Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pear Growing in California Seeds of commercial pears were planted in the early days of mining in the Sierra foothills of the Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys, and a few oriental pears were set out by the Chinese immigrants. Later, graft ing wood and grafted trees of many varieties, brought from the missions, from eastern states, and even from Europe, were grown to supply fruit to miners and other new settlers. With the discovery of gold, certain enterprising young men who had come in search of the precious ore found that more money could be made by supplying fruit for the satisfaction of the prodigal miners, than by panning gold; and pear growing gained impetus. According to Wickson, the Bartlett was brought around the Horn in 1850 and planted in the Napa Valley. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Gum, laden with the bacteria, exudes from these points of infection and is carried into the blossoms or new tender twigs. By insects. Beginning thus in the blossoms or twigs in the early spring, the bacteria travel slowly downward in the bark to the larger branches, trunks, and roots, producing the characteristic gumming cankers in the bark. Insects continue to spread the disease throughout. The spring and summer. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Apple Growing in California Classic Reprint

Download or read book Apple Growing in California Classic Reprint written by Frank Wisdom Allen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-02-05 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Apple Growing in California With the large crop of 1926 in practically all sections, prices received for California apples were extremely low. However, the eight-year averages of total value, when compared with comparable figures of other deciduous fruits during the same period, show the value of California's apple crop to have been approximately three times that of either cherries or shipping plums, three times the almond crop, about one million and a half dollars in excess of the pear crop, and almost as great as that of apricot crop. In 1920 and 1921 rather extensive new plantings were made in Sonoma, Butte, San Bernardino, Kern, and Inyo counties. During the past five years new plantings have not been so extensive except in Sonoma and Tuolumne counties. The total number of non-bearing trees for the state now shows a slight decline, while the bearing acreage shows a gradual and consistent increase. With the exception of 1923, a heavy crop year, production has been relatively uniform. Yields on the Whole are dependable, not being so seriously affected by frosts and drought as are the orchards of the eastern states. The object and scope of these treatises have been given in prefaces of the preceding books, and though this work does not differ from its predecessors, for the convenience of readers the aim and the contents of the book in hand are set forth in this foreword. Book The California Fruits and How to Grow Them Classic Reprint

Download or read book The California Fruits and How to Grow Them Classic Reprint written by Edward James Wickson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The California Fruits and How to Grow Them The writer desires to express sincere gratitude for the cordial welcome and patronage which the two earlier editions of this treatise have received, not only in California, but in other semitropical countries. At the time of the preparation of the first edition in 1889 there was no thought that it would find foreign fields of usefulness; it was merely the earnest hope of the writer that it would win its way as a safe guide to the extension of the fruit interests of California; and to that end no effort was spared to constitute the work an explicit and truthful statement of natural conditions attending fruit growing in California, and accurate descriptions of the practises which best minister to success under these conditions. The generous patronage bestowed upon the work by Californians for a decade is a demonstration that this purpose was attained, and it is largely owing to their cordial commendation that the work has extended so widely into foreign fields. It is profoundly satisfactory to the writer to have the assurance that the acceptance of the treatise as a faithful guide to practise in California has actually foreshadowed its popularity wherever the same fruits are grown; and, inversely, its acceptance abroad is indirect evidence of its accuracy and helpfulness in California. With such inspiration as naturally proceeds from these facts, the writer has for two years devoted such time as could be spared from other pressing duties to a thorough revision of the work, condensing portions which were diffuse or merely of passing, local interest, and expanding other portions which are of deep and lasting importance and in which California experience and experiment really involve knowledge new to horticultural literature and of the widest applicability. The revision has required a rewriting of the most important chapters and a study of original data nearly equal to that involved in the preparation of the treatise in the first instance. The illustrations have also been largely replaced and the work brought up to the beginning of the century. As was done in connection with earlier editions, the writer desires to extend to all readers an exhortation to correction of any statement which may seem unwarranted from their points of view and experience. The subject is varied, multifold, and involved, every new fact is important and will be welcomed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cultivation of the Peach and the Pear: On the Delaware and Chesapeake Peninsula The Peach is closely allied to the Cherry, the Plum, the Apricot and the Almond, and, according to Prof. George Thurber, although usually called Amyga'alus Persz'ea now comes under the genus Prunus and will hereafter be likely referred to as Prunus Persz'ca. It originated in the East; Persia, or most probably China, and in this latter country has been cultivated for centuries. Darwin inclines to the view that the Peach is derived from the Almond, giving his reasons pro and can, and Ithink his conclusions are the ones generally accepted at the present time. Book The Prickly Pear as a Farm Crop Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Prickly Pear as a Farm Crop Classic Reprint written by David Griffiths and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prickly Pear as a Farm Crop NO attempts have been made hitherto to cultivate prickly pear as a regular crop in this country. The nearest approach to it was made by some of the old mission fathers of California, who im ported cuttings, probably from Mexico, and planted them in hedges, where thev served the double purpose of barriers against stock and as food for man. That they received any appreciable degree of cultivation. However, is very doubtful. They were probably grown in much the same manner that the so-called cultivated prickly pears are grown in Mexico to-day. An extended use has been made of the native crop at various times for the past fifty years or more in southern Texas. But it has mainly been spasmodic, lasting only until the drought was broken, ex cept for sheep and goats. Which are fed on it regularly. And in the case Of the few dairymen who have made it a practice to feed it for a portion of each vear. In short, the prickly pear has been con sidered an emergency feed, to be used only when other feeds fail. Even enthusiastic pear feeders in Texas thought that the results to be obtained from planting and cultivating an experimental tract would only be very interesting. There was little expectation that the plants would respond to cultivation as they have done. The facts presented in this paper, however, Show that the prickly pear will produce, under proper cultural methods similar to those used for the common staple crops, yields of roughage superior to some of the standard agricultural (crops of the region, especially when an off year occurs. It has proved itself under cultivation not onlv an emergency feed but an insurance against famine, as well as a plant which can be grown and depended upon regularly as a farm crop.
