Book excerpt: This collection brings together international teacher educators to employ a ‘long view’ of an historic and values-based dialectic in teacher education. The authors reflect how employing historical consciousness to look back can offer greater continuity to teachers’ moral and political values within their training. The book draws on research from experienced teacher educators representing different historical, social and political contexts in North America, Europe, Asia as well in post-conflict South Africa. Within each section, the authors reflect on the development of the moral and political values of pre-service and in-service teachers in an era of global neo-liberalism and how this is inextricably bound up with the narratives of professionals in the past within their own national context. Each chapter takes a ‘long view’ of the role of historical consciousness in informing the moral and political values of pre-service and in-service teachers, providing examples of how international teacher educators can collectively support one another in restoring a vibrant, values-based dialectic within the processes, pedagogies and provision of university and school-based training for which they are responsible. The ‘long view’ approach offers a compelling argument for the need to connect pre-service and in-service teachers’ values and narrative to the legacy of professionals of the past. Moral and Political Values in Teacher Education over Time will be of great interest to researchers, academics and students in teacher education, comparative education and the history of education. Book excerpt: This book traces the birth and evolution of the crèche in France, England, Germany, Russia and Italy from the mid-nineteenth century to the eve of the Second World War, in an attempt to understand from a transnational viewpoint the history of an institution for very young children that was very different from what we know today. These institutions had the two-fold goal of combatting the two phenomena that had for centuries characterised the history of infancy – infant mortality and the abandonment of babies. Drawing on a wealth of printed sources and in the light of the most recent and authoritative historical investigations, Dorena Caroli discusses the origins of the first crèche, established in Paris in 1844 by Firmin Marbeau, going on to compare and contrast the reception of the French model of care and assistance for babies and infants in a number of different European countries – England, Germany, Russia and Italy. This book fills a significant lacuna in the studies of infant history and the educational institutions designed for infants, providing a clear and broad picture not only of the practices followed but also of the evolution of “puericulture” and medical theories about very young children held in Europe in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It represents not only a valuable contribution to the history of these institutions but also a useful manual for students in the field of infant care.

Book excerpt: Giuseppina Pizzigoni (1870-1947) was a pioneer of the change in the vision of school education in Italy, and an autonomous interpreter of the impulse of transformation that lies at the origin of the progressive school, the active school, and the new school in Europe and the USA. In 1907, she conceived of the renewal of the Italian school, anticipating the structure of the comprehensive school and incorporating the nursery school with infants and children from 0 to 3 years of age. In 1911, she created the first Rinnovata Pizzigoni building, still standing today in Milan. The book explores the real evolution of the experimental method introduced in infant schools, and shows how the initial pedagogical idea can develop creatively, without being an imitation of a previous model.

I tradizionali manuali di storia della pedagogia, da questo punto di vista, segnano il passo, poiché concepiscono la storia educativa sostanzialmente come storia delle idee e del pensiero dei grandi Autori e Ideologi del passato, non tanto come storia di fatti ed eventi educativo-formativi che hanno segnato realmente i passaggi epocali della trasmissione dei saperi, delle pratiche, dell’identità stessa. Ma la ricerca contemporanea nasce ancora da quella storica, dove lo studio delle esperienze socio-educative fondamentali dell'uomo o la storia della mentalità formativa sono inevitabilmente fonte di esperienza per costruire o ricostruire le azioni formative del presente. A partire dalla modernità, gli orientamenti formativi ratificano un’esigenza percepita diffusamente, di responsabilità (umanesimo metodologico: Barocco, Scienza Nuova, Illuminismo) e di intenzionalità formative (umanesimo storico e dialettico: Romanticismo e movimenti dell’Ottocento e Primo Novecento), di valorizzazione delle potenzialità del singolo, che rifiuta le forme di omologazione e standardizzazione di pensiero e atteggiamenti che frammentano e impoveriscono la condizione esistenziale degli individui. Lanciando uno sguardo al futuro sulla base del passato la ricerca storico-educativa si conclude con la proposta di un framework dinamico dell’eco-identità inteso come contributo per elaborare un nuovo progetto di uomo per la formazione contemporanea.

Book excerpt: Although John Dewey's ideas have been of central interest in Anglo-Saxon philosophy and history of education, it is only recently that similar interest has developed in continental Europe. Deweyan philosophy of education has had to pass through national filters, which meant that it was received in national contexts of reform. The `German Dewey' was differently construed to the French, Italian, or English Dewey. This seems to change after 1989 (and the fall of socialist education) when interest in Dewey increased. The new political and philosophical interest in Dewey has to do with the lost alternative `socialism', and thus with the opening of Eastern Europe and the new problems of education within a worldwide community. This volume stresses two points. The original interest of European education in Dewey will be presented in case studies, concerning different national contexts and thus different Dewey's. What can be called the renewal of interest will be argued from different sides. It is our intention to show that today's interest in Dewey is not the remake of the reception within the different camps of progressive education. This volume will be of interest to philosophers of education, historians of education, and people engaged in the philosophy, history and the reception of Dewey.

This book presents a strong multidisciplinary perspective that can help clarify the problems about cultural traits.
