Book excerpt: Beneath the escarpment of the Mogollon Rim in Gila County lies Payson, Arizona. Founded as Green Valley in 1882 by ranchers and miners, the town site of Payson was laid out by local blacksmith James C. Callaghan and local merchant and cattle rancher John C. Hise. Two years later, local rancher and Native American fighter Charlie Meadows founded the Payson Rodeo in a mid-town meadow, which ultimately became the worlds oldest continuous rodeo. When the cattle and timber industries declined, Payson evolved into a retirement and tourist destination. People looking for places to hike, bike, fish, hunt, and camp are attracted to the Payson area, which is also popular for its festivals and historic sites. A replica of Zane Greys cabin stands next to the local museum, and the Tonto Natural Bridge is just 11 miles outside of town.

Book Adventist Heritage of Health Hope and Healing

Download or read book Adventist Heritage of Health Hope and Healing written by William C. Andress and published by TEACH Services, Inc.. This book was released on 2013-11 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In mid-1800s America, in a milieu where thousands were dying prematurely from tuberculosis, dysentery, yellow fever, cholera, diphtheria, smallpox, and even malaria, God raised up a people with a salvific message, both physically and spiritually. In Adventist Heritage of Health, Hope, and Healing, readers will be spellbound by stories of: The fledgling Western Health Reform Institute which became the largest health care institute of its kind. The $5,000 miracle that led to the founding of Loma Linda University Medical Center, one of the nation's premier medical facilities in southern California. The China Doctor, Grandma Whitney, and the humble academician with three doctorate degrees, who have influenced thousands through an integration of practical religion and health. The prophetic Comprehensive Health Vision that outlines a 10-step program for adding years to your life. In this book, Dr. Andress explores little known historical connections that coalesce into a persuasive case for a Christian theology of healing and wellness. Throughout the book, personal anecdotes and illustrations provide a vivid and tangible portrait of a man seeking to better understand and live out the divine plan for health of body, mind, and soul. A compelling work.--John Wesley Taylor V, Ph.D Professor of education, philosophy, and research, Southern Adventist University If 'The health should be as sacredly guarded as the character' (Child Guidance, page 342), then this volume is as valuable as any work in theology. It is the heritage of all God's children to be healthy.--Arthur Mallon, teacher, author, and evangelist

Book The Burning Earth A History

Download or read book The Burning Earth A History written by Sunil Amrith and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2024-09-24 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of Literary Hub's Most Anticipated Books of 2024 A brilliant, paradigm-shifting global history of how humanity has reshaped the planet, and the planet has shaped human history, over the last 500 years. In this magisterial book, historian Sunil Amrith twins the stories of environment and Empire, of genocide and eco-cide, of an extraordinary expansion of human freedom and its planetary costs. Drawing on an extraordinarily rich diversity of primary sources, he reckons with the ruins of Portuguese silver mining in Peru, British gold mining in South Africa, and oil extraction in Central Asia. He explores the railroads and highways that brought humans to new terrains of battle against each other and against stubborn nature. Amrith’s account of the ways in which the First and Second World Wars involved the massive mobilization not only of men, but of other natural resources from around the globe, provides an essential new way of understanding war as an irreversible reshaping of the planet. So too does this book reveal the reality of migration as consequence of environmental harm. The imperial, globe-spanning pursuit of profit, joined with new forms of energy and new possibilities of freedom from hunger and discomfort, freedom to move and explore, has brought change to every inch of the Earth. Amrith relates in gorgeous prose, and on the largest canvas, a mind-altering epic—vibrant with stories, characters, and vivid images—in which humanity might find the collective wisdom to save itself.
