Book excerpt: A number of years ago, I worked with a friend on a poetry board. He was a wonderful mentor, and during that time, I wrote the Pedro Story. With his encouragement I developed a love for children's stories and poetry. I found the combination helped to convey a story children loved to hear over and over. This book is a story of Pedros journey with Rosita. Rosita fills the emptiness of Pedro's heart, so they decided to bind their hearts and make it one. The awaited day has finally come. On the twenty-third day of September, they take their wedding vows as a couple. Let's check and see some of the things that would happen on their special day. Is this couple ready for their new journey?

Book The Mission Trip to San Pedro 2

Download or read book The Mission Trip to San Pedro 2 written by Gordon S. Jackson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-11-03 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Youth pastor Ken Barker’s theology doesn’t allow him to believe in omens. But his anxiety on the eve of leading First Church’s first week-long mission trip out of the country proves well-justified. Their travel agent, understandably confused by the names of two similar-sounding airports, sends him, a chaperone and nine youths to the wrong village. Their original destination is a village two hundred miles away, where they were to paint the local church and run a Vacation Bible School. Two churches (one evangelical, the other Catholic) in this second community are unprepared for these strangers but nevertheless take care of them. Ken cannot get a phone signal and let his pastor know where they are. Nor, because of local flooding, can they return to the airport to try and reach their original destination. Lacking any Spanish skills, the group is stranded and unequipped to do any meaningful ministry. Ken and his group increasingly realize how ill-prepared they are to do any good in San Pedro, practicing “parachute” mission work. The novel critiques and pokes fun at this approach, and how the aspiring helpers become “the helped.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays interrogates the most contested social, political, and aesthetic concept in Chicana/o cultural studies—resistance. If Chicana/o culture was born of resistance amid assimilation and nationalistic forces, how has it evolved into the twenty-first century? This groundbreaking volume redresses the central idea of resistance in Chicana/o visual cultural expression through nine clustered discussions, each coordinating scholarly, critical, curatorial, and historical contextualizations alongside artist statements and interviews. Landmark artistic works—illustrations, paintings, sculpture, photography, film, and television—anchor each section. Contributors include David Avalos, Mel Casas, Ester Hernández, Nicholas Herrera, Luis Jiménez, Ellen Landis, Yolanda López, Richard Lou, Delilah Montoya, Laura Pérez, Lourdes Portillo, Luis Tapia, Chuy Treviño, Willie Varela, Kathy Vargas, René Yañez, Yvonne Yarbro-Bejarano, and more. Cara a cara, face-to-face, encounters across the collection reveal the varied richness of resistant strategies, movidas, as they position crucial terms of debate surrounding resistance, including subversion, oppression, affirmation, and identification. The essays in the collection represent a wide array of perspectives on Chicana/o visual culture. Editors Scott L. Baugh and Víctor A. Sorell have curated a dialog among the many voices, creating an important new volume that redefines the role of resistance in Chicana/o visual arts and cultural expression.

Book Pierre s Journey to Florida

Download or read book Pierre s Journey to Florida written by Thomas N. Tozer and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-08-02 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historical fiction book is about the life adventures of Pierre de Bré, a young French Huguenot, at the time when European and Native Americans first came into contact with each other. His family and community were massacred by the Spanish and, as a consequence, he lived among the Timucuan Indians of Florida for several years before returning to France. It is a story of harsh times in Europe - a time with divisive, indeed tumultuous religious and political problems, and a time when exploration of the unknown parts of the world was so exciting, romantic, and adventurous. The book should be of interest to anyone fascinated by the original Native American culture or with a curiosity of the historic events leading to the settling of North America. The author’s motivation for writing this book came from four distinct sources: a visit to St. Augustine, Florida, where he became captivated with the early contribution of the French Huguenots to the founding of the United States; knowledge that Huguenot ancestors on his mother’s side came to the United States from France in the late 17th century; visiting most of the places in France and Florida mentioned in the book; and going to elementary and high school with numerous Native Americans.

Book How to Beat a Broken Game

Download or read book How to Beat a Broken Game written by Pedro Moura and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2022-03-29 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inside story of how the Dodgers won their first championship in more than thirty years—but helped cripple the sport of baseball in the process After years of frustrating playoff runs, the Los Angeles Dodgers finally reclaimed the World Series trophy after more than thirty years, led by star pitcher Clayton Kershaw, electric outfielder Mookie Betts, and a bevy of impressive young players assembled by team president Andrew Friedman. No team is better positioned to win now and in the future. Yet winning at modern baseball is nothing like it was even twenty years ago. In the years since the famous Moneyball revolution, baseball has grown to look less like a sport than a Wall Street firm that traded its boiler room for a field. Teams relentlessly chase every tiny advantage to win games and make money, even as it hurts fans, TV ratings, and players, courting bigger problems in the long run. This dramatic and insightful book takes you into the clubhouse with the championship players, as well as into the offices where teams constantly seek new ways to win—even when it hurts the game. How to Beat a Broken Game shows not only what it takes to win, but what it will take to save the sport.
