Book The Peaches of New York Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Peaches of New York Classic Reprint written by U. P. Hedrick and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 748 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Peaches of New York Gentlemen: - I have the honor to transmit herewith the manuscript of the fifth in our series of fruit-publications, to be known as "The Peaches of New York," and to constitute Part II of the report of this institution for 1916. Peach-growing is an important industry in the State of New York. In certain counties the production of this fruit has been a main factor in the well-known prosperity of many owners of peach-orchards. Moreover, the peach, when at its best, is a luscious article of food and adds greatly not only to the enjoyment, but to the healthfulness, of our diet. The commercial and dietary importance of the peach is, therefore, the justification for the preparation of this volume. Because the numerous varieties of peaches differ greatly in quality and in their adaptation to varying conditions, a comprehensive study of those varieties which are, or which may be, grown in this State seemed greatly worth while. It is with a feeling of satisfaction, even of pride, that I submit to you the accompanying manuscript. Its preparation reflects great credit upon Prof. Hedrick and his associates and upon the makers of the plates. Book The American Peach Orchard

Download or read book The American Peach Orchard written by F. A. Waugh and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Peach Orchard: A Sketch of the Practice of Peach, Growing in North America at the Beginning of the Twentieth Century The rapid specialization of all the fruit-growing industries in North America has made the production of peaches an art by itself. To keep pace with such specialization it has been found expedient to discuss the management of the several fruit crops in separate monographs. Peach growing is now a large and important industry and deserves a book of its own. The demand for such a book has existed for several years, but special difficulties have been experienced in meeting it. The work of preparing such a book was undertaken by the late Charles Wright of Delaware, and by the late Prof. W. G. Johnson of the Orange Judd Company, but both gentlemen died leaving the manuscripts unwritten. The writer has, indeed, experienced many tedious and troublesome delays, but has finally brought the work to completion through the help of many kind friends. In writing this book he has called to his aid a large number of practical peach growers in all parts of the United States and Canada, whose help and advice he wishes most cordially to acknowledge. To interpret properly their wide and varied experience has been the author's prime endeavor. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peach Culture The great increase of the peach trade is shown by the fact that the shipment from the Peninsula in 1870 was stated at baskets. In the abundant year of 1875 the shipment reached over baskets, and it is estimated that as many, or more, were left on the trees or under them. Among the inventions to facilitate the operations of the peach-grower that have appeared since the first edi tion are Peach Cullers. One of these will do the work of five or six hands; and as they do it as well, or better, they have, in large orchards, superseded culling by hand. A faded silk purse, starred with silver beads and infolded at either end by a silver sliding ring to hold fast its treasures, lying before me brings back from the years that are gone the one from whose silken-mitted hand it swung. I see her walking adown the fragrant, flowery road of a far-away yesterday, her leghorn bonnet with a wreath of flowers beneath its brim crowning her banded dusky-gold hair, while its broad ribbons are tied in an expansive bow beneath her dimpled chin. The white Cashmere shawl is draped to disclose at the throat the broad lace collar clasped with a cameo pin, and the shawl itself is held, where its folds meet just below the bosom, by an arabesqued bar of gold. Book Tibetan Peach Pie

Download or read book Tibetan Peach Pie written by Tom Robbins and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2014-05-27 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Internationally bestselling novelist and American icon Tom Robbins' legendary memoir--wild tales of his life and times, both at home and around the globe. Tom Robbins’ warm, wise, and wonderfully weird novels—including Still Life With Woodpecker, Jitterbug Perfume, and Fierce Invalids Home From Hot Climates—provide an entryway into the frontier of his singular imagination. Madcap but sincere, pulsating with strong social and philosophical undercurrents, his irreverent classics have introduced countless readers to natural born hitchhiking cowgirls, born-again monkeys, a philosophizing can of beans, exiled royalty, and problematic redheads. In Tibetan Peach Pie, Robbins turns that unparalleled literary sensibility inward, stitching together stories of his unconventional life, from his Appalachian childhood to his globetrotting adventures —told in his unique voice that combines the sweet and sly, the spiritual and earthy. The grandchild of Baptist preachers, Robbins would become over the course of half a century a poet-interruptus, an air force weatherman, a radio dj, an art-critic-turned-psychedelic-journeyman, a world-famous novelist, and a counter-culture hero, leading a life as unlikely, magical, and bizarre as those of his quixotic characters. Robbins offers intimate snapshots of Appalachia during the Great Depression, the West Coast during the Sixties psychedelic revolution, international roving before homeland security monitored our travels, and New York publishing when it still relied on trees. Written with the big-hearted comedy and mesmerizing linguistic invention for which he is known, Tibetan Peach Pie is an invitation into the private world of a literary legend.
