Book Peabody in Vintage Postcards

Download or read book Peabody in Vintage Postcards written by William R. Power and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peabody was settled in 1626 as Brooksby Village and was originally a part of the town of Salem. In 1752, citizens joined in the area of town known as Salem Village to form the town of Danvers. The separation of the two towns into Danvers and South Danvers took place in 1855. In 1868, the name of South Danvers was changed to Peabody to honor its native son George Peabody. In Peabody, vivid postcards offer a contrasting view of what it was like to live and work in a community having two distinct characters: the town center, with its bustling tanning industries, which soon earned Peabody the sobriquet of "Leather Capital of the World," and the pastoral farming villages of Brookdale, Locustdale, Brooksby, and West Peabody, which portray a sense of life in rural America during this same era.

Well known as the Collar City, it is the home of Uncle Sam and of the largest annual Flag Day parade. It is less well known as being the home of two National Baseball Hall of Famers, Johnny "the Trojan" Evers and Michael "King" Kelly. In its prime, Troy had more than sixty churches, fifteen breweries, and at least a dozen theaters. Troy in Vintage Postcards reveals through the postcard photographer's eyes what the city was like from the early to the mid-1900s, with a few added surprises from the late 1800s. It shows not only how much of Troy has changed but also how much has remained the same.

Download or read book The Peabody Hotel written by Scott Faragher and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The South's finest and one of America's best-these words have always defined the world-famous Peabody Hotel in Memphis, Tennessee. The Peabody emerged from the war-torn, post-Civil War South in 1869 to become one of the finest hotels in America. Its reputation for comfort, service, and fine dining grew along with Memphis's stature as "the river city, cotton capital, and birthplace of the blues." The most famous and infamous citizens of the era stayed at the original Peabody in its day. There, plantations were won or lost on a roll of the dice. After more than 50 years, the original hotel was replaced by a new 12-story, 615-room hotel in 1925. It was then that the hotel's name became synonymous with elegance. It also became the social center of Memphis and the mid-South, and a haunt for the rich and famous. The celebrated ducks swimming in the marble lobby fountain, parties in the skyway, or dancing on the open plantation roof to the music of the most renowned bands and orchestras of the day have all been part of this fabulous hotel's history. Today, the fully restored Peabody retains its reputation for legendary Southern hospitality and tasteful elegance. The hotel continues to serve as an anchor for the restoration and revitalization of the downtown area of one of America's most important cities.
