence in my own work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the middle of the fourteenth century, Christian control of the Iberian Peninsula extended to the borders of the emirate of Granada, whose Muslim rulers acknowledged Castilian suzerainty. No longer threatened by Moroccan incursions, the kings of Castile were diverted from completing the Reconquest by civil war and conflicts with neighboring Christian kings. Mindful, however, of their traditional goal of recovering lands formerly ruled by the Visigoths, whose heirs they claimed to be, the Castilian monarchs continued intermittently to assault Granada until the late fifteenth century. Matters changed thereafter, when Fernando and Isabel launched a decade-long effort to subjugate Granada. Utilizing artillery and expending vast sums of money, they methodically conquered each Naṣrid stronghold until the capitulation of the city of Granada itself in 1492. Effective military and naval organization and access to a diversity of financial resources, joined with papal crusading benefits, facilitated the final conquest. Throughout, the Naṣrids had emphasized the urgency of a jihād waged against the Christian infidels, while the Castilians affirmed that the expulsion of the "enemies of our Catholic faith" was a necessary, just, and holy cause. The fundamentally religious character of this last stage of conflict cannot be doubted, Joseph F. O'Callaghan argues.

Book Armies of Castile and Aragon 1370 1516

Download or read book Armies of Castile and Aragon 1370 1516 written by John Pohl and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-04-20 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most studies of medieval warfare in the late 14th and 15th centuries concentrate on the Hundred Years' War between England and France and the Wars of the Roses. But meanwhile, on the Iberian peninsula, the foundations of Spain's military 'Golden Age' were being laid as the kingdoms of Castile and Aragon under the Trastamara dynasty grew in power, ambition and success. Featuring spectacular full-colour artwork, and rare manuscript illustrations, this book depicts the fighting men whose skill and tactical flexibility made Spain into a world power at the close of the Middle Ages, carving out empires from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean.

Book excerpt: The first fully-fledged example of a revenge tragedy, the genre that became so influential in later Elizabethan and Jacobean drama, The Spanish Tragedy (1589) occupies a very special place in the history of English Renaissance drama. Hieronimo, Knight-Marshal of Spain during its war with Portugal, fails to obtain justice when his son is murdered for courting Bel-Imperia, the Duke of Castile's daughter, and decides to take justice into his own hands... This new student edition has been freshly revised by Professor Andrew Gurr to incorporate the latest stage history and critical interpretations of the play. It also appends the scenes that were added in 1602, discusses Elizabethan attitudes to revenge, the Senecan features of the play and the significance of the Anglo-Spanish conflict in the 1580s.
