Book excerpt: “. . . the Kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking fine pearls.” 2 Corinthians 5:17b NIV My husband had passed away just 3 months earlier. The chaos and drama that usually follows had finally settled: the house was unusually quiet while my spirit remained stirred. I’d spent quite a bit of time in reflective prayer, unsure of what even to ask of God, but knowing He was somehow divinely connected to my unsettledness. Where were these random thoughts of writing coming from? Besides, what would I even say? Moreover, would anyone care enough to listen? It didn’t take long to receive confirmation. The instruction was just that, leaving no room for doubt or misunderstanding: I’m invited to write. Being as transparent as possible, I’m living proof God can use anybody to do His Kingdom work. You and I don’t have to wait until we feel equipped or we’ve got our act together in order to respond to God’s call. We simply need to be willing to take the first step. Here I am, starting year three, not necessarily an “accomplished” writer, but definitely a writer who has learned far more than she could ever put in print, ever share with others . . . a writer who realizes all God wants is her humble, amendable heart: He’ll step in and do the rest. Several heavenly pearls have dropped in my lap throughout this newfound journey: It’s God’s story; I’m not the main character. I’m simply invited to play a role in His story. Feelings are fickle; they come and go. Don’t trust them. Faith is only faith when action follows. Yet, it’s faith that empowers and perseveres. God calls me to “bigger-than-Kim” tasks so I get out of the way and He can say and do what He needs to say and do through me. This way, He gets full credit and all the glory. I cannot share what I don’t possess. My spiritual authenticity grows the quieter I’d become and the closer I draw near to God’s heart. I will never do life perfectly. I make mistakes but my response to my mistakes reflects my level of humility before God and others. When you and I allow God to step in and take over the reins of our life, He opens our eyes to both His presence and power working in, through, and around us. We realize we are walking along each day stepping on Pebbles of Grace with each stride. Only God can take it all, both the good and bad of one’s life, and interweave it into a beautiful tapestry, a tapestry of divine value, meaning, and purpose. May this collection of heavenly pearls drench your soul with a fresh awareness of just how passionately God loves you, how relentlessly He pursues you, and how through the acceptance of His son, Jesus Christ, how He affectionately offers you Pebbles of Grace.

Book excerpt: Intrigued by the piles of stones, rocks, and boulders that cover the landscape of the Holy Land, author Virginia Bates Kidd begins a deeper quest for a pattern within these emblems. As she journeys through the Scriptures, Kidd discovers how God transformed these simple facets of nature into timeless messages of love and grace, building onto a wide gamut of human emotions to reach the deepest recesses of our hearts. Kidd sprinkles pebbles of her own imagination onto familiar stories: the clink of stone upon stone resounds with startling life while Abraham builds his altar with Stones of Sorrow. The stones beneath the feet of the adulterous woman roll with a life of their own as she walks away from the temple. The trajectory of The First Stone is infused with the jealousy that drove Cains hand to murder. Pride and ambition pile up the bricks of the Tower of Babel, and Stones of Courage shows the earth shaking under a giants armor-clad weight, while David prevails with large faith and small stones. Throughout her exploration, Kidd winds down each story with a heartfelt devotion. She hopes these biblical stories will stir your imagination and warm your heart. Says Kidd: Seek your own concordance and go to work. Gods Word is a precious jewel, and He wants to enrich your life withit.

The enigmatic Shemal has known only two Runebreakers. One, her rival Kelephon, served the Pale King and his army of apocalypse. The other was Travis Wilder, the Runebreaker of prophecy. Now, in outcast and newly made Runebreaker Larad, Shemal has found a weapon to open the door between worlds. Yet if they don’t succeed in stopping it, two worlds will be lost forever.

Book A Handful of Pebbles

Download or read book A Handful of Pebbles written by Peter Barnes and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At first sight in Peter Barnes' book, A Handful of Pebbles, the word 'liberalism' does not seem threatening in any way. Quite the reverse, it is often associated with ideas like 'democracy', 'freedom' and 'generosity of spirit'. However, there is something quite sinister about 'theological liberalism'; although not a well-defined term, it usually refers to a belief system which rejects the orthodox view of the Christian faith as set out in the Bible, and summarized in the church's historic creeds and confessions. This book traces the origins and development of theological liberalism and convincingly demonstrates what a dangerous and destructive thing it is to the Christian church. The author shows that a battle continues to rage today, not between two varieties of true Christianity, but between truth and error, light and darkness, good and evil.

