Book Suitable for the Wilds

Download or read book Suitable for the Wilds written by Mary Percy Jackson and published by University of Calgary Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The plea was advertised in the British Medical Journal in February 1929: seeking "strong energetic Medical Women with post-graduate experience in Midwifery" for "country work" in western Canada. A young Dr. Mary Percy was intrigued. After graduating with degrees in medicine and surgery from the University of Birmingham in 1927, she had been searching for the kind of opportunity which would offer both adventure and practical experience. She answered the advertisement and set off for the Peace River region of Northern Alberta in June of 1929. Little did she know that her "adventure" in the Canadian north was to last more than seventy years. Suitable for the Wilds: Letters from Northern Alberta, 1929-1931, is a collection of Dr. Mary Percy Jackson's letters written to family and friends in the early years of her practice, from 1929-1931. The letters offer a fascinating glimpse at life in northern Alberta at the beginning of the Depression, when the area was being farmed and settled by new European immigrants. These homesteaders, along with the area's Aboriginal and M tis population, were Dr. Percy's patients, scattered throughout a territory covering nearly 400 square miles. Vigilant about vaccination, nutrition, and preventive medicine, she quickly proved to be a talented physician who was truly ahead of her time, particularly in the area of tuberculosis treatment and prevention. Dr. Percy's dedication, good nature, and unfailing sense of humour shine through in her letters. This delightful and captivating collection is a tribute to her indomitable spirit.

Book Where Happiness Dwells

Download or read book Where Happiness Dwells written by Robin Ridington and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2013-02-25 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dane-zaa people have lived in BC’s Peace River area for thousands of years. Elders documented their peoples’ history and worldview, passing them on through storytelling. Language loss, however, threatens to break the bonds of knowledge transmission. At the request of the Doig River First Nations, anthropologists Robin and Jillian Ridington present a history of the Dane-zaa people based on oral histories collected over a half century of fieldwork. These powerful stories not only preserve traditional knowledge for future generations, they also tell the inspiring story of how the Dane-zaa learned to succeed and flourish in the modern world.

Book Balsam Fir

Download or read book Balsam Fir written by E. V. Bakuzis and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 1965-07-30 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Balsam Fir was first published in 1965. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. Professors Bakuzis and Hansen, with the assistance of a number of co-authors of individual chapters, present an exhaustive survey of the literature on the balsam fir, providing a coherent picture of the species and its place in nature and forestry practice. The balsam fir is used extensively in the pulp and paper industry, and it is known to millions as a traditional Christmas tree. In North America it is a major tree species in Canada, in the northeastern United States, and in the Great Lakes region. In the search of the literature, over 2000 sources were consulted and considerably more than half of them are cited in the book. The references, organized in an ecological framework, cover the period from the seventeenth century to the present. The authors have reviewed and integrated these data in a unified, but multipurposed, book. In the integration of the source material the authors also made contributions of their own. The book contains the following chapters: Botanical Foundations, Geography and Synecology, Ecological Factors, Microbiology, Entomology, Reproduction, Stand Development, Growth and Yield, and Utilization. Appendixes list fungi and myxomycetes and insects associated with balsam fir. There are 30 illustrations, including a frontispiece drawing by the noted nature artist Francis Lee Jaques. The book will appeal to a wide range of readers specifically concerned with forestry, including research workers, educators, entomologists, pathologists, and managing foresters, as well as conservationists and wildlife biologist in general.

The history of the Peace is brought to life through an imaginative mix of fictional storytellers and historical events. To Thelma Irvine, the Peace is much more than an attractive landscape and a mighty river. In this book a cast of fascinating characters moves through the pages to recreate the adventures of the past. They challenge rapids and canyons, rough trails and loneliness to become the heritage of the present day. The written history of the Peace includes exploration, fur trading, gold mining, the search for new railway passes, and the development of resources. This book is part prose, part poetry, entertaining and informative. The narrators are fictitious. Many people and events are historical.
