I'm not saying I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth, was spoiled or never had problems. But my parents were loving, hard-working, caring, protective and supportive of me. Whatever path to progress I wanted to take, they gave me the go ahead. My life changed drastically at 18. Sadly, I lost my father to leukemia right after I graduated, and lost my childhood best friend to the evil streets--to a much older and very abusive man who swooped her up as soon as she turned 18. Her hopes and dreams were crushed by his strong control and abuse. I was determined to go on with my life to be the best I could despite all the obstacles I faced. I empowered myself! I learned in my twenties, what it felt like to be a victim and I didn't want to go out like that! I made Wedsnesday's Child Transform to Thursday's Child! I wrote this book to tell my story in hopes that it will inspire and motivate someone else. We don't have to be victims of our circumstances. Instead, we can become overcomers, survivors and victorious!

Book Beating the Global Odds

Download or read book Beating the Global Odds written by Paul A. Laudicina and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-09-04 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Answer to Global Overload Contending with the 24/7 news cycle and an endless barrage of choices and information has stymied leadership and decision-making strategies among those at the top. But we all know, this is not a just a problem for the elite. The broad-based reaction to this chaotic, unmanageable assault has been to retrench, and to focus on immediate, controllable decisions. In the process, we lose sight of the horizon. More dangerous still, is the shift we’ve seen from value creation to wealth creation, where information technology 1.0 has enabled a transaction-based society in which the “deal” is more important than the value it drives or the relationships it is based on. On our current path, the odds of a better future are slim. What we need is a new value proposition. Beating the Global Odds is the answer to the dangers of too much of a good thing. There’s no going back, but there is the opportunity to set things right. In this book, Paul A. Laudicina, Managing Partner and Chairman of the Board of global consulting firm A.T. Kearney, provides a fast-paced and engaging tour of how we got to this point and what we can do about it. Drawing on examples from everything from world history and current media to anecdotes from his vast network of CEOs and the world’s most innovative thinkers, Laudicina helps bring our world of seemingly fuzzy and disconnected pixels into sharp focus. The result is a compelling case for change and call to action—not only for global leaders but also for everyone who struggles with the question of how we can inspire and seize a better future... how we can beat the global odds.

Book One Man s Climb

Book excerpt: A deeply moving story of the beauty and brutality of life, and death, on the world’s most unpredictable and perilous mountain. Sitting just lower than Everest at 8,611 meeres above sea level on the China–Pakistan border, the Savage Mountain claims the lives of even the most experienced climbers. Alongside severe altitude, the weather is notoriously volatile and the climb relentlessly steep. A staggering one in four attempts result in death on the mountain. In One Man’s Climb, Adrian Hayes details an intensely personal account of his attempts to climb K2 – first in 2013 and again in 2014. Absorbing and self-reflective, his journey is as much a story of climbing a mountain as it is a testament to the human spirit’s ability to endure.

Book The Grace to Race

Download or read book The Grace to Race written by Madonna Buder and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2010-10-05 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SISTER MADONNA BUDER is 80 years old, has run more than 340 triathlons, and doesn’t know what all the fuss is about. In The Grace to Race, she shares the no-nonsense spirit and deep faith that inspired her extraordinary journey from a prominent St. Louis family to a Catholic Convent and finally to championship finish lines all over the world. As a beautiful young woman, she became an elegant equestrian and accomplished amateur actress. But as she describes in this intimate memoir, she had a secret plan as early as 14: she wanted to devote her life to God. After being courted by the most eligible bachelors in her hometown, she chose a different path and became a Sister of the Good Shepherd. She lived a mostly cloistered life as a Nun until her late forties, when a Priest suggested she take a run on the beach. She dug up a pair of shorts in a pile of donated clothes, found a pair of second-hand tennis shoes, and had a second epiphany. This time, she discovered the spiritual joy of pushing her body to the limit and of seeing God’s natural world in all its splendor. More than thirty years later, she is known as the Iron Nun for all the triathlons she has won. Just five years ago, the age 75–79 category was created for her at the Hawaiian Ironman in Kona, where she completed a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, and a full 26.2-mile marathon in record time. Now she has set her sights on a new goal: inaugurating another new Ironman age group, 80–84, in 2010. Sister Madonna holds dozens of records, has broken dozens of bones, and tells of dozens of miracles and angels that propelled her to a far-flung race. "It is my faith that has carried me through life’s ups and downs," she writes. "Whenever injured, I wait for the Lord to pick me up again and set me on my feet, confidently reminding Him, ‘God, you know, my intent is to keep running toward you.’" The Grace to Race is the courageous story of a woman who broke with convention, followed her heart, and found her higher mission.

Download or read book Bullsh t Comparisons written by Andrew Brooks and published by Footnote Press. This book was released on 2024-03-28 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life is complicated, comparisons are easy. We consume enormous quantities of information every day from sources that are reliable, and those less trustworthy, including journalists, politicians, friends and social media. One of the most commons tools we use to communicate is comparison. Are we suffering a 'hurricane' of migrants? Do dogs look like their owners? Is Oxford better than Harvard? Metaphors, models and metrics are used to compare anything from schools, to wars, to iconic people. But how helpful are they? What truths do they hide and what bullsh*t do comparisons propagate? Looking across a fascinating range of situations both familiar and unfamiliar, serious and light-hearted, Bullsh*t Comparisons is a ground-breaking guide to the role of could-be-true but misleading comparisons. It is illuminated by examples spanning the globe from university league tables, to childhood rivalries, politicians' tawdry analogies, the FIFA World Footballer of the year award and Chinese neo-colonialism in Africa. Ideal for anyone interested in critical thinking or who simply wants to be able to spot bullsh*t at twenty paces, this thought-provoking, intelligent and often amusing book will challenge you to think critically about the use of comparison.
