Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peace or War in South Africa The increasing luxury and the rise in the price of the necessities of life drove our public men to seek sources of revenue which their forefathers would have scorned. The sale of public offices, of seats in Parliament, and of influence, had created a system of jobbery so gigantic that it is to-day almost impossible to appreciate its far-reaching effects. The Paymaster of the Forces thought it no disgrace to use hundreds of thousands of pounds Of the public money for private ends; Ministers did not Shrink from Open bribery, from receiving fees and percentages, and from sharing the profit on contracts of every kind. Book Peace or War in South Africa

Download or read book Peace or War in South Africa written by A. M. S. Methuen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peace or War in South Africa The prospect of a prolongation of the South African War is beginning to shake the confidence of the public in the ability of their Ministers. When we see that after many efforts a powerful Ministry is unable to fulfil any of its predictions and that all its calculations have been falsified, we must in ordinary prudence conclude that it has totally misjudged the difficulties of its task, that its policy is not based on common sense, and that its wisdom is not equal to its good intentions. Many men who, like myself, have hitherto given an independent but steady support to the Ministerial party begin to ask themselves whether this party is pursuing a policy which is consistent with the safety and the high traditions of England. Book excerpt: Excerpt from South Africa and the War: A Lecture Delivered at Stellenbosch, 25 September, 1914 To turn to the other side, Russia is, by common consent, regarded as the head and patron of the Slav nationality and its various off-shoots. Its huge population, some one hundred and thirty millions, presses along its western frontier 011 the Teutonic races of middle Europe. With an eye to the dismemberment of the Turkish Empire, Russia has agreed - not without searchings of heart - to the foundation of the Kingdoms of Bulgaria and Servia which, while removed from direct Russian control, from national and religious reasons always look up to the leadership of that power. In one respect, Russia is different from Germany. She is fortunate in possessing in Asia a boundless territory well-suited for European occupation and she therefore lacks the pretext for territorial expansion. France, with her huge territory in North Africa, and England with her vast commercial and financial interests were bound for every reason to maintain the peace of Europe. True, the former country had a traditional inheritance in the cry of revenge for the loss of the two provinces taken by the Germans as a prize of war in 1870. But the wound, though it rankled deep, seemed to be slowly healing over, and her military preparations were rather the outcome of the fear of German aggression than the desire of any warlike effort on her own part. Book excerpt: Excerpt from With Roberts to Pretoria: A Tale of the South African War The second phase of the struggle did not afford such ex amples of warfare on a large scale as might have been anticipated. The operations of Lord Methuen for the relief of Kimberley were brought to a standstill by the inadequacy of the comparatively small force under his command for the task of breaking down the Opposition of the Boer army, holding, like that before Ladysmith, a position of immense natural strength. With the advance, however, of the army under General Roberts, resistance on a large scale virtually collapsed.
