Book Business and Community in Medieval England

Download or read book Business and Community in Medieval England written by Catherine Casson and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2020-04-01 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important manuscripts surviving from thirteenth-century England, the corpus of documents known as the Hundred Rolls for Cambridge have been incomplete until the recent discovery of an additional roll. This invaluable volume replaces the previous inaccurate transcription by the record commission of 1818 and provides new translations and additional appendices. Shedding new light on important facets of business activity in thirteenth-century Cambridge, this volume makes a significant contribution to our knowledge of the early phases of capitalism. This unique text will be of interest to anyone working in the fields of economic and business history, entrepreneurship, philanthropy and medieval studies. A research monograph based on recently discovered historical documents, Compassionate Capitalism: Business and Community in Medieval England, by Casson et al, is also now available from Bristol University Press.

Book The Cartulary of Chatteris Abbey

Download or read book The Cartulary of Chatteris Abbey written by Chatteris Abbey and published by Boydell Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Takes its place as perhaps the finest available study of a house for women religious. ENGLISH HISTORICAL REVIEWThe fifteenth-century cartulary of the Benedictine nunnery of Chatteris Abbey in Cambridgeshire (founded in the early eleventh century) has important implications for the study of women religious, especially in the light of the small number of surviving cartularies from English nunneries, yet until now it has received little attention, perhaps due to its damage in the Cotton Library fire of 1731. This critical edition of the manuscript, which contains documents copied into it from the mid-twelfth to the fifteenth centuries, offers a full transcription, together with historical notes and apparatus. The introduction draws on the cartulary itself, as well as manorial and episcopal records, to analyse the nunnery's relationship with its patron, the bishop of Ely, and the development and management of its estates; it also examines the location and layout of the abbey, the social and geographical origins of the nuns, and the production and organisation of the cartulary. The edition is accompanied by an annotated list of all known abbesses, prioresses and nuns.CLAIRE BREAY/gained her Ph.D. at the Institute for Historical Research at the University of London; she is currently a curator of medieval manuscripts at the British Library.

Book Compassionate Capitalism

Download or read book Compassionate Capitalism written by Catherine Casson and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2020-04-01 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It may seem like a recent trend, but businesses have been practising compassionate capitalism for nearly a thousand years. Based on the newly discovered historical documents on Cambridge’s sophisticated urban property market during the Commercial Revolution in the thirteenth century, this book explores how successful entrepreneurs employed the wealth they had accumulated to the benefit of the community. Cutting across disciplines, from economic and business history to entrepreneurship, philanthropy and medieval studies, this outstanding volume presents an invaluable contribution to our knowledge of the early phases of capitalism. A companion book, The Cambridge Hundred Rolls Sources Volume, replacing the previous incomplete and inaccurate transcription by the Record Commission of 1818, is also available from Bristol University Press.

Download or read book Pedes Finium Or Fines Relating to the County of Cambridge Levied in the King s Court from the Seventh Year of Richard I to the End of the Reign of Richard III Classic Reprint written by Walter Rye and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pedes Finium, or Fines, Relating to the County of Cambridge, Levied in the King's Court From the Seventh Year of Richard I, to the End of the Reign of Richard III When I volunteered to pass through the press for the Cambridge Antiquarian Society a short Calendar of the Feet of Fines for their County, on the same lines as that I had printed for Norfolk, I thought I had a very easy task. The idea was suggested to me by seeing on the shelves of the Record Office a ms. Which purported to be a complete official calendar of the Fines for Cambridge, from Richard I. To Richard III. Not unnaturally I thought that a transcript of this could be made at a comparatively small expense, and that when it was put into type it could be read by me with the original docu ments and seen through the press at little trouble to myself or expense to the Society.
