Book People with Animals

    Book Details:
  • Author : Lee Broderick
  • Publisher : Oxbow Books
  • Release : 2016-03-01
  • ISBN : 1785702505
  • Pages : 129 pages

Download or read book People with Animals written by Lee Broderick and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2016-03-01 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People with Animals emphasizes the interdependence of people and animals in society, and contributors examine the variety of forms and time-depth that these relations can take. The types of relationship studied include the importance of manure to farming societies, dogs as livestock guardians, seasonality in pastoralist societies, butchery, symbolism and food. Examples are drawn from the Pleistocene to the present day and from the Altai Mountains, Ethiopia, Iraq, Italy, Mongolia and North America. The 11 papers work from the basis that animals are an integral part of society and that past society is the object of most archaeological inquiry. Discussion papers explore this topic and use the case-studies presented in other contributions to suggest the importance of ethnozooarchaeology not just to archaeology but also to anthrozoology. A further contribution to archaeological theory is made by an argument for the validity of ethnozooarchaeology derived models to Neanderthals. The book makes a compelling case for the importance of human-animal relations in the archaeological record and demonstrates why the information contained in this record is of significance to specialists in other disciplines.

Book Presidential Profiles

Download or read book Presidential Profiles written by Philip Secor and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-09 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presidential Profiles is a book that displays bright and colorful verbal pictures of the forty-two men who have led our country from George Washington to George W. Bush. Unlike many works about the presidents, this one is neither a large tome nor a complex study of presidential policies or historical themes arranged by more or less useful analytical categories. Philip Secor, and acclaimed author and historian, has provided here a useful comparative reference for the beginning student and, at the same time, a "good read" for the history buff. Although there are few footnotes and no extensive bibliography, there are a few books suggested for further reading on each president. Each profile seeks to answer four general questions: (1)What kind of person was (is) he in terms of appearance, temperament, personal habits and idiosyncracies? (2) What was his childhood and early life like and what did he do before becoming president? (3) What did he accomplish as president? (4) What did he do after leaving office and what was the manner of his death? Throughout, special emphasis is placed on personal and social relationships.

Book excerpt: This book, with contributions from many of the world's leading polo journalists, profiles more than 30 of the most influential polo players from history. Each chapter covers an individual player, including early pioneers, those who played during the "golden era" (the years between World War I and World War II), superstars, game-changers, and great contemporaries. The book includes numerous photographs and a foreword by H.R.H. The Prince of Wales.

Book Narratives of Mass Atrocity

    Book Details:
  • Author : Sarah Federman
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2022-09-08
  • ISBN : 1009121995
  • Pages : 375 pages

Download or read book Narratives of Mass Atrocity written by Sarah Federman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-09-08 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Individuals can assume—and be assigned—multiple roles throughout a conflict: perpetrators can be victims, and vice versa; heroes can be reassessed as complicit and compromised. However, accepting this more accurate representation of the narrativized identities of violence presents a conundrum for accountability and justice mechanisms premised on clear roles. This book considers these complex, sometimes overlapping roles, as people respond to mass violence in various contexts, from international tribunals to NGO-based social movements. Bringing the literature on perpetration in conversation with the more recent field of victim studies, it suggests a new, more effective, and reflexive approach to engagement in post-conflict contexts. Long-term positive peace requires understanding the narrative dynamics within and between groups, demonstrating that the blurring of victim-perpetrator boundaries, and acknowledging their overlapping roles, is a crucial part of peacebuilding processes. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

Book Beastly Questions

    Book Details:
  • Author : Naomi Sykes
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2014-08-28
  • ISBN : 1472514947
  • Pages : 241 pages

Download or read book Beastly Questions written by Naomi Sykes and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-28 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zooarchaeology, or the study of ancient animals, is a frequently side-lined subject in archaeology. This is bizarre given that the archaeological record is composed largely of debris from human–animal relationships (be they in the form of animal bones, individual artifacts or entire landscapes) and that many disciplines, including anthropology, sociology, and geography, recognise human–animal interactions as a key source of information for understanding cultural ideology. By integrating knowledge from archaeological remains with evidence from texts, iconography, social anthropology and cultural geography, Beastly Questions: Animal Answers to Archaeological Issues seeks to encourage archaeological students, researchers and those working in the commercial sector to offer more engaging interpretations of the evidence at their disposal. Going beyond the simple confines of 'what people ate', this accessible but in-depth study covers a variety of high-profile topics in European archaeology and provides novel interpretations of mainstream archaeological questions. This includes cultural responses to wild animals, the domestication of animals and its implications on human daily practice, experience and ideology, the transportation of species and the value of incorporating animals into landscape research, the importance of the study of foodways for understanding past societies and how animal studies can help us to comprehend issues of human identity and ideology: past, present and future.

Book Contention in Context

Download or read book Contention in Context written by James M. Jasper and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2011-11-16 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite extensive theoretical debates over the utility of "political opportunities" as an explanation for the rise and success of social movements, there have been surprisingly few serious empirical tests. Contention in Context provides the most extensive effort to date to test the model, analyzing a range of important cases of revolutions and protest movements to identify the role of political opportunities in the rise of political contention. With evidence from more than fifty cases, this book explores the role of the state in protest, the frequent overemphasis on political opportunities in recent research, and the extent to which opportunity models ignore the cultural and emotional triggers for collective action. By examining new directions in the study of protest and contention, this book shows that although political opportunities can help explain the emergence of certain kinds of movements, a new strategic language can ultimately tell us far more.

Book Across the Line

Download or read book Across the Line written by Barry Jacobs and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2007-11-01 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1960s, college sports required more than athletic prowess from its African American players. For many pioneering basketball players on 18 teams in the Atlantic and Southeastern conference, playing ball meant braving sometimes menacing crowds during the tumultuous era of civil rights. Perry Wallace feared he would be shot when he first stepped onto a court in his Vanderbilt uniform. During one road game, Georgia's Ronnie Hogue fended off a hostile crowd with a chair. Craig Mobley had to flee the Clemson campus, along with other black students. C.B. Claiborne couldn't attend the Duke team banquet when it was held at an all-white country club. Wendell Hudson's mother cried with heartache when her son decided to play at the University of Alabama, and Al Heartley locked himself in a campus dorm at North Carolina State for safety the night Martin Luther King, Jr., was assassinated. Grounded in the civil rights struggles on campuses throughout the south, the voices of players, coaches, opponents and fans reveal the long-neglected story of race, sports and social history. Barry Jacobs has covered college basketball as well as news and other sports since 1976 for numerous publications, among them the New York Times, Washington Post, GQ, People, Oceans, the Saturday Evening Post and the Sporting News. He is the author of four books, including Coach K's Little Blue Book, The World According to Dean, and Three Paths to Glory. For 14 years he wrote the Fan’s Guide to ACC Basketball. He also served as an elected county commissioner for 20 years and supervises Moorefields, an historic site near Hillsborough, NC.
