Book excerpt: Constructing Gardens, Cultivating the City is the first cultural history of major new parks developed in Paris in the late twentieth century, as part of the city's program of adaptive reuse of industrial spaces. Thanks to laws that gave the city more political autonomy, Paris's local government launched a campaign of park creation in the late 1970s that continued to the turn of the millennium. The parks in this book represent this campaign and illustrate different facets of their cultural and historical context. Archival research, interviews, and analyses of the parks reveal how postmodern debates about urban planning, the historic city, public space, and nature's presence in an urban setting influenced their designs. In sum, the city adopted the garden as a model for public parks, investing in complex, richly symbolic and representational spaces. These parks were intended to represent contemporary twists on traditional designs and serve local residents as much as they would contribute to Paris's role as a world city. The parks' development process often included points of conflict, pointing to differing views on what Parisian space should represent and fundamental contradictions between the characteristics of public space and the garden as it is traditionally defined. These parks demonstrate the ongoing cultivation of the city over time, in which transformed sites not only fulfil new functions but also engage with history and their surroundings to create new meaning. They stand for landscape as a form of signifying cultural production that directly engages with other art forms and ways of knowing. Just as the Luxembourg Gardens, the Tuileries, and the Buttes-Chaumont parks exemplify their eras' cultural dynamics, such parks as the Jardin Atlantique, Parc André-Citroën, and the Jardin des Halles express contemporary French culture within the archetypal space of their era, the city. Finally, they point the way to current trends in landscape architecture, such as citizen gardening and ecological initiatives.

The initial objective of some itinerant photographers is to make a book; their shooting practice is conditioned by this objective, as well as their travel experience. Their books – designed as one coherent hole – refer to their wandering experience, even though their stories are never completely free from fiction. In these books, their travels are converged, and their subjectivity is revealed. It is therefore relevant to call such books made of photographies, and possibly words about the travel experience, Photographic Travel books (comparably to Travel books). Danièle Méaux has tackled the task of characterizing this genre.

This book is the first to explore in detail the encounter between Albert Flocon and Gaston Bachelard in postwar Paris. Bachelard was a philosopher and historian of science who was also involved in literary studies and poetics. Flocon was a student of the Bauhaus in Dessau, Germany, who specialized in copper engraving. Both deeply ingrained in the surrealist avant-garde movements, each acted at the frontiers of their respective métiers in exploring uncharted territory. Bachelard experienced the sciences of his time as constantly undergoing radical changes, and he wanted to create a historical epistemology that would live up to this experience. He saw the elementary gesture of the copper engraverthe hand of the engraveras meeting the challenge of resistant and resilient matter in an exemplary fashion. Flocon was fascinated by Bachelards unconventional approach to the sciences and his poetics. Together, their relationship interrogated and celebrated the interplay of hand and matter as it occurs in poetic writing, in the art of engraving, and in scientific experimentation. In the form of a double biography, Hans-Jörg Rheinberger succeeds in writing a lucid intellectual history and at the same time presents a fascinating illustrated reading of Flocons copper engravings. Rheinberger is one of the premier scholars of the world in his fields, and an acknowledged expert on Bachelard. Though the book is exceptionally short, there is a wealth of learning and scholarship packed into it. The author is intimately familiar with all of the literature on the subjects he discusses, and master of the relevant primary sources and documents relating to Bachelard and Flocon. I was utterly charmed and captivated by this book, continually spurred on to read and think more. James J. The question that guides this volume stems from Walter Benjamin's studies of nineteenth-century Parisian culture as the apex of capitalist aesthetics. Thirteen scholars test Benjamin's ideas about the centrality of Paris, formulated in the 1930s, from a variety of methodological perspectives. Many investigate the underpinnings of the French capital's reputation and mythic force, which was based largely upon the city's capacity to put itself on display. Some of the authors reassess the famed centrality of Paris from the vantage point of our globalized twenty-first century by acknowledging its entanglements with South Africa, Turkey, Japan, and the United States. The volume equally studies a broader range of media than Benjamin did himself: from modernist painting and printmaking, photography, and illustration to urban planning. The essays conclude that Paris did in many ways function as the epicenter of modernity's international reach, especially in the years from 1850 to 1900, but did so only as a consequence of the idiosyncratic force of its mythic image. Above all, the essays affirm that the study of late nineteenth-century Paris still requires nimble and innovative approaches commensurate with its legend and global aura.

Ou, le plus souvent, lentement, voire très lentement comme ce visage familier, qu'il faut perdre de vue et retrouver pour prendre conscience de son évolution, employant le passé pour constater le présent : "Comme il a vieilli !" ou "Comme elle a grandi !" Il en est ainsi lorsque c'est l'usage des lieux, de touche en touche, qui fait évoluer les paysages qui nous entourent. L'agriculture, ses contraintes et ses modes ; la voiture, si envahissante, avec ses équipements et ses symboles ; l'obsession de la sécurité, élevant murailles et grilles... La plupart des deux cents photographies de ce livre ont été réalisées par de grands artistes, tels Raymond Depardon, Sophie Ristelhueber ou John Davies. D'autres sont d'anonymes images des siècles derniers qui témoignent, elles aussi, de l'ampleur des changements dans notre cadre de vie.
