Book The Strategy of Nonviolent Defense

Download or read book The Strategy of Nonviolent Defense written by Robert J. Burrowes and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2015-10-26 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because of the way in which the history of nonviolence has been marginalized, relatively few people have a sense of the rich history of nonviolent struggle or realize that it can be systematically planned and applied. Nevertheless, the historical record illustrates that nonviolent struggle is a powerful form of political action. But can it be effective against military aggression? The Strategy of Nonviolent Defense answers this question in the affirmative by first defining the notion of "social cosmology"—the four mutually reinforcing features that determine the character of any society. It then devotes attention to strategies for dealing with conflict, in particular, to developing a strategic theory and framework for planning a strategy of nonviolent defense. In order to develop this theory, Burrowes synthesizes insights drawn from the strategic theory of Carl von Clausewitz, the nonviolence of Mahatma Gandhi, and recent human needs and conflict theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The natural sympathy and understanding of people everywhere must be the soil in which the new humanism can thrive.' For Daisaku Ikeda, whose words these are, education has long been one of the fundamental priorities of his work and teaching. His emphasis on the intellectual legacy bequeathed to humanity by the great teachers of civilization is in this volume encapsulated by the notion of a 'new humanism': a significant residue ofwisdom that in the right circumstances may be passed on to future generations, expanding horizons, making connections between different cultures and encouraging fresh insights and new discoveries across the globe. These circumstances are perhaps most fully realised in the context of universities. In promoting his core values of education and peace, the author has delivered lectures and speeches at more than twenty-five academies, colleges and research institutes worldwide. This stimulating collection, which includes the author's most recent lectures, ranges widely across topics as diverse as art, religion, culture and time, and draws creatively on the sages of ancient India, China and Japan as well as on visionary thinkers from every nation, including Tolstoy, Victor Hugo and Gandhi.

Book Waves of Change

Download or read book Waves of Change written by Shailendra Singh and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2024-07-07 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book adopts an interdisciplinary approach for analysis and insights into the related areas of media, conflict, peacebuilding, and development in the Pacific, a region in the throes of rapid change. Besides a review of previous publications that have either directly or indirectly touched upon the subject matter, the nine chapters draw on recent developments in the Pacific to provide fresh perspectives and insights into the current issues at stake. As a region undergoing rapid transformation, the complexities are unraveled with precision and depth. The focus is appropriate: not only is sustainable peace and stability elusive, but its absence also impedes long term development.

Book excerpt: “Wisdom and compassion are intimately linked and mutually reinforcing.Compassion in Buddhism does not involve the forcible suppression ofour natural emotions, our likes and dislikes. With this as a major theme, Daisaku Ikeda offers fresh insights and new ways of thinking in each of his seven US university lectures collected in A New Way Forward. These explorations on the power of dialogue, the interdependence of all life, the importance of developing in one's character the attributes of wisdom, courage, and compassion, and other topics, stir the heart and mind and lead to the inevitable conclusion that each individual holds the key to a lasting peace.

Book The Fragility of the Failed State Paradigm

Download or read book The Fragility of the Failed State Paradigm written by Neyire Akpinarli and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009-10-23 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The absence of effective government, one of the most important issues in current international law, became prominent with the“failed state” concept at the beginning of the 1990s. Public international law, however, lacked sufficient legal means to deal with the phenomenon. Neither attempts at state reconstruction in countries such as Afghanistan and Somalia on the legal basis of Chapter VII of the UN Charter nor economic liberalisation have addressed fundamental social and economic problems. This work investigates the weaknesses of the “failed state” paradigm as a long-term solution for international peace and security, arguing that the solution to the absence of effective government can be found only in an economic and social approach and a true universalisation of international law.
