This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Bright and the Party of Peace, Retrenchment, and Reform This Volume is not, in the ordinary sense of the term, a biography. Mr. Bright's life has been comparatively uneventful, so far as the general public is concerned in knowing or inquiring into it; and the reasons which in any case impose silence or reserve upon one who traces the career of an eminent man during his lifetime apply with special force in this instance. In the House of Commons and on the platform Mr. Bright has freely lifted the veil from his thoughts, his motives of action, his political and even his religious belief, so that as a statesman and orator we seem to know him better than any other man of the century. But beyond these limits he is less known; and it is his privilege to be so. He has been characteristically a man of the people - loving, as he said at the moment when he was invited to enter Mr. Gladstone's first Cabinet, to remain among his own people. Book Liberty Retrenchment and Reform

Download or read book Liberty Retrenchment and Reform written by Eugenio F. Biagini and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In common with republicanism or socialism in continental Europe, Liberalism in nineteenth-century Britain was a mass movement. By focussing on the period between the 1860s and the 1880s, this book sets out to explain why and how that happened, and to examine the people who supported it, their beliefs, and the way in which the latter related to one another and to reality. Popular suport for the Liberal party was not irrational in either its objectives or its motivations: on the contrary, its dissemination was due to the fact that the programme of reforms proposed by the party leaders offered convincing solutions to some of the problems perceived as being the most urgent at the time. This is a revealing, innovative synthesis of the history of popular support for the Liberal party, which emphasises the extent to which Liberalism stood in the common heritage of European and American democracy.

Book International Peacekeeping The Yearbook of International Peace Operations

Download or read book International Peacekeeping The Yearbook of International Peace Operations written by Michael Bothe and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-01 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International Peacekeeping is devoted to reporting upon and analyzing international peacekeeping with an emphasis upon legal and policy issues. It provides the interested public - civil servants, politicians, the military, academics, journalists, and others - with an up-to-date source of information on peacekeeping, enabling them to keep abreast of the most important developments in the field. This is achieved not only by the provision of 'basic documents' (on CD ROM), such as Security Council Resolutions or Reports from the UN Secretary-General, but also by expert commentaries on world events connected with peacekeeping operations. Thus, International Peacekeeping not only has a recording and documentary function, for those who wish to be kept well-informed, but also plays a role in forming opinions on the further development of peacekeeping as an instrument. Peacekeeping is treated in a pragmatic light, seen as a form of international military cooperation for the preservation or restoration of international peace and security, attention being focused primarily on UN peacekeeping operations. This yearbook is the continuation of the journal International Peacekeeping.

Book Lancashire and the New Liberalism

Download or read book Lancashire and the New Liberalism written by P. F. Clarke and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-03-26 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why was there a Liberal Government in Britain from 1905 until the First World War? And why was the Liberal party replaced by the Labour party so shortly afterwards? These are the kinds of problems which Dr Clarke examines in his study of the Liberal revival in Lancashire. The vote in north-west England was largely responsible for bringing the Liberal Government into power and for maintaining its position, but it also produced almost half the new Labour MP's in 1906. Thus any satisfactory interpretation of electoral history in the early twentieth century must account for what happened in Lancashire. This book calls into question many of the conventional assumptions about British politics in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Book The British Peace Movement 1870 1914

Download or read book The British Peace Movement 1870 1914 written by Paul Laity and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 2002-01-03 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first detailed scholarly study of the late Victorian and Edwardian peace movement, the campaigns of which made a significant impact on political debate, especially during the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1), the Bulgarian Atrocities campaign (1876-8), Britain's conflict in Egypt (1882), the South African War (1899-1902), and the intensifying international crisis before 1914. The movement's activists included Richard Cobden, Herbert Spencer, Keir Hardie, J. A. Hobson, and Norman Angell. Among the first to benefit from the opening of the Peace Society Archive, the book focuses on the specialized associations at the heart of the peace movement. Paul Laity identifies the existence of different programmes for the achievement of a just, permanent peace, and offers a new interpretation of the reaction of peace campaigners to war in 1914. At the same time, his book makes an important and original contribution to the history of popular politics and political ideas in Britain.