Book Four Perfect Pebbles

Book excerpt: The twentieth-anniversary edition of Marion Blumenthal Lazan’s acclaimed Holocaust memoir features new material by the author, a reading group guide, a map, and additional photographs. “The writing is direct, devastating, with no rhetoric or exploitation. The truth is in what’s said and in what is left out.”—ALA Booklist (starred review) Marion Blumenthal Lazan’s unforgettable and acclaimed memoir recalls the devastating years that shaped her childhood. Following Hitler’s rise to power, the Blumenthal family—father, mother, Marion, and her brother, Albert—were trapped in Nazi Germany. They managed eventually to get to Holland, but soon thereafter it was occupied by the Nazis. For the next six and a half years the Blumenthals were forced to live in refugee, transit, and prison camps, including Westerbork in Holland and Bergen-Belsen in Germany, before finally making it to the United States. Their story is one of horror and hardship, but it is also a story of courage, hope, and the will to survive. Four Perfect Pebbles features forty archival photographs, including several new to this edition, an epilogue, a bibliography, a map, a reading group guide, an index, and a new afterword by the author. First published in 1996, the book was an ALA Notable Book, an ALA Quick Pick for Reluctant Readers, and IRA Young Adults’ Choice, and a Notable Trade Book in the Field of Social Studies, and the recipient of many other honors. “A harrowing and often moving account.”—School Library Journal

Download or read book Letters From the Wilderness written by Enuma Chigbo and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2019-11-07 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I smiled as I walked down memory lane writing this page. It all started with an Uber ride in Cumming, Georgia, sometime in February 2017. There I was, a tad bit agitated about banking and financial matters, hoping I concealed my feelings as I rode in Pastor Denburk Gregory's car. He invited me to his church, The Full Truth Church of God Deliverance Center; and based on our very first conversation, which you will get to read inside, the letter writing began. Having gotten good responses from the church after the first letter, my work was done, or so I thought, until the Lord put more words in my heart. So there was a second letter, and a third, and this went on and on. Where am I going with this? I wondered. "The Lord says to tell you that you are writing a book," said his wife, Minister Veronica Gregory. That totally astounded me. Many a time I hear over and over, "The things we do are not ordinary." That Uber ride was clearly not an ordinary one. It was a prelude to the birth of Letters from the Wilderness, and to me, this was a clear confirmation of His Word, "Be not forgetful to entertain strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares" (Heb. 13:2). I do hope you enjoy reading this book even more than I have enjoyed writing it.

Book excerpt: Sand and Pebbles presents the first complete English rendering of Shasekishū--the classic, popular Buddhist "Tale Literature" (setsuwa). This collection of instructive, yet often humorous, anecdotes appeared in the late thirteenth century, within decades of the first stirrings of the revolutionary movements of Kamakura Buddhism. Shasekishū''s author, Mujū Ichien (1226-1312), lived in a rural temple apart from the centers of political and literary activity, and his stories reflect the customs, attitudes and lifestyles of the commoners. In Sand and Pebbles, complete translations of Book One and other significant narrative parts are supplemented by summaries of the remaining (especially didactic) material and by excerpts from Mujū's later work. Introduced by a historical sketch of the period, this work also contains a biography of Mujū. Illustrations, charts, a chronology, glossary of terms, notes, an extensive bibliography and an index guide the reader into a seldom seen corner of old Japan. Mujū and his writings will interest students of literature as well as scholars of Japanese religion, especially Buddhism. Anthropologists and sociologists will discover details of Kamakura life and thought unrecorded in the official chronicles of the age.

This well-focused and well-told account brings America’s most mythologized gemstone into sharp relief.” —Wall Street Journal “[T]he story of the search for the long-vanished mines of the Mayas . . . [Prospectors] Ridinger and Johnson endured earthquakes, coups, kidnapping, even civil war. But eventually they stumbled upon huge blocks of the alluring, elusive stone.” —New York Times Book Review Selected as an Indie Next List “Great Read” “The search for the sources of this mysterious rock reads like detective fiction, and involves geologists, archaeologists, entrepreneurs, poachers, and a host of other characters, but it’s all true.
