Book Constructing Human Rights in the Age of Globalization

Download or read book Constructing Human Rights in the Age of Globalization written by Mahmood Monshipouri and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-06-01 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both human rights and globalization are powerful ideas and processes, capable of transforming the world in profound ways. Notwithstanding their universal claims, however, the processes are constructed, and they draw their power from the specific cultural and political contexts in which they are constructed. Far from bringing about a harmonious cosmopolitan order, they have stimulated conflict and opposition. In the context of globalization, as the idea of human rights has become universal, its meaning has become one more terrain of struggle among groups with their own interests and goals. Part I of this volume looks at political and cultural struggles to control the human rights regime -- that is, the power to construct the universal claims that will prevail in a territory -- with respect to property, the state, the environment, and women. Part II examines the dynamics and counterdynamics of transnational networks in their interactions with local actors in Iran, China, and Hong Kong. Part III looks at the prospects for fruitful human rights dialogiue between competing universalisms that by definition are intolerant of conradiction and averse to compromise.

Book Renovating Politics in Contemporary Vietnam

Download or read book Renovating Politics in Contemporary Vietnam written by Zachary Abuza and published by Lynne Rienner Publishers. This book was released on 2001 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moving from the 1950s to the present, Zachary Abuza explores Vietnamese politics and culture through the lens of the internal debates over political reform. Abuza focuses on issues of representation, intellecutal freedom, the rise of civil society, and the emergence of a loyal opposition, assessing the prospects for change. He finds that, while some mildly dissident groups may add impetus to the effort, internal party protest remains the most legitimate - and most likely - form of political dissent in the country. His analysis offers a compelling portrayal of the extraordinary contradictions that are at the core of contemporary Vietnam. Abuza explores contemporary Vietnamese politics through the lens of the internal debates over political reform.

Book Democratic Values Political Structures and Alternative Politics in Greater China

Download or read book Democratic Values Political Structures and Alternative Politics in Greater China written by David Zweig and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study addresses the relationship among popular attitudes toward democracy, a state's political structures-- parties, elections, and the government bodies to which candidates in these societies are elected-- and the ways in which people participate in politics. It argues that high levels of popular democratic consciousness and strong demands for participation, in the absence of legitimate democratic institutions, lead citizens to resort to nonformal political strategies, including civil disobedience, to meet their needs.
